I remember reading a dystopian novel, years ago in book club about constant rain and a malignant government taken over by an equally malignant USA. It was the stuff of nightmares.

I can't remember the name of the author, except female, or the name of the book. It was bleak.

DuncinToffee · 07/02/2026 14:24

I am watching the curling, the commentator keeps mixing up the US with Canada Grin

Excellent news!

Whoop whoop.

Great news 🥳

LlynTegid · 07/02/2026 15:49

The USA cricket team have done better than expected so far in their T20 match against India. Possibly the USA could win, and if so I expect Donald Trump to take credit for it.

It is awful, isn't it @BestIsWest ?

Something to cheer you up. The rank stupidity of a pro-arsonist:

Please remember you can't call them stupid.

How earth has this woman been left behind Braverman and Jenrick in the growing coalition of the ghastly ? Surely she is reform deputy PM in waiting ?

Fuck farmers. These are the people who had almost field-to-field "Vote Leave" advertising trucks in their fields (all in accordance with planning and tax regulations though. None of this insouciant attitude to the law you might have expected).

Well. We voted Leave. They got what they wanted. Now they get to STFU.

It's hard to avoid the conclusion that had the US adopted cricket, the world would be a much quieter place.

Did the skating or the football get the big screen?

because it needs to be the skating.

SerendipityJane · 07/02/2026 16:21

Out of nowhere (well, not quite) Shakespeares (?) speech from "Sir Thomas More" has started trending (There is already a thread about it).

Here's a breakdown with the absolutely mesmerizing performance from Sir Ian McKellan.

It's too close to 2026 for comfort. But listen how it acts as a "Back atcha" to the mob.

Going against the grain, (not sorry), I knew two farmers who wanted to remain. Your sentiments are my thoughts entirely.

Definitely 💯

I'm here for this second mundane thriller today.

Well done@pointythings DD 🚘
I don't envy anyone taking their driving test on the roads today!

I'm so so dim as to thing every single farmer was stupid enough to support leave. Obviously some had enough smarts to know it would be a disaster. However I'm willing to believe they probably felt discretion was the better part of valour as they found them surrounded by the mob.

It's hard to have much respect for any constituency that decided the Tories were the best placed party to actually make Brexit even remotely non shit.

You know I said we can't call them stupid ?

Great news @pointythings! Well done your DD.

Made it back home. Only took 5 hours Hmm

Lots of rain to start with, although it cleared up as we got nearer to London and as @LlynTegid said, far fewer lorries. And then we hit the M25. Going from the M4 junction to junction 10 took us 90 minutes. FFS. Anyway, almost time to open the bar.

PickAChew · 07/02/2026 17:09

Well done to your DD, @pointythings 🎉

I wish she'd write a letter for some dry breezy weather to dry out the waterlogged fields.

Skating, a disappointing result for Team NL but a very impressive gold for Italy.

Switched over in time to see a football win
