Would you be happy with this cake for £50 from a 'professional' cake maker?

Just as in the title really.

£50. Cake was raw in the middle but was still warm as had obviously been made very quickly before I collected it . I was due to collect it at 11am but at 10am she had sent me a message about a 'family emergency' and asked if I could collect in the evening instead (which was not possible). Instead we agreed for 2.30pm.

The butter icing was melting as the cake was still warm so had almost collapsed in the middl and it just looked so amateur. I could genuinely have made it myself if I wanted it to look that bad, but paid a professional so it looked better than I could do.

I have been offered a refund, BUT the cake maker has made out I am totally unreasonable... so what do you think?! Would you be happy?

No, it looks disgusting. Why are there little legs on it, is that what you ordered?!

It’s a jellycat…. They have legs

gototogo · 07/02/2026 22:50

The ingredients plus electric would be about £10, it’s not a big cake and I’m presuming she’s used real butter, if it’s baking spread knock a pound off. It’s definitely not worth close to £50 unless for better in presentation.

Superhansrantowindsor · 07/02/2026 22:54

£50 is cheap for a professional cake. This is not up to professional standard. It is also not worth £50. I would want a refund. I could do tha cake myself.

Alpacajigsaw · 07/02/2026 22:59

what if she really did have a family emergency, but didn’t want to let you down, so tried her absolute best in the time she had available?

shit happens but that’s not a plausible explanation an hour before the cake was due to be ready. So she’s full of shit. If it had been genuine, I’d expect most people would understand, but also not to have to pay for it

omg that isn’t OPs problem - the women is running a business, she’s not a friend doing a favour ffs

MrsArcher23 · 07/02/2026 23:10

It doesn’t have a professional finish but you got your refund. What else should she do? You should have cancelled the order completely when she said she couldn’t have it ready until evening.

Blanketpolicy · 07/02/2026 23:19

Take the refund. Once you have the refund leave a factual review of the cake and the transaction/refund. Don’t use her again.

Alwaysontherun · 07/02/2026 23:40

I used to have my own cake business and £50 is cheap for a professional cake but this is not a professional cake. Aside from being very poorly executed and obviously rushed the cake is raw in the middle so do not feel bad about asking for a refund.

Anonanonay · 08/02/2026 00:28

Fifty quid for that is insane.

TimeForATerf · 08/02/2026 05:44

I would be embarrassed to make a cake like that other than for after tea on a school night for the kids. Absolutely accept the refund.

She knows.

Imuptoolate · 07/02/2026 20:01

It looks awful and I would accept the refund. However, as others have said, £50 for a professionally made cake is nothing, so I wouldn’t have even ordered from her in the first place as I would question how professional/skilled she is if she is charging such low prices.

I agree with this. I suppose it depends on area but £50 would be suspiciously low where I live.

footballcrazyfootballmad · 07/02/2026 18:26

Yes exactly!!

She said she does not like being 'accused' and said I must have warmed it up in my car 🤣

And magically made it under baked?? It's amateur, she's rushed it, she should admit it and move on

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 07/02/2026 20:58

Was it meant to look like this?

Edited

Aww now that's cute! I couldn't cut it!!

PeoniesAreMyFavouriteFlowers · 08/02/2026 06:11

Take the refund.

Initially I thought they were cocktail sausages stuck out of the bottom. 😄

Sartre · 08/02/2026 08:20

Ha, don’t feel bad about taking the refund and leave a bad review. She clearly forgot about you entirely and panicked. It looks bad but more importantly was raw so inedible.

Owly11 · 08/02/2026 08:38

Obviously it's harder to tell from the pictures but to me that doesn't look raw - maybe a bit dense/soggy right in the middle. She should have offered a partial refund or an option to cancel when she was unable to get it to you at the correct time and she shouldn't have agreed to 2.30pm if she didn't have time to get it ready for then. I think half price would have been fair - for ingredients and time. But that's because the cake looks edible to me from the photos. I do think wanting a full refund AND the cake is unreasonable.

Misshollys · 08/02/2026 09:34

What size is it? Price should depend on that too. It looks small enough.
If it was warm inside then that's why it was soggy and the buttercream melted.
Definitely does not look like the work of a professional and charging £50 is crazy. It feels like it was doomed from when the time to collect was changed. Take that refund and don't feel bad about it.

Poppy61 · 08/02/2026 09:38

Think the 'you warmed it up in your car' comment speaks volumes. Its not baked properly in the middle. Stick to your guns.

LoyalMember · 08/02/2026 14:32

arethereanyleftatall · 07/02/2026 18:29

I think reading the comments above, I’m too naive, but I would have assumed the family emergency was genuine, felt sorry for her, and been grateful she got a cake to me at all. And I like cake mixture so the fact it wasn’t quite cooked right in the centre wouldn’t have been a problem.

Ffs, you believe your kids when they tell you the dog ate their homework, don't you?
😆

RachyRoo24 · 08/02/2026 17:52

Oh no. I'd give her £2 because I felt sorry for her but I wouldn't pay a fiver for it let alone £50. I can do better than a lot of pros myself and this one isn't good.

ThisMellowCat · 08/02/2026 17:55

That is terrible and as for her a professional cake maker, she would not have let that see the light of day. Did you see other cakes she had made prior to ordering?

truffleruffle · 08/02/2026 17:56

I would have been so disappointed in this cake. You can see its raw in the middle. Definitely wouldn’t have expected this from a professional.

Blueuggboots · 08/02/2026 17:58

I’m NOT a professional baker and I wouldn’t present that!

MintDog · 08/02/2026 18:05

footballcrazyfootballmad · 07/02/2026 18:29

Ah wow, that's alot for a cake. £50 is normal here for a professionally done cake. Our other daughter's 18th birthday cake was incredible for £50.

Paid £125 for my daughter's age 2 cake 10 years ago. Where on earth is £50 normal for a professional cake!

You're talking £200 easily for a decent cake.
