How many funerals have you attended?

Mumsntfan1 · 22/01/2026 19:11

I've just attended my second one and I'm 49.
How many have you attended and how old are you?

OP posts:
SouthernNights59 · 22/01/2026 20:11

I'm 66 and I have no idea how many, but there have been a lot. I certainly can't remember how many though.

By your age OP I had attended several, I would say it's pretty unusual to attend only your second at age 49.

Cheepcheepcheep · 22/01/2026 20:12

3 grandparents
1 grandparent in law
2 uncles

I’m 36

Chasingsquirrels · 22/01/2026 20:13

Grandma (I was 16). My Granny died when I was about 7 and I didn't attend, my 2 grandads when I was 21/22 and I don't remember going to either (which makes no sense to me).
Uncle-in-law.
Husband (44)
MIL (46)
Uncle (47)
Friend's mum [edit to add this one]
(Number in brackets being my age at the time).

So 6, that I can definitely say I went to. I'm now mid-50s.

SwirlyGates · 22/01/2026 20:17

I'm 60, and have been to about 5.

Grandfathers both dead before I was born. Unfortunately I didn't go to my grandmothers'. I have no aunts/uncles, no cousins.

A couple of work colleagues died but I couldn't go. No close friends have died.

I've been to my dad's, my FIL's, my great-uncle's, my husband's grandmothers'. That's it, I think.

Middlemarch123 · 22/01/2026 20:17

At least fourteen. Both parents, three grandparents, best friend, various aunts and uncles, colleagues. All sad, some heartbreaking.

Middlemarch123 · 22/01/2026 20:17

Sorry, meant to add, am 64.

Redcandlescandal · 22/01/2026 20:20

Three. I am sixty.

suki1964 · 22/01/2026 20:21

Wayyyyy too many

Im in NI and funerals are huge and if you cant make the funeral , you attend the wake before hand, to pay respect.

Even during Covid when no one was allowed to attend, you stood outside the house as the funeral party left

Travelfairy · 22/01/2026 20:21

Over 50. I am 44 but Irish with a huge family.

JokerOfTwo · 22/01/2026 20:22

4 personal funerals, 2 for friends of my in-laws…. but I worked as a District Nurse for several years and would often get asked to attend funerals for the palliative patients I”we cared for, I think possibly 12 related to work.

FatFoxie · 22/01/2026 20:23

Astonished by these low numbers. I've probably been to at least 30 in my 50 years. If someone I know reasonably well dies and the funeral is a day when I'm not at work, I would likely to go unless it was long way away. Elderly neighbours and relatives, old friends of my parents, parents of my old friends. I think it's a sign of respect to the dead, and to those left behind.

mum2jakie · 22/01/2026 20:24

6 at the age of 49.

One of my kids had been to 4 by the age of 21, sadly including a teenage friend lost to suicide.

Alpacajigsaw · 22/01/2026 20:24

I’m 52 and been to around 15 I think

mum2jakie · 22/01/2026 20:25

Actually it's 7 for me, aged 49.

Very1 · 22/01/2026 20:26

I’m 54 and a I’ve been to 18, although that could be more I’m sure I’ve forgotten a couple.

EmeraldDreams73 · 22/01/2026 20:26

I'm 52 and I've been to loads.

DB's best mate when they were 17 was the first one (brain tumour 😭)

Since then:
Two grandparents (never knew the other two)
Great aunts
Aunts and uncles
Parent of an old friend
Four of my own friends well before their time in the past 4 years.

My parents are always at funerals but they're 86 and 79. I feel like I've been to plenty for the age I am, and I'd like a good long break from them.

CannotBeInterestedInYourDrama · 22/01/2026 20:28

3 grandparents
2 brothers
both parents
4 friends
1 uncle
2 aunties
= 15. I'm 66

slet · 22/01/2026 20:28

Loads, I’m 42.

A parent, 3 grandparents, an auntie, dh’s grandparents and auntie.

But then also lots of family friends, and if my friends have a bereavement I will attend if I can to support them, I’ve been to a handful of those ones when I haven’t really known the person who has died but I go to support the relative and people did that for me too when my dad died which I appreciated.

DeanElderberry · 22/01/2026 20:29

I'm Irish and wouldn't think I was a great funeral-goer, but still at least a dozen a year, maybe more - that is including the funeral home visit and commiserations as 'a funeral'.

SquigglePigs · 22/01/2026 20:29

I'm in my early 40's and have been to about 17 or so (albeit 4 were virtual courtesy of covid, including one of my Grandparents)

Nugg · 22/01/2026 20:30
  1. Both of my grandmothers, both of my parents, Two cousins, three close friends and wider family relatives

I am 56

UniDaysAcoming · 22/01/2026 20:30

1 sadly.
I couldn't go to my dad's as I was in the last week of pregnancy and was a long haul flight away.
I couldn't go to my FIL's because COVID and travel.

BretonStripe · 22/01/2026 20:30

About 12. I'm 44.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2026 20:31

Probably at least two dozen - lots of older relatives, and lately the parents of my friends and a few old schoolmates.

SwirlyGates · 22/01/2026 20:31

FatFoxie · 22/01/2026 20:23

If you move away from your home town, a lot of people could well be far away. Old friends of my parents, or parents of my old friends - I'd go to funerals if they were nearby, or if I were still in contact with the deceased, but if it was 400 miles away and for someone I haven't seen in 30 years, then no.
