My favourite question of anyone on a this is a Christian country rant is "when did you last attend church other than for a wedding, christening or funeral". Guaranteed to change the subject.

But that's meaningless.

It's telling that having ceded political control to the secular, Christianity has gone woke. Even the Catholics. And they used to think they were Christianity.

It's grimly amusing (if you have a passing knowledge of medieval life) to speculate on what exactly would have happened to Yaxley-Lennon if he tried calling himself an Xtian in the 1500s by saying that "it's not important to actually know anything".

Global Counsel, the advisory firm founded by Mandelson, is set to go into administration as soon as Friday in the wake of revelations about the former peer and Jeffrey Epstein

But that's meaningless

Ecclesiastes would agree with you.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. 🤣

PickAChew · 19/02/2026 13:57

A true Christian would know that the ten commandments are so BC.

Can you be ChiRho and not accept the guff that is the old testament ?

How can anyone reconcile these two tomes and be accepted as anything but barking mad ?

I have heard friends of faith talk about Woolworth Christians, as they only remember the Pick'n'Mix.

placemats · 19/02/2026 14:44

Barking mad applies to all religions.

All religious festivals are taken from ancient festivals.

Raven08 · 19/02/2026 14:56

The nonce formerly known as Prince will get a rap on the knuckles and a fine, which UK taxpayers KC will pay.
The idea he will be remanded in custody or pay for his crimes in any meaningful way is laughable.
RIP Virginnia.

I’m going to choose to remain hopeful that the intention is a proper consequence due to the surprise public nature of the arrest and the King’s statement. That said, I won’t be totally gobsmacked if nothing much comes of it.

but no less hatstand for it.

I love fiction - fairy stories, legends, myths, folklore. All any anything which crystallises what it is to be human and possess the ability to be aware of the marvel that is our universe. Whatever that means.

.Ask the Green Man where he comes from,
ask the cup that fills with red.
Ask the old grey standing stones who show the sun his way to bed.
Question all as to their ways, and learn the secrets that they hold.
Walk the lines of Nature's palm, crossed with silver and with gold.

In another thread, there is a non debate about what it is to be thick. And whilst there are several possible definitions, you will never impress me if you tell me you went a day and did not learn at least one thing you did not knew when you woke up.

(Wasn't there once a thread on MN "What have you learned today ?". Or did I just make that up ?)

I wonder. There will be a lot of outrage if he slithers off the hook. Now that the police have access to his emails etc, you never know what might emerge.

It is a great shame Virginia Giuffre didn't get to see this day. I know he has only been arrested for misconduct, but it might have been some solace for her.

Luckily, he's unlikely to face a jury trial, now it's banned by MN.

Well, if you start from the batshit crazy premise that white males are structurally discriminated against, you have your tasty circular argument all ready made for you.

Well @SerendipityJane the meaning of our next thread title and the fact that it is in a song, joins the list of the many new things which I have learned today

I knoooooow!

The reference is to a song that parodies the kind of evangelical gospel singing you get in certain branches of Christianity.

Today I have finally learned what having the hammer means in curling, and what Ski Mountaineering is.

I should have added that the one fact a day needn't be useful.

BIWI · 19/02/2026 15:59

Here's today's new fact:

Before he famously climbed Mount Everest, Edmund Hillary was a professional beekeeper.

The ski mountaineering is good fun tbh.

Somewhere a pub quiz setter is sharpening their pencil ...

BIWI · 19/02/2026 16:31

Funnily enough, we're off to a pub quiz this evening!
