How many funerals have you attended?

I've just attended my second one and I'm 49.
How many have you attended and how old are you?

I think its probably normal to have been to 5 to 10 funerals by age 50. Probably 3 or 4 grandparents, an uncle or aunt, a work colleague or two, a couple or 3 friends - plus in my case my lovely mum when I was in my early 20's. I am mid 50's. Oh I always support friends with their family funeral too, to give them some love.

TheMorgenmuffel · 22/01/2026 19:17

7, I'm 52

RaraRachael · 22/01/2026 19:18

I'm 63 and have lost count of how many I've attended. Where I live there are public notices for funerals rather than by invitation so anyone can go.

Arlanymor · 22/01/2026 19:18

47 and I have been to four, but we're more of a direct cremation family. In fact we'll have one coming up in the next few weeks once legalities are sorted. We make more of a ritual around the scattering of the ashes and then a family meal.

ETA: Just realised I am not 47 until next month - whoops.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/01/2026 19:19

Lots - parent, both PIL, grandparents x3 (I was too young to attend the first), 5 uncles/aunts (and DH'S), 4 neighbours, at least 4 friend's parents, 5 friends (all younger than me) , family friends.
I'm late 50s.

NormasArse · 22/01/2026 19:19

10, I think.

I am missing a good friend’s funeral next week, but I went to see her today in the chapel of rest, to say goodbye 😔.

I’m 59- we were looking forward to celebrating our 60ths this year.

Duidi123 · 22/01/2026 19:19

I’m 30 and I’ve been to 6 of people who I know but growing up a catholic in Ireland it wasn’t unheard of for a funeral to happen as part of Sunday mass so definitely >30 in total.

dadtoateen · 22/01/2026 19:19

Been to 3 of my grandparents, probably another 4 in my lifetime so far (im 49)

all of them obviously upsetting but the worst was one of my friends, he was 19….

CatusFlatus · 22/01/2026 19:20

Attended my 10th today. I'm 59.
The deceased have been aged 16 - 91.
Today's was 91 so, sad but not tragic.

HollyhockDays · 22/01/2026 19:20

Loads. I’m in Ireland and loads of people attend funerals. I was at two in the last week alone. Year before I went to at least three.

Ellanory · 22/01/2026 19:20

Too many to count, unfortunately, including my dad and sibling. I'm 43.

FeelingFineNow · 22/01/2026 19:20

100+

I play the organ in our local church.

But even just within our family and close friends more than 10. 3 grandparents, 2 in-laws, uncle, friend, 2 friends of my parents, great-aunt, great-uncle....

bluewhitebluewhite · 22/01/2026 19:21

I think 2 at 49 is pretty unusual. I’m 60 and I’ve been to loads. Four grandparents, one parent, uncles and aunts. Friends’ parents. A number of colleagues and friends.

ResusciAnnie · 22/01/2026 19:21

3 I think. A great aunt’s Quaker funeral when I was a child, then 20 years later, both of my grandparents’ in quick succession (still got 2 others alive and well). I’m 36.

Iamthemoom · 22/01/2026 19:21

13 I can think of and I’m sure I’ve forgotten some. I’m mid 50s.

PurBal · 22/01/2026 19:21

I’m 35, and I’ve attended 11 (at least, those were the only I could count). And I’m attending another in 3 weeks (MIL). All 4 grandparents, school friend (he was 14), FIL, elderly friend, parent/grandparent of friends x3, uncle.

itsme43 · 22/01/2026 19:22

10 - 36 😩

Daisypopp88 · 22/01/2026 19:22

Im 36 and I've been to 10 funerals sadly.

PermanentTemporary · 22/01/2026 19:22

I’m 56. I think it’s 12.

hellotojason · 22/01/2026 19:23

45 years old and 12 I think.

henlake7 · 22/01/2026 19:23

Mid fifties and can only remember going to one.
Which is weird as I've lost 2 grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

NamelessNinja · 22/01/2026 19:24

I'm 31 and I've been to 9 which seems like a high number for my age according to this thread! One parent, two grandparents in law, one close friend, one work colleague, my brother in law, and the rest parents of friends.

TheNinjaWife · 22/01/2026 19:24

Bizarrely only 1 and I’m 60! My parents, in-laws, grandparents, friends, a sibling and lots of other family members have died over the years.
There have been various reasons for not attending, being too young, covid etc, but the main reason not being in the same country at time of death.

I didn’t include the funerals of people through work. Like you I definitely couldn’t count those.
