So, what you are really saying is - new joiners should ‘know their place’, and not dare to venture an opinion which is incompatible with yours.

Sorry to tell you, but life doesn’t work like that - in most places, anyway.

No. That is not what I am saying at all. Don't be silly.

People who have chosen until now to "discover" their supposed ire can only be assumed to have accepted everything that came before.

No!

Notonthestairs · 06/02/2026 11:46

I think a lot of MN decided politics started in July 2024.

Indeed.

No its not about knowing your place.

It is about being deliberately misleading.

Which you are.

I have been utterly consistent in my criticism of this Labour government.

Replying to your original post and not the edited version.

BIossomtoes · 06/02/2026 11:48

Absolutely. Or if it’s acknowledged they revise it.

We don't post on the LiW thread.

And all of us have been here since at least 2016 - we haven't popped up since July 2024 because our guys didn't win.

Notonthestairs · 06/02/2026 11:54

You've created a new username and your posting history of the last 48 hours isnt nearly as consistent as you think it is.

For a supposed Rayner fan you've been very, shall we say...backward in coming forward in your support elsewhere.

It is very weird for Nobby to say you edited a post when we can all see you didn't?

Sharing the latest FT piece.

Sir Keir Starmer and his senior ministers and advisers are preparing to hand over WhatsApp messages, texts and email exchanges with Lord Peter Mandelson relating to his appointment as UK ambassador to Washington, in a data dump expected to deepen the prime minister’s woes. The cross-party intelligence and security committee has written to Starmer saying it expects relevant information to be handed over to parliament “very shortly”, creating a “Mandelson files” cache of potentially embarrassing documents.

Starmer believes that some of the exchanges relating to Mandelson’s vetting for the US job will support his claim that the former ambassador “lied” about his relationship with child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. But other messages sent between Mandelson and Starmer’s team could be much more problematic. Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s under-fire chief of staff, supported Mandelson for the job and was in close communication with him during his time in Washington last year.

Notonthestairs · 06/02/2026 11:57

I can never be bothered to edit posts.
SO yes, that seems off.

As do a lot of things.

I don’t accept that people only get to speak if they object at the right moment in history, or that their concerns are invalid because you think it should have happened ten years ago.

People engage when policies start to affect them directly or when they feel ignored. That is not hypocrisy, it’s how people, who want their voices heard engage.

Shouting “where were these f……rs then” doesn’t strengthen the debate, it just shuts conversation down. I’d much rather see people engaged late than disengaged forever.

And many of us were paying attention back then, were commenting back then and strongly believe that silence, right now, is not the answer and are taking to MN to express our feelings.

I repeat, I think that is a good thing!

People can always object when they want to and I can agree some people become involved in politics at a point where they become too appalled to stay out of it, or it impacts them badly.
I only have anecdotal evidence for this too - I became so appalled at the racist and far right that I joined Stand Up To Racism and do various activities with them. Others recently joined feel the same, or joined earlier for similar reasons, some have always been activists. Some folk decide not to campaign as directly but may volunteer for such as food banks, refugee charities to help the issue that upsets them. There are also similar options for those on different points of the political spectrum.

However, I cannot agree this takes the form of signing upto discussion sites such as here, Reddit, digital spy (probably showing my age!) to join in debate on the opposite side of long running threads you wouldn’t agree with - it’s not an effective objecting tool. Activist groups would recommend many other things to do to get your view out there - social media like Insta, fb, X etc if you can’t join anything in person.
You may not be aware but people are on their longer running preferred threads like this to feel they’re not alone, to discuss matters of joint interest - not to campaign and try to change another poster’s viewpoint. There are individual threads to argue on that come up regularly though.
Anyway, as you’re keen to make folk know how bad labour is there’s a long running thread for that too where you can find your tribe.

Suggestion for new title. Starmer: Sea lions make for uncomfortable bedfellows. Wet, smelly and unwanted.
