What Government experience did Starmer have before he was elected leader?

He was DPP for a few years

BIWI · 07/02/2026 09:23

LlynTegid · 07/02/2026 08:56

I bet the middle lane hoggers made it worse.

Too true. Plus the lorries that wouldn’t slow down

To be fair, that exprience hasn't really helped him in his role as PM.

I think Carns could be a good call, personally. He doesn't have the baggage that Rayner et al have. His main problem is being Scottish. Some elements of the press won't like that in the same way they resented Brown for it.

I have been on the M4 in rain like that and the lorries are bloody terrifying.

BIWI · 07/02/2026 09:54

… and we’re driving home today in what looks like it will be the same!

SerendipityJane · 07/02/2026 09:55

One view of all this is that by not having this inquiry, Starmer is also signalling he;s up to his neck in it

It’s all very barefoot in the kitchen - but if you won’t or can’t perform your duty you pay more tax.

“In a list of proposals designed to reinforce family values in Britain, he suggested: “Creating a pro-family culture by having a national day to celebrate families and parenthood. Symbolising this new culture through things like families receiving a telegram from the King when they have a third child.
“Entrenching the importance of the family in the curriculum. Switching child benefit to incentivise families to have more children. Introducing a ‘negative child benefit’ tax for those who don’t have offspring.”

Reform by-election candidate suggested people who don’t have kids should pay more tax

Exclusive: The Reform politician’s suggestion would ‘punish millions of women and strip them of their basic dignity to choose’, Labour’s deputy leader has warned

Carns would be an incredibly good call one day. Former senior military officer - his rise to brigadier was meteoric - young, intelligent, great communicator. He’s not ready though, he needs more government experience. Maybe the one after next.

Yes, I’ve noticed he’s getting quite a lot of press attention at the moment.

If you wanted more kids, don't pay child benefit until the 4th kid ...

Yep. It's teeming it down! Apparently we had the wettest January for 50 years. February is shaping up to be the same.

Forecast to be reasonably ok in London

I'd stay there Cardibach. I am beyond sick of the rain here

pointythings · 07/02/2026 10:11

Reform needs to make its mind up. If they want loads more children, they need to support removing the two child cap and they need to make childcare affordable.

This man's ideas sound like a 6th form thought experiment, and not a very good one.

It's dry and quiet here, DD has her theory test today so keep everything crossed!

BIossomtoes · 07/02/2026 10:25

Hope your DD passes, Pointy. It’s not raining here for the first time in what feels like years. I might actually get the dogs out today. Jack Russells detest rain and they sneer at me if I even attempt to take them out in it.

DuncinToffee · 07/02/2026 10:27

Still raining here.

The speed skating clashes with football today, the question now is who is having the tv screen and who the laptop?

Good luck to DD @pointythings

Hope all goes well with your DD @pointythings

That's a tricky decision @DuncinToffee

Skating is awful to watch on the laptop.

Fewer lorries on the road on a Saturday though.

LlttledrummergirI · 07/02/2026 10:42

Thanks for the new thread.
It's nice to have some sanity on here, as there is some crazy talk elsewhere.

Skating is only once every four years.

True dat!

Isn't this at odds with opposing the lifting of the 2 child benefit cap or is this another case of only for the right families?

pointythings · 07/02/2026 11:01

Exactly. And I'm single so I get total control.
DD and I did enjoy watching the Big Air qualifyers last night, I think we'll be watching quite a bit of the flamboyant stuff together.

Whenever I hear any reform policies (such as they are) I make sure that I remember anything "nice" is for the whites and anything "nasty" is for the non-whites.

Because even if that isn't what they say, it's what their supporters want to hear.

Admittedly, it's a lot more complex than that. I mean where is a white woman ? More than a non white woman, but clearly nowhere near as good as a man. But what if that man is non-white ?

All I can said is thank god we have "AI" to steer us through the complex interplay of privileges that reformistas want to divvy up so they are in the light all the time and every other fucker gets the shade.

God, there is. I think the deluge of rain is rotting some people's brains.
