A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

havoc, it is one of these:

Also known as Pantherophis alleghaniensis. They're very good at rodent control, but not as cuddly as cats.

I don't miss the meltdowns at that age.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/06/2026 20:54

Yeah, listening is a challenge for Havoc today.
Playing with baby in the washing machine (partly) was the final straw. I was set to leave Havoc with my mum, but that lead to the meltdown. Trying to get through lunch now.

I'm not a fan of snakes or spiders. I used to be rather paranoid when I would run in the desert area in Las Vegas (Red Rock Canyon).

@Mumtobabyhavoc I think it is wonderful that you are trying to embrace the World Cup fever !
Especially as it is in your home town.

I know it is limited to what they can participate in...but ...who knows when it will come back near you again and give them an opportunity to experience it.

I did the same at London 2012 Olympics.
I could not afford tickets for anything, but I wanted the boys to experience the Olympics.

We went to lots of free things.
We saw the torch parade, near us .
..(Coca cola were sponsors ...they were giving out old fashioned bottles of coca cola ....my boys were only allowed it on New years Eve !!......)
we went to free thing at Hyde Park on super Saturday,

We went to a paralympic basketball game.

And the ladies and men's marathon cycle race passed bt the bottom of our road !

So we stood there with our flags and obligatory ice cream and cheered everyone in !

Especially the last cyclist !!

14 years ago ...and still remembered as a good time. !

I am enjoying the football !!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/06/2026 03:12

That sounds great Bizzey! I def agree with taking in free events and doing things to take part in some way.

Currently watching Brazil v Haiti, score is 3-0.

Snakes give me the heebie jeebies. I've never seen one around here, thankfully. DD says we have none in this neck of the woods, but that can't be right, imo. There must be plenty in forested areas.

sueelleker · 20/06/2026 08:00

I quite like snakes. I've handled a boa constrictor at a zoo, and a python in Morocco. I can't bear spiders though.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/06/2026 15:18

Oh, Sue! There was someone with some sort of very large snake out on Granville Street offering pics with her and snake when we were there on Thursday. It looked like she helped the person hold the tail-end then they posed for a pic. It was really strange to see that here, I have no idea if it was sanctioned and if she was licensed, though.

@Mumtobabyhavoc At a school summer fair, my son, then aged about eight, had his photo taken with a huge snake draped around him. I wonder where that photo went? The school also used to have regular visits from the Bug Man, who used to bring in things like huge spiders and giant centipedes and African snails. I’m like you @sueelleker and didn’t go near them.

i was in Toronto in 1976, when the Olympics were in Canada. I bought myself a hat and a t-shirt with a maple leaf on them. I’ve got several pictures of other people wearing my hat, but lost it on the same night that I bought it. I think I might still have the t-shirt somewhere.

When the Olymics were in London I was in hospital with sepsis for a few weeks and missed all of them, although DD and I saw the torch on the road to London.

I've also held a baby crocodile at a crocodile farm inland from Malaga. They did have it's mouth taped up though! It was surprisingly heavy-felt like a bag of sand.

MrsSPenguinz · 20/06/2026 21:36

Love the dress @bizzey

Love the pictures @Mumtobabyhavoc and glad you had a great day out.

Food sounds lovely @Umanresources

Thanks @MissConductUS DH has a Sunbeam Talbot and another classic car in France (and probably more secret ones!). Gosh a snake. I haven't been paying much attention to World Cup either but I can hear when England play the score from the pub cheers.

Did gardening on Thursday for 5 hours with DH then on Friday we went on an Invitation to View Historic houses tour in Norfolk, we saw the house, the gardens, the church, they played us organ music then we all had afternoon tea. Had smoked salmon and egg sandwiches, then scones baked whilst we were there with cream and homemade jams, and 3 cakes as well we could have victoria sponge, chocolate and ginger or coffee cake with earl grey tea. Very nice day out.

