Would you be happy with this cake for £50 from a 'professional' cake maker?

Just as in the title really.

£50. Cake was raw in the middle but was still warm as had obviously been made very quickly before I collected it . I was due to collect it at 11am but at 10am she had sent me a message about a 'family emergency' and asked if I could collect in the evening instead (which was not possible). Instead we agreed for 2.30pm.

The butter icing was melting as the cake was still warm so had almost collapsed in the middl and it just looked so amateur. I could genuinely have made it myself if I wanted it to look that bad, but paid a professional so it looked better than I could do.

I have been offered a refund, BUT the cake maker has made out I am totally unreasonable... so what do you think?! Would you be happy?

Is there meant to be a creepy face and skinny arms at the bottom?

Yes, the Lord fashioned me according to his will.

SouthernNights59 · 07/02/2026 20:21

Several of the women I used to work with produced better looking cakes than that to bring to morning tea! No way should you made to be feel bad about a refund.

It’s a basic sponge cake with what looks like a simple butter cream - there’s no way the ingredients came to £50. Different if there had been complex decoration or flavouring - it’s a tarted up Victoria sponge.

I don't make cakes that often but even I know you can't put icing on a warm cake!
The top half looks like its about to slide off.
Also. Sponge. Butter Icing and a couple of strawberries It just looks like a very simple homemade scruffy cake. Not a professional £50 job.

and then being accused of warming the cake in the car ( calling OP a liar in other words) really is the icing on the cake.

I think you all ate the cake clearly and it looked nice (if not your version of £50 nice) so you should at least pay the baker for the ingredients and a contribution to time. She could refund you 25% as a goodwill gesture.

You happened not to like the look of the final result and the icing might have melted a bit but an 100% refund is taking the piss, this is a small business. She’s not a big shop chain. You’re not being very reasonable about just one part of what I am sure was a lovely party.

Gosh I would go for compensation for the fuck up for my party as well as refund

come on

Ilikesundays · 07/02/2026 20:26

Did you accept the cake? How did it taste?

Hhhwgroadk · 07/02/2026 20:27

What the hell is this all about a cake? A sponge takes very little time to make. If it is for a children's party does it matter? In my opinion it would take me less time to make it and decorate than to order on line, drive through traffic, find a parking space, pay for it, drive home and put it on the table. Who cares, you can do your own presentation at home in less than an hour! I have made a "Dougal Cake" in less time. Plus it would taste better, have more love, and not full of unnatural chemicals.

Cordon bleu is a different ball game.

I think reading the comments above, I’m too naive, but I would have assumed the family emergency was genuine, felt sorry for her, and been grateful she got a cake to me at all. And I like cake mixture so the fact it wasn’t quite cooked right in the centre wouldn’t have been a problem.

what if she really did have a family emergency, but didn’t want to let you down, so tried her absolute best in the time she had available?

If this was the case then she should have been honest with OP. Any professional would not have put out a cake or been honest and offered to make brownies/cupcakes or something that would cool quicker and allow them to be iced and look nice. The baker messed up by forgetting your cake, take your refund and lesson learned for her.

zanahoria · 07/02/2026 20:29

You had me at 'raw'

of course you should be refunded

Clefable · 07/02/2026 20:30

I pay £60 for a similar size cake from our cake lady and her cakes are immaculate, beautifully presented and actually baked! I’m surprised the maker is arguing with you, unless this is representative of her work generally. Surely she would be a bit embarrassed about it!

Notashamed13 · 07/02/2026 20:30

Not rtft but the pictures clearly show 2 different cakes?

purplecorkheart · 07/02/2026 20:32

Why are there two different cakes? They both look awful and they should be refunded. Is this a reverse and you are the cake maker posting pictures that were sent to you as complaints?

If you would pay £60 for a cake like this then I will provide you with my address! I could make several cakes like this under 2 hours! I'm a home cook.

Clefable · 07/02/2026 20:33

They aren’t different cakes, the last pic is what it looks like with the strawberries removed. You can see them in the bowl in background.

rememberingthem · 07/02/2026 20:33

Nope! Its awful

Eh? I said the cake I pay £60 for is beautiful and properly baked. It’s not like OP’s at all. It was to show that her higher expectations for the price were not unreasonable.

What about the icing at the bottom of one cake but not the other?

Anywherebuthere · 07/02/2026 20:36

I'm not a professional and I make better cakes than that. That looks awful.

A refund is the only way to go.

Clefable · 07/02/2026 20:36

It looks like it’s just the top layer in the last one, the bottom one has been taken off (the one with the legs).

Minjou · 07/02/2026 20:38

Professionals cost more than 50quid. You get what you pay for

Ahhh possibly! Either way its a shit show for 50 quid!

auserna · 07/02/2026 20:40

Why does it have two tiny penises at the bottom?

Were you actually replying to the post you quoted? Because your response bears little relation to it!

And I get it now! I thought it was overcooked cake dribble (they are legs 🤣🤣) and the chocolate sauce type stuff I can now see is an attempt at a smiley face.....oh dear OP i dont know who to feel more sorry for..... the person who thought it was good enough to charge 50 quid (emergency or not) or your birthday person!
