I’m in tears and shock at the brutality happening in broad daylight in the US. I’m a US citizen, emigrated to the UK for family reasons 12 years ago (now dual citizen), and I am just in disbelief at what’s happening. I was sick when I learned of Trump’s first election and gravely disappointed by the second one. But the sheer brutality of what’s happening in MN right now has really thrown me. I have friends and family there, in Chicago (where ICE raids were occurring in the autumn), in NY, and in California. I’m hearing that even worse things are happening in the Deep South but fewer observers and press to report on it. Posting here because I feel so lost.

How is it not? As a pp said, there's some serious parallels to history and it's playing out right now.
Jews were persecuted in the 2nd world war, and it was a crime to help them/people looked the other way.
Now it seems to be a combination of Islamaphobia/racism.
Why should people have to look the other way and pretend it's not happening?

I think so, there’s definitely some brainwashing. There’s also the people that, calculatingly, know full what is going on and are just fine with it. Usually evidenced by the ones posting circular and misleading responses.

I hear you OP. I’m in the reverse situation to you; a Brit in the US. A long way from Minnesota, but feeling more doubtful by the day that our visas offer us any kind of protection.

I just watched the video from the pink coat woman and I feel shaky and sick. It’s a small mercy, but I’m glad the victim’s colleagues are getting details about him out before the misinformation starts. I’ve seen some horrible stuff in social media over the last few days; posts confidently stating that the elderly Hmong man dragged out of his house in his underwear was harbouring rapist illegal immigrants; that the father of the little boy used as bait was a rapist and criminal… MAGAs will say any old shit to justify ICE’s actions and the truth doesn’t matter at all.

Um it does seem that “whataboutery “ is a useful phrase to pull out when people can’t justify the hypocrisy.
One person gets shot and killed in America people lose their shit.
Many tens of thousands are shot and killed in Iran very little said.
Whats that other useful phrase “people can be concerned by more than one thing at once.”

Which would be hilarious if it wasn’t horrifying, because these are the same people that have been bleating on about their constitutional rights for eternity. Just not other people’s constitutional rights.

What weird whataboutery and intention to derail I assume. People are capable of of caring about more than one thing at once.

I'm really glad people are thinking twice about sending kids to study over there - I have been saying for the last year (since Trump vetoed real science) that anyone studying there would be wasting their money - let alone the threats of sounding different to whichever man is holding the gun in your face. Really not somewhere I would want to go let alone send my kids. I hope we can get some of the sane ones out and start limiting the movement of the dangerous ones. The nazi idealisation that is going along with this should be worrying for everyone over there.

Also foolish to think that they are only interested in actual illegal immigrants. And everybody has their right to due process regardless of immigration status.

Also, the right to not be assaulted or shot dead in the street for recording ICE agents.