Today DH and I have been cleaning - I did the bathroom upstairs and went through all of the kitchen cupboards, sorted fridge, cleaned cooker, microwave, walls, floor and DH did some papers in the dining room and hoovered wherever we have carpet. Was good to get that all done.

I have planning permission off for the shed /summerhouse now, takes 15 weeks or so as listed.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Its hot here, today was about 27C so OK but it goes up to 34C next week and every day for next 2 weeks is forecast as sunny. I am loving having DH retired, its only been a week but we can get so much done and have nice days out.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 21/06/2026 09:48

I was abruptly hauled out of a deep sleep at 4.20am by Senior Cat meowing loudly and persistently at the side of the bed. The last time she did this, it was to show me a large dead mouse - still warm - that she was obviously very proud of. Today’s crack of dawn offering? A laurel leaf. Evidently a very special laurel leaf which required my immediate attention…

Umanresources · 21/06/2026 11:57

Oh @ACatAsleepInYourHat I love cats, but little gifts from them would be my nightmare. At one time many years ago we ended up with 6 cats. We live near lots of open land, green belt in front of us and also behind us, so lots of opportunity for small wildlife. There is a small children’s park behind us and someone mentioned it as ‘The Secret Park’ on Facebook. Now it’s been labelled on Google Maps as ‘secret’ 😂Thankfully it’s very exclusive and doesn’t get many unwelcome visitors.

Sounds like that was a lovely day out @MrsSPenguinz. I love looking round old houses and the tea sounds great. We are hoping to take my grandsons to an old Manor House nearby. It seems to have some very interesting hands on experiences for families.

MrsSPenguinz · 21/06/2026 12:30

Going to a manor house with your grandsons sounds lovely @Umanresources

This was our first Invitation to View Historic Houses tour as they are normally in the week and it was very good and vast majority of them you don't need to be members to go. It was £20 each for the tour and afternoon tea. Some areas seem to have a lot more than others, think it started in Suffolk.

Thank you @MrsSPenguinz this looks great. I’ve had a quick look and there is one near us. I went on a guided tour of the Lowry art gallery once and it was brilliant listening to the volunteer guide, who was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, which really increased the pleasure.

Umanresources · 21/06/2026 12:54

@MrsSPenguinz I’m delighted to have found some online sessions on the Mrs Gaskell site, via the Historical houses site. Thank you so much. Sounds like just up my street! I’m excited to book some sessions, as it’s obviously accessible for everyone.

MrsSPenguinz · 21/06/2026 17:46

So glad you found something @Umanresources Lots of lovely places on the Invitation to View tours. We did join Historic Houses for a year and was great but then they almost doubled the membership cost so we didn't renew but we may rejoin now we have all week. The Invitation to View ones you can go without being members unless it says Members Only which is very rare. Its generally the owners who show you round their house and gardens and then some have afternoon teas.

We have just been gardening for a couple of hours but its hot so stopped. We are out tomorrow for the Trinity May Ball punting.

sproutsandparsnips · 21/06/2026 22:26

Just catching up.
How amazing for your DS @bizzey!
Exciting that the football so close to you @MissConductUS
Conference was good @MrsSPenguinz- but I left my favourite waterbottle behind - a colleague has picked it up.
Been away for DS2 rugby tour, a good time had by all. Lovely spot near Aberystwyth.
DS1 going away tomorrow to Europe on the train. Will be very hot…….

Just hanging out at the splash park with dc. It's 27c and breezy I think I'll pop by Costco for a prawn taco kit, rotisserie chicken and some veg.

In bed catching up on the things ... listening to the beautiful sound of lots of rain ....after
having watered my mothers garden this evening !! 😀 😁😁🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Tis not a small garden either !!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/06/2026 03:13

So glad to see rain there as it looks like it broke that heatwave. 🤞

I've got fans on in all the rooms. It feels well over 30c inside, so the fans are making it quite pleasant. Even though it's quite breezy the wind feels warm.
