How many funerals have you attended?

I've just attended my second one and I'm 49.
How many have you attended and how old are you?

I can think of 16 and I’m in my early 30s. There’s probably more (I’m the youngest in my family and we’ve had some rotten luck/family with bad life choices):

mum & dad,
three grandparents (one was already gone prior to my birth)
Aunt,
Uncles x2,
cousin,
Neighbours x2,
family friends x4
School friend.

Jakadaal · 22/01/2026 20:44

Too many to count. I’m 61 and one of the youngest of 36 first cousins so a large family! The youngest was 39 and the oldest was 97. The hardest was was dear old dad 92 who died in lockdown in his care home. The restrictions on funerals were hard but in hindsight it was a beautiful intimate graveside service

CreamEggsForever · 22/01/2026 20:45

Im
mid 50s and far too many to count, easily double figures and possibly high doubles

Thesuperlativesistillloveyou · 22/01/2026 20:45

7 my wifes son ,her sister, her brother
Bil
Two friends
My gran
I'm late 50s.

lissie123 · 22/01/2026 20:46

im 55

TheWibble · 22/01/2026 20:50

Im 40 and have been to 17 funerals. Possibly a few more, that I may have forgotten. But I've lost both parents, all my grandparents, numerous auntie's and uncles, plus a few friends.

BoarBrush · 22/01/2026 20:50

This is a challenging question, I'm 39, I think it's 23, bound to be some I can't think of.

A few teen suicides.

In later years I've missed loads due to newborns or not being able to afford to travel there (feck all the students in St Andrews) or fucking stagecoach just not turning up!

My childhood/teen friends mum, I'm going, she was like my second mum! My gran, she was lucky I bothered!

GarlicSound · 22/01/2026 20:52

Six at age 70. I only go if it means a lot to the close family. I've missed two due to illness. I went to a massive work-related funeral, but not sure that counts. I wasn't one of the mourners, just an acquaintance.

I enjoy the social part of a funeral! I quite like the idea of big 'wakes' as in Ireland - but it must be utterly exhausting for the bereaved family.

Gotitgotit · 22/01/2026 20:58

About 10
Mum
Dad
Friends x 5 plus residents that I looked after . Aged 60 .

That must be really difficult. It's hard enough losing a parent.

TBF, there was so much to sort out it didn’t really matter. We had fabulous funeral directors (two sisters) that took charge of everything for us.

Papyrophile · 22/01/2026 21:00

I am nearly 70, and I am expecting to start attending friend's funerals before too long. Older kin, you expect to pass, some you liked, some not. But this year, I am very aware that there are only three members of my clans who are older than me. My father, aunt and uncle. Father is 92, his sister 84, my last uncle is 78. I'm 70.

I have been the NC child. My DC has never met their grandpa, for complex reasons at the time. But in the benign light of DF's dementia, I am struggling for an objection to the next generations not creating a new relationship. My male relatives are more awkward round this idea.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/01/2026 21:02

Nine funerals, including two for under 18s. I'm 47.

Papyrophile · 22/01/2026 21:05

S|orry, what I should have said is that I hope my son will like my half-brothers when he meets them. Circumstances have kept them apart, but I think they will hit it off. My fervent hope is that they will take the chance.

Realisation14 · 22/01/2026 21:05

Too many for my age in my opinion. 9 and I'm only 37.

Viszla · 22/01/2026 21:08

Too many to count coz I'm Irish.
Dh has gone to even more. Maybe 10 a year x 20 years...200?

I used to think the massive wakes were so hard on the family too...but then I talked to people who lost a parent during covid and they found that so much harder, not being able to have a funeral.

Sausagesonlegs · 22/01/2026 21:14

About 30 funerals, I'm early 50s in age. Though I live a short drive from crematorium and it's easy to take an hour from work to go to a neighbour's funeral or a close friend's family funeral.

Papyrophile · 22/01/2026 21:15

@Viszla, there's a comfort in a lot of people coming to say farewell.

cornflourblue · 22/01/2026 21:16

I'm so surprised how few funerals some people my age (and older) on this thread have been to.

Maybe it's cultural? Rural/urban?

I've been to the funerals of former colleagues, parents/grandparents of friends, former teachers, neighbours and unfortunately school friends, and well as close and not so close family.

For those of you who have attended very few funerals, would you not attend the above examples?

vanillaskin · 22/01/2026 21:16

41 and 6

2 friends
younger cousin
gran and grandad
mum

I couldn’t get the time off work to go to that many

EnchantedDaytime · 22/01/2026 21:18

20 that I can think of, possibly more. 58, English. Went to 4 last year but that is unusual. Most of my parents generation in my family are still alive.

Viszla · 22/01/2026 21:19

There's usually an evening part of funerals and people who work during the day would go then. Close friends would take time off for the funeral too.

cornflourblue · 22/01/2026 21:20

vanillaskin · 22/01/2026 21:17

In our small community employers give people a couple of hours off, even just to attend the church.

Again, probably cultural.

Leavesandthings · 22/01/2026 21:22

9, late 30s
