I think Trump might be about to have his first real political ideology test on the world stage.

Japan PM Takaichi held a snap election, and has won a super majority, enough to change their constitution.

The Party in charge of the PRC do not like her at all. Since she basically said Japan would get involved if the PRC invades Taiwan, the PRC state media campaign against her has been relentless. Magna comics banned in China, anything Japan to be "disliked", and last week all flights between the 2 cancelled. on the PRC side.

Given that PM Takaichi is right wing, a Thatcherite no less, what side will Trump come down on ? Especially if Japanese re-armament is on the cards, which is exactly what Takaichi wants to do.

And if Takaichi does as expected, and starts to talk about removing the pacifist part of the Japanese constitution, will Trump back his fellow right winger ? Or will he back communist/socialist Uncle Xi ? Because Xi does throw such a nice State visit after all.

I don't think Trump will be able to avoid this one.

Which way will Miller Trump jump?

I have no skin in the game in the Japan and China dispute but China will never forget the Nanjing Massacre. Takaichi is keen for closer US ties. She is either brave or naive in trusting the US in this political climate.

It's also complicated because a big part of Trump's grievance towards other countries is that they won't support themselves defense wise/that they leach on America for their security. So Japan saying "OK we will rearm" should be something he would welcome. But obviously as you said it's actually a huge deal for lots of reasons.

Yup, it's complex.

He will like the orders for arms from Japan, but at the same time, he does like the parades Xi puts on for him :-)

The USA can't accuse Japan of leaching off them on defense. It was the US who wrote their pacifist constitution, and enforced it. If Trump says that to Japan he might have a problem.

They CAN. It would just be hugely unreasonable. But I don't think that's a big problem TBH.

Ha ha yup. Trump also seems to not know the USA does not have an official language.

And before anyone argues, I am pretty sure Trumps executive order from March of last year counts :-)

Designating English as the Official Language of The United States – The White House

And of course there is the Republican line that they all love so much. " No taxation without representation". They love that line, until Puerto Rico is mentioned :-)

I have watched the half time show and I loved it. I love salsa, Lady Gaga, latin american vibes, Ricky and everything about it. It was just joyful.

Trump is an arse and can FO.

Yeah, spot on.

Lots of big headlines and yakking about... everyone in the Epstein files except the current US administration. Not just Trump, but Steve Bannon.

So Trump obviously hates opera and foreign language films.

PerkingFaintly · 09/02/2026 10:56

And the UK version of that is, why is no one demanding answers from Farage about his closeness with Bannon, who's been one of Farage's advisors for years?

Make hay while the snow falls, eh ?

The PRC leadership is loving Trump just now. As I have said before, Trump could not be doing more for the CPC if he was a full card carrying member.

State Media today:

Controversy sparked over some US athletes’ remarks on representing US at Winter Olympics amid ICE tensions; issue reflects domestic rifts spilling over to international stage: Chinese expert - Global Times

Quotes from the link:

"The athletes' remarks reflect not provocation, but a sense of unease driven by growing social disorder linked to immigration enforcement, Lü Xiang, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times. He noted that athletes, though not directly involved in immigration policy, chose to speak out despite the risks of criticism, suggesting that the impact of ICE operations has created widespread anxiety affecting both individuals and their communities."

"While, at the same time, other reports said applause could also be heard, and some US broadcasters appeared to downplay or omit the boos in their coverage, highlighting differing interpretations of the crowd's reaction."

Yup. Actual state media propaganda of an authoritarian state can report the actual truth, and it makes the bastion of freedom look really bad.

Re the boos in the stadium. All the sound engineers need to do is change what microphones are used on their sound decks.

Someone called Hess calling out Trump on fascism

What did these absolute frothing morons think was going to happen?

Not that we, here, can pat ourselves on the backs, since the UK lost our measles eliminations status in Jan.

There should be a Charlie Kirk joke in there.

I had a look for the show. TPUSA is not blocked where I am, but clicking the link goes to YouTube, and that is blocked So I suppose we can assume that MAGA heaven has the same management as the country I am in ?

Makes sense really. After all, was Jesus not the first communist ?

:-)

Or maybe the MAGA angels don't have money to make donations with ?

Is that the House Oversight Committee? Where Ghislaine Maxwell will appear — from prison — for a virtual deposition?

I don't think I have ever heard of a POTUS insulting Olympic athletes days after the games started.

And yes, I mean plural, because although it's just one at the moment.... give it time.

Hunter Hess: Trump insults Olympic skier who expressed ‘mixed emotions’ representing the US | CNN Politics

U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday morning. “If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this.”

Thinking about it. When Reagan was in the big chair, what he wanted most from these sporting events was defections, as well as medals of course. But defections were a big win. See how superior the USA is.

Wow, how things have changed.

Trump insults Olympic skier who expressed ‘mixed emotions’ representing the US | CNN Politics

President Donald Trump called Olympic skier Hunter Hess a “loser” on Sunday after the athlete expressed “mixed emotions representing the US right now” in the Winter Olympic Games.
