Susan Cadogan – Hurt So Good Lyrics | Genius Lyrics https://share.google/fXhmd5KSrhfJUNtnp

I just heard it and looked up the lyrics. Appalling.

OP posts:

We all used to sing "Young Girl" in High School, and imagine it was one of our pop star idols saying it to us.

JohnTheRevelator · 02/03/2026 16:22

Doesn't look any worse than some of the crap that supposedly passes for music these days.

NotDavidTennant · 02/03/2026 16:22

Honestly, there are some MNers who would only approve of songs if the lyrics were:

You treat me right
And respectfully
And if you stopped treating me so well
Then I would leave
Ooh ooh baby

I remember Lily Allen singing It's Not Fair on Saturday Night Takeaway, a family show. Wonder how many kids were singing along to that not knowing what the song was about.

Boomer55 · 02/03/2026 16:33

Music is of its time. Some of today’s drill music sings about “kill the b**h.” 🤷‍♀️

Or anything by Doris Day

But why should it be banned though? Lots of media depicts stuff that isn't good behaviour, that doesn't mean we should ban it. There'd be very little left on TV if we banned all the serial killer dramas for a start!

Agreed. I wonder what kind of literature would remain?

BillieWiper · 02/03/2026 16:42

It's a common theme in songs. Being mistreated in a relationship and still not leaving. Or it could be a euphemism for addiction. Or sado masochism? And it could sung from either sex's perspective.

I think it's supposed to be an anguished love song and there are many on a very similar theme. The pain of being in love with the wrong person etc.

I don't think it should be banned now. What would be the point?

VictoriaEra · 02/03/2026 16:43

What about Mac the Knife?

Female songwriters have been sending bad messages for years. Its not new.

From the 70s / 80s

Respectfully, I say to thee, I'm aware that you're cheating, but no one makes me feel like you do.

Upside Down by Diana Ross, and Hurts So Good were both written by men.

Thanks for making me guffaw, when I'm.supposed to be working 🤣

CoralOP · 02/03/2026 16:54

Or maybe people could stop getting offended at absolutely every single thing...

HortiGal · 02/03/2026 16:56

There’s no mention of violence, brush up your comprehension skills.
So many inappropriate songs out there, this isn’t

Minjou · 02/03/2026 16:57

HelloDenise · 02/03/2026 13:34

It's essentially saying I'll put up with violent abuse as long as I've got a man no matter how much of a twat he is. Susan would never LTB.

And that's true to life for some people. Wtf would it be banned? What for?

"With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you're old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That 'come on' look is in your eyes
Woah, oh, oh
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl"

'Young Girl' by Gary Picket and Union Gap. No 1 in 1968 and in the charts again in 1974.

To be fair, he is saying that he thought she was older and now he knows this to not be the case, telling her to go away from him. That's not a bad message overall.

Motnight · 02/03/2026 16:59

Zov · 02/03/2026 14:01

EXACTLY @VimesandhisCardboardBoots ! Well said.

Agree! We can't start banning music, books, TV simply because we don't like the themes.

Cobwebsofwisdom · 02/03/2026 17:01

I dont want want banned , but 'Stand by your man' sends a msg I don't like.

And don't listen to anything by early Eminem for God's sake, OP.

I used to love this song SO much. I was upset when eventually I realised what it was about!

Charitygirl1 · 02/03/2026 17:02

Thanks for the reminder - what a banger this one is!

SchoolReading · 02/03/2026 17:03

We have used song lyrics as conversations to have with our sons. Old school; Kylie sang, Better the Devil you know "You say you love me, oh boy, I can't ask for more" (yes you can love is not enough) and "I'll forgive and forget if you say you'll never go" FFS.

Plus Issues by Julia Michaels, "you do shit on purpose, you get mad and you break things" and "Cause we got the kind of love it takes to solve them" no breaking things is not acceptable.

This has been great in a way, the same with books Twilight (obsession, control) TV shows (Ross in Friends, any of Rory's boyfriends in Gilmore Girls) I think topics should be discussed. They know my Aunty left her husband after he broke her jaw and it was wired shut because we talk about relationships, attitudes of men toward women and what a positive relationship is. Banning stuff because we don't like it is wrong, we should debate it.

Exactly! She misleads him about her age, and he sends her packing when he finds out.

No idea why this song always gets dug up and wheeled out on threads like this.

Makeso · 02/03/2026 17:07

if you find it distasteful, avoid it on Spotify and turn off the tv if it comes on. It shouldn’t be banned, and I’m sick of that being the default for people that don’t like certain books, music, films to want to mass ban it

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/03/2026 17:07

This will either make you faint or slide right off your seat.....

How can I put this in a way so as not to offend or unnerve?
But there's a rumor goin' all round that you ain't been gettin' served
They say that you ain't you know what in baby who knows how long
It's hard for me to say what's right when all I wanna do is wrong

Gett off, 23 positions in a one night stand
Gett off, I'll only call you after if you say I can
Gett off, let a woman be a woman and a man be a man
Gett off, if you want to, baby here I am, here I am

I clocked the jizz from a friend of your's named Vanessa Bet, Bet
She said you told her a fantasy that got her all wet, wet
Something about a little box with a mirror and a tongue inside
What she told me then got me so hot I knew that we could slide

Gett off, 23 positions in a one night stand
Gett off, I'll only call you after if you say I can
Gett off, let a woman be a woman and a man be a man
Gett off, if you want to, baby here I am, here I am

Gett off
Gett off

1, 2, 3, nah, little cutie, I ain't drinkin', gett off
Scope this, I was just thinkin', you plus me, what a ride
If you was thinkin' the same, we could continue outside, gett off
Lay your pretty body against a parkin' meter, strip your dress down
Like I was strippin' a Peter Paul's, Almond Joy
Lemme show you baby, I'm a talented boy

Everybody grab a body
Pump it like you want somebody
Gett off, gett off

So here we, so here we, so here we are
Here we are in my paisley crib
"Whatcha want to eat?"
"Ribs"
"Ha, toy, I don't serve ribs
You better be happy that dress is still on
I heard the rip when you sat down"

Honey, them hips is gone
That's alright, I clock 'em that way
Remind me of something James used to say
"I like 'em fat", "I like 'em proud"
"Ya gotta have a mother for me"
Now move your big ass 'round this way
So I can work on that zipper, baby
Tonight your a star and I'm the big dipper

Na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na
Kick it
Gett off
Gett, gett off

How can I put this in a way so as not to offend or unnerve, gett off
There's a rumor goin' all round that you ain't been gettin' served, gett off
They say that you ain't you know what in, baby
Who knows how long, gett off
It's hard for me to say what's right when all I wanna do is wrong

Gett off, 23 positions in a one night stand
Gett off, I'll only call you after if you say I can
Gett off, let a woman be a woman and a man be a man
Gett off, if you want to, baby, here I am, here I am

RaraRachael · 02/03/2026 17:09

It was the 70s. Nobody bothered about song lyrics back then.
You can't compare 70s stuff to current days. Everything was very different.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 02/03/2026 17:11

That's s great song @Eyesopenwideawake , love Prince.

Not sure why you think it's shocking though... unless all mentions or implications of sex should be banned?
