A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Lovely pics Penguins! What a great evening despite rain. Were umbrellas given out? It looks like everyone has the same size in black? 🤔

Lovely photos, havoc, sprouts, and MrsP.
I still can't figure out how to post photos on the MN app Blush

I was rudely awoken in the wee small hours by the sound of Dcat yodeling out the open dining room window and a cat outdoors yodeling back. By 4pm I was fading fast. I really need a solid night of uninterrupted sleep the older I get.

I spent the weekend cleaning my kitchen from top to bottom and then cleaning the vacated apartment of a friend who is moving to live closer to grandchildren. I also filled several bags of my clothes to bring to Goodwill, which I will do as soon as the mechanics call me to tell me my car is in good running order, with a new serpentine belt and an oil change.

We're having a spell of very pleasant weather here, possibly even cooler than temps in the UK.

MyrtleLion · 23/06/2026 09:13

I went to an appointment yesterday and was early so I stopped at a nearby supermarket for a comfort break. My car decided to install some updates and I couldn’t drive it for 50 minutes. I was very late, but the person I was seeing was very understanding.

MrsSPenguinz · 23/06/2026 09:39

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc and @mathanxiety Yes they gave everyone a black umbrella each, there seemed to be two sizes. It's the traditional colour of umbrellas but nowadays people have all kinds of colours and patterns.

That's kind of you to clean friends @mathanxiety

Glad person was understanding @MyrtleLion

Hot here today at 32C, same for next 4 days.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/06/2026 19:18

Oh, geez Myrtle, that would be frustrating! Is there a way to override? 🤔
How nice the venue was prepared Penguins. 😅

Gosh, I feel tired all of a sudden.

OP posts:
MyrtleLion · 24/06/2026 14:28

Sadly I couldn’t override it, and I had to use the physical key in the lock rather than have it near the car or pre the button to open it while it was updating.

We’ve just moved our old broken sofa downstairs and outside (scraping the wall 😔) to be collected tomorrow. The email reminder says they would collect it from inside. I’m not going to share that with my DH.

New sofa arrives tomorrow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/06/2026 02:21

I think I'm happy with my simple gas veh, Myrtle. 🤔🤷‍♀️

I spent the afternoon in the shade at the spray park. There were a couple of school groups there, just one when we arrived, so it was loud and busy, but the kids had fun. I warned my two to watch out for the big kids who play rougher and to keep their hands on their buckets and they were not to share them (exp with broken toys by older kids prev summers). I still had to intervene when Havoc was in a tug-o-war with another kid over the bucket and two more times when kids were trying to get my two littles to "share." 🙄

Temp was around 30c, but the breeze was cooler today. I alternated between the shade of some lovely trees and out on the cement 🥵 watching/with the kids. We stayed about 3 1/2 hours. When I said it was time to go the kids didn't protest at all, so they were ready.😅
It was straight into the bath for us all once home, laundry on and then easy dinner.
Baby has just fallen asleep in my arms and I think I am next and it's not quite 6:30pm!

It's supposed to drop to 20c and rain tomorrow. I don't mind at all.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 25/06/2026 03:30

We had a banging thunderstorm earlier. Dcat emerged from her hiding spot in the bathroom when it was all over, and gave us murderous looks.

Hope everyone is doing OK in the heatwave.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/06/2026 01:54

It was a busy day with driving to/from a med appt for my mum today. Traffic wasn't too bad and fortunately the temp has dropped significantly and was only around 20c today.
I made an iced latte as soon as I got home and a lovely salad for dinner and baked a banana bread. Everyone else got pasta with spinach, feta, tomatoes and chicken for their dinner.

Just had to get a locksmith in. My front door has been sticking for a few days, and this morning when I came back with my dog I couldn't get it to open. The locksmith said he's seen this happen a lot recently, and put it down to the hot weather. He tried re-jigging the mechanism, but ended up having to replace it. I've got 3 keys with it, but I'll need to get some more cut for my relatives.

MrsSPenguinz · 26/06/2026 23:25

Lovely food and drink as ever @Mumtobabyhavoc

Decided it was so hot 35C that we should go out and went to an air conditioned restaurant and had a lovely meal with piano playing. Then went kayaking on the river for 90 minutes with beautiful sunset and birds very active and lots of cows in the fields. We saw one on the May Balls, you can just see it set up from the river photo with tents. DD is off to a ball tomorrow in Oxford, it's the 700th anniversary ball at Oriel.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Evening/ morning .. whatever time !! 😄.

