Another person murdered by ICE

I’m in tears and shock at the brutality happening in broad daylight in the US. I’m a US citizen, emigrated to the UK for family reasons 12 years ago (now dual citizen), and I am just in disbelief at what’s happening. I was sick when I learned of Trump’s first election and gravely disappointed by the second one. But the sheer brutality of what’s happening in MN right now has really thrown me. I have friends and family there, in Chicago (where ICE raids were occurring in the autumn), in NY, and in California. I’m hearing that even worse things are happening in the Deep South but fewer observers and press to report on it. Posting here because I feel so lost.

Um it does seem that “whataboutery “ is a useful phrase to pull out when people can’t justify the hypocrisy.
One person gets shot and killed in America people lose their shit.
Many tens of thousands are shot and killed in Iran very little said.
Whats that other useful phrase “people can be concerned by more than one thing at once.”

It's simple. Until recently, we thought America was a democracy which had rule of law. Iran, Afghanistan and Syria did not have those things - hence the far lower expectations.

We are more shocked at what is happening in the US because we held them in higher esteem than they merited. If you see a monster, you expect it to bite without provocation. If you see a person who on the face of it looks like a regular human being, you don't expect it to bite. The story of the scorpion and the frog illustrates it nicely - it has just taken us some time to realise the US is just another scorpion.

Kristi Noem due to hold a press conference later - no doubt she'll claim he marched towards the officers brandishing a gun even though the video shows him holding his phone.

CelticSilver · 24/01/2026 19:31

I'm sure if your friends and family don't wave a gun around and threaten to kill the ICE agents, they'll be fine.

Easy to see how the Nazis were able to rise to power.

Frugalgal · 24/01/2026 21:40

An intensive care nurse and all round good guy.

They're going to struggle to paint this one as a bad guy like they did the last one.

DuncinToffee · 24/01/2026 21:41

'The Minnesota man who was killed by federal agents on Saturday has been identified as Alex Pretti, 37, a registered nurse working in the intensive care unit at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, which serves veterans.'

They have already planted the ‘he was carrying a gun’ bullshit explanation. He was clearly carrying a mobile phone in the videos

I do see your point, I really do.
I’m just so mad at the injustice of the people murdered in Iran, and no worldwide condemnation,
Its becoming clear it’s more about who is doing the killing and whether you like them or not.

I haven't heard about a second one but the first woman wasn't murdered.

Of course she was. She was short three times

StuffyHuffyPuffy · 24/01/2026 21:43

So, is anyone keeping an official list of stuff that needs to be;

  1. undone/erased
  2. dragged through the legal system

once Trump is out?

They are, but every time it does give the opportunity to reply with the actual, horrifying, facts.

Mericanilondon · 24/01/2026 21:45

@StuffyHuffyPuffy Historian Heather Cox Richardson has been writing excellent near-daily summaries of US events for several years. They will be an excellent and invaluable record of all that’s happened.

Well he didn't neither and they still piled on top of him, smashed his head, punched him and then shot him several times.

hattie43 · 24/01/2026 20:42

There was no need for this today. There was about 4 or 5 ICE agents on top of him . He was not a threat .

He was brandishing a 9mm semiautomatic pistol as he approached them, and refused to put it down. That sounds pretty threatening to me.

Many thanks to the bat shit American posters on this thread, I've never felt so proud ( or relieved) to be British. My sincere sympathies go to the sane American posters. I hope your country regains some sanity at some point soon.

Yuasa · 24/01/2026 21:53

Genuine questions for those supporting ICE:

Is there anything an ICE agent could do that you’d consider unacceptable or too far?

Is there any treatment you consider excessive for someone who has overstayed or not got the correct papers? Being ‘illegal’ seems to be trotted out as a justification for anything.

Do you have no empathy for people who feel so concerned about ICE’s actions that they feel morally compelled attempt to intervene? Surely even if you don’t agree, it’s obvious that the level of brutality being meted out to protesters is excessive?

Every news outlet I checked is reporting the 9mm pistol. Time will tell what the facts are, but it’s unlikely they all just made it up.
