How many funerals have you attended?

I've just attended my second one and I'm 49.
How many have you attended and how old are you?

I’m 55 and I’ve been to 4. My mother, my aunt, my grandmother and a close friend. Other funerals (so other 3 grandparents and an uncle) I was too young to attend (or at least my parents thought I was). I couldn’t attend one uncle’s funeral due to the Covid restrictions. I have quite a small family though and I’ve lived at least 250 miles away (or much much further at times) since turning 18 so attending a funeral isn’t straightforward most of the time.

2old4thispoo · 22/01/2026 20:32

Many, possibly hundreds - I'm Irish.

SabrinaThwaite · 22/01/2026 20:32

I’m nearly 60 and it’s 4 - both parents, my sister and my neighbour’s child; the latter was heartbreaking. Too young for grandparents, elderly aunts and uncles etc.

DarkLion · 22/01/2026 20:33

I’m 29 and 5

-my best friend died from mental health when I was 21. Drank alcohol to cope and died from pancreatitis
-my sons nana
-my sons grandad
-my grandad
-my mum 2 years ago when she was 57. Totally unexpected brain haemorrhage due to high blood pressure and that’s the one that affected me the most and changed my life the most

  1. I’m 50.
Connachtfive · 22/01/2026 20:34

I’ve lost count but then I’m Irish and it’s part and parcel of our culture

VivienneDelacroix · 22/01/2026 20:34

I'm 47 and have only been to three. I was under 4 when three of my grandparents died.. I've only been to my grandmother's, ex's grandmother's, and a friend's.

I mean 7. Not 1.

Bennybannsider2 · 22/01/2026 20:35

2 grandparents (too young for the others)
2 uncles
1 aunt via videolink during COVID
3 close relatives of my husband
1 colleague's husband
3 current neighbours
2 childhood neighbours
8? At least ...friends and colleagues' parents- I think this is where Irish/ Northern Irish like me will gather up more funerals as this is normal for us but I don't think it is in GB?
Maybe even more.

hot2trotter · 22/01/2026 20:35

5, and I'm 37

Northsidemammy · 22/01/2026 20:36

Too many to count, also Irish. It's customary to go to funerals of acquaintances, neighbours, family of colleagues etc. I find we treat funerals very differently to English funerals. Most funerals are held within a couple of days of someone dying.

Edited to say I'm 46

familyissues12345 · 22/01/2026 20:36

I hadn’t been to any until I was 34, then I lost two gp in a month so two funerals. We then years later lost fil to bastard Covid. Also been to mum of a friend.

I had others I could have gone to, but didn’t, I wish I had. I found it tough that the first I went to was a close family member and I felt in the limelight and not a clue what to expect.

Same in Scotland. My mother died on the Sunday and the funeral was on the Wednesday.

LeastOfMyWorries · 22/01/2026 20:37

I’m in my forties. Probably 20+ One of the lesser appreciated downsides of having a severely disabled child.

Hellohelga · 22/01/2026 20:37

I’m 58 and 10 I think

Same. 9 last year.

PurpleFlower1983 · 22/01/2026 20:40

I’ve just remembered 2 more, so 16. Not nice forgetting them.

Papyrophile · 22/01/2026 20:40

I have attended two grandparents' funerals, and my mother's. Plus my FIL, several of DH's ancient aunts that I didn't really know. My mother's cousin's, of whom I was fond. One uncle, and his widow's. Two for very close family friends. My DMIL left her body for medical study. We were close while she was lucid, and I think I am the only person who hasn't lamented the lack of a funeral.

IME it’s a backlog at crematoriums - it was a 3 - 4 week wait for both parents.

Alcoholrecovery · 22/01/2026 20:40

I’m 60. Probably been to 15 or 20 thereabouts

BernardButlersBra · 22/01/2026 20:42

10 and lm 44. But my dad's side is quite big so that probably skews the numbers a bit

louderthan · 22/01/2026 20:43

I’m 44 and it’s at least 10

That must be really difficult. It's hard enough losing a parent.

cabbageflower · 22/01/2026 20:43

Atleast 15 - I'm 32.

TheCurious0range · 22/01/2026 20:44

10 I'm 41. Nearly all family DHs or mine. The worst one was a girl I was at school with, I was head girl so expected to go to represent the school, she was 15 when she died. I knew her and we got along but we weren't really close outside of school. It was the second funeral I'd been to, the first was my grandfather's but I was only 2 so I don't remember it. Not something I'd recommend as a starting point to funeral attendance.