Like many, I have spent the past few nights struggling with sleeping

I mean..me up at my mams house at 6 .15 am to do her garden is just in heard of !!

But I noticed flashes coming through my curtains and noises .

Not heard the heavy patter of rain yet .

But my goodness me..
That thunder sounds good

Ohh ...RAIN !!!!!

think I may go and stand in the garden .!!
....
...

Ohh it has stopped !

bizzey · 27/06/2026 04:13

It is back ..and big !!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/06/2026 08:15

Bizzey, temps look to be dropping there after today, so hopefully you'll get some relief. 🤞
It's 13c here at almost midnight.
Had the dc at the beach this evening - Kits Beach - and we took in a bit of the show at the Show Boat, a very old-fashioned thing there...been around for ages, though. It's singers, dancers, usually kids and teens doing recital-type routines. One girl did tap, for example. It's all very amateur, but it really gives a neighbourhood vibe. i read that tonight's aoccer game was going to be shown there for a watch-party, but I didn't see any evidence of it being set up, likely as it had rained all day, and it was a bit chilly to wait it out until the performances were over. So, we were only there about an hour, but also walked around a bit. We stopped at Siegel's for bagels after. 😋

pics: the stage looking east with downtown in the distance, Kits pool is behind the stage; view looking west and then the view west from a lovely sitting area down the path from the stage/pool area and there are gorgeous homes behind and above that get that view; and then the kids wanted to drive past the stadium, so I took a pic while at a red light on W Georgia at Cambie looking toward Science World dressed as a soccer ball and BC Place is just out of frame on the right.

27 degrees now and should rise to about 30 degrees later. We’re off to my DB for a bbq later. In our air-conditioned car. Can’t wait.

MissConductUS · 27/06/2026 12:36

Penguinz, what a lovely night out you had!

Havoc, beautiful beach pictures, I wish we lived close to a beach.

Bizzey, we've had two nights of heavy rain in the last week, over 3" total rainfall. We really needed it, and it has helped to keep things cool.

Myrtle, temps in the UK and continental Europe have been on the news every night here. They usually find an American tourist to interview about it. Some are coming home early, a bit shocked at the lack of air conditioning.

It's supposed to get quite hot here (38-40 C) next week.

On Thursday, we drove up to the farm and picked blueberries. It's early, so we had to hunt for the ripe ones. We also got some of their organic leaf lettuce for salads.

Then we went to the town pool, which opened last week. They've made a lot of improvements to it in the last few years. There are new bathhouses for showering and changing, and a new snack bar serving burgers, fries, chicken, ice cream, etc. You do have to bring your own chairs. It was lovely, and I expect we'll be there a lot over the summer. It'll be crowded on the weekends, but not during the week. It's a very large pool, so it can handle the crowds.

Well that storm must have helped me somehow .
I did not wake up till 11.55 AM. !!😮😮😲!

I mean , that's sort of teenagery wake up time or really drunk and hungover sort of time ! .....

Anyhow ...still muggy and humid...but I do feel a bit more energized...only a little bit ...to at least clean down the kitchen and bathroom.

They have just have half hearted wipes for the past few days !

Remember...I am looking after 2 houses in case anyone thinks I am lazy !!
i am in fact very lazy 😂😂 when I can get away with it !!

Umanresources · 27/06/2026 23:27

So hot here today. I have a fan blowing on me and I watched a couple of episodes of Cranford. It’s an old series, but I’ve seen there is an online talk about the series available from Mrs Gaskell’s house, which looks really interesting. Thank you @MrsSPenguinz This was three days ago. I didn’t get round to posting.

Went for my diabetic eye examination and the room was air conditioned and was so welcome, but it felt twice as hot when we went back outside.

@MissConductUS that pool looks so inviting.

@Mumtobabyhavoc those photos look fabulous, even with the grey skies.

We’ve had a couple of rainy episodes today, but they don’t seem to have cooled us down at all. My OH went to Tesco today and the fridges and freezers weren’t working, so were empty. I don’t know how long this will be lasting. Thank goodness we have full freezers, although we are getting short on salads! Didn’t think I’d miss lettuce! I should probably sow some lettuce in pots outside for the summer.

OH was watching the England match, but flicked over and got caught up in Rod Stewart at Glastonbury. I’ve seen Rod live, a couple of times, in Manchester. The first time he slipped over and cut his leg. A medic came on and was bandaging Rod’s leg and Rod didn’t stop singing. It was The first cut is the deepest and Rod kept pointing to his leg. He carried on with the rest of the show, but had to cancel his next two dates.
We are back to the football again now.
I’ve been checking my sleep patterns on my Apple Watch. I’m averaging just under 5 hours a night. I sleep for a couple of hours, am awake for a couple of hours, then sleep for a few more hours. I can’t even blame the hot weather because this has been for a few weeks now.

Oh England scored again 2 - 0 so far.

bizzey · Yesterday 00:08

Watched the football and now turned over to watch Rod and Ronnie rocking it at Glastonbury last year. !!

I am smiling but also in awe of these true legends , moving around on the stage like they do !!

bizzey · Yesterday 00:10

Now we have Lulu !

Miss Glastonbury this year 😅

mathanxiety · Yesterday 04:52

Lulu! She must be 90!

I have the coming week off, and I have a list of tasks I need to get done. I dropped off four bags of clothes and sundries to Goodwill today, with more in the pipeline. I need to empty every single drawer, and my wardrobe too, and be ruthless in weeding out clothes I am never going to wear again. Dcat likes to get involved in this kind of chore, so progress may be inconsistent.

We are to have dangerous heat on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, so I may end up visiting the local pool. it looks a lot like your pool, MissC. I hope the heatwave is on the wane across the pond.

My pepper and tomato plants are looking good on the deck, but the squirrels dug up my lettuces. I'll just have to buy lettuce, as usual.

The fireworks have started here already in anticipation of the Fourth. Lots of popping and booming sounds all evening.

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 07:18

Great pics, Miss. Awesome pool! Was it busy when you went?
Bizzey, you needed the rest. It's so nice to sleep-in.
Uman, that must've been quite a concert! Hope eyes are ok? You're another one deserving of a good night's sleep.
Math, naughty squirrels! Food for you re the clean-out. Always feels good, doesn't it?

Busy day here. Had dc to a FIFA Fan Fest at Hastings Park which was super busy by the time we were trying to make our way out. It was rather difficult with my 2y in the stroller and Havoc, 4, walking beside me. People can be a bit rude pushing past. Gives me a bit of anxiety and rage, 🙈 so I was rather proud of myself for biting my tongue and taking a few deep breaths. We popped over to PlayLand after and managed 4 rides, I think, before walking back to the car. I found free street parking in one of the very few unrestricted blocks that was about 6 long blocks away. Google tells me is was about 800m in distance. I figure the walking is good for all of us, especially since the lots are charging "special event" 🙄 rates of $45 and when I'm only there for 2-3 hours max it's a bit outrageous. I bought a season pass for PlayLand and the Fan Fest was free entry, so it was a very cost-effective outing. I did have to leave our water bottles and beach towel behind as they were banned (yet there were water-bottle filling stations inside!!!) and some people were sitting on picnic blankets (!!!).
This Fan Fest advertises as family friendly and to picnic on the lawn...🙄🙄🙄
The weather was quite pleasant as it has cooled off. It was 20c and a bit breezy and overcast.
Did a Costco run after that and the kids were hungry, so I decided to get hotdogs and fries rather than risk making them wait until we got home for a proper dinner.

Pic: There were two viewing areas. One was this lawn area which had three screens and the other, with a huge line to get in, was the new amphitheatre with both free and paid seating. Both have a stage for concerts after and between matches.

Come and tell us your dull and unexciting news 35: Calmly through the day

Umanresources · Yesterday 12:03

@Mumtobabyhavoc OH and I need to have our eyes tested at Costco. The diabetic one doesn’t use lenses, but the drops are to make the pupils dilate, so that the camera takes pictures of the retina. I’ve just remembered that when we go to Costco we usually get a hot dog and a soda. Two years of waiting and I’m up for going there again. We usually look at the books as well. We always bought children’s books to put in my ‘treasure chest’ when I was teaching, as well as small toys and good work and good behaviour were rewarded with choosing something. I also had extra books that they could borrow in addition to their library books. They used to recommend them to other children, which I loved. That’s the part I miss about teaching.
