A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

There's cream for that?

Yes, the drug name is fluorouracil. It's quite a nasty preparation, and you either have to wash your hands after use, or (as I did) wear disposable gloves whilst applying it. It kills off the surface cells, and is also used for things like keratotic lesions. The skin gets sore and inflamed during use, and can bleed.

Wow. I had no idea. I've had 5 moles removed, three recently. So, I'm trying to stay on top of it as I'm fair.

I'd wear gloves, too. Is it your first try using it? I hope this is successful for you. 🩷

Yes, I've never had this condition before. I did know of the preparation though, as I used to work in a hospital pharmacy. When my GP prescribed it, he thought the pharmacy might have to order it in; but they had it in stock. Apparently, they're seeing more people with skin conditions that need it.

How did the Dx come about? Were you suspicious of something? It often goes unnoticed - even by doctors.

@sproutsandparsnipsWe have central heating and central air conditioning. There's a gas furnace in our basement, and ductwork runs up through the floor or walls of every room in the house. The AC condenser sits outside the house and delivers chilled refrigerant to a coil in the same ductwork, so cold air enters the house through the same vents as the heat. By the way, what app do you have for identifying birdsongs? I use one called Merlin, which was developed at Cornell University. It may be specific to the US.

Below are pictures of the AC condenser. It was not imported from a city in North Yorkshire. The manufacturer is located in York, Pennsylvania, and takes its name from that city.

The time I had a skin cancer identified, the dermatologist froze it with a spray.

DS is not visiting us this weekend. I suspect he's been attending parties or events related to the current Knicks basketball frenzy. It's good that he's developing a social life in his new town. Hopefully, we can include him in our weekly FaceTime meeting with DD and SiL, which starts in about 30 minutes.

I'd had a scaly patch on my hip for a while, but it never bothered me; I just thought it was rough skin. When it started getting sore when I caught it on my knickers, I went to the doctor. It's a very slow-growing sort, called Bowen's disease, so there's no panic. The GP took one look, checked a few pictures on-line, and confirmed the diagnosis.

Thanks, Sue. I've just read about it. Interesting it is often misdiagnosed as psoriasis or eczema. I have both, so will get doc to take a closer look.

Had the kids out for a walk around Deer Lk in Burnaby after dinner. It takes us about an hour due to little legs and multiple stops looking for frogs and turtles. About 3/4 of the way around a lady was warning people she had just seen a bear nearby. Bears and coyotes are not uncommon, signs are posted warning to use caution because of them and there were also signs posted warning of recent bear sightings. I just hurried the kids along for that last part back to the car.

Luckily, I've never suffered from either of those; so I knew it had to be something else.

sproutsandparsnips · 08/06/2026 14:29

Ooh a bear @Mumtobabyhavochow exciting! DS was disappointed we saw no bears during our time in Canada despite him spending hours on the viewing platform looking.
@MissConductUSyes I use the Merlin app, it’s very good isn’t it?
Day off today, I have been to give blood.

MrsSPenguinz · 08/06/2026 15:11

A bear @Mumtobabyhavoc that's exciting and lovely day out.

Lovely bird photos @sproutsandparsnips

Sorry about the job @MyrtleLion hope you get something soon.

Love the strawberries @MissConductUS

We have heard from DD that she is spending summer in Oxford apart from coming here so we can go on holiday and to go on a trip to Paris with 2 boys from Oxford. Have booked our holiday to Sri Lanka.

Other than that did cleaning and gardening yesterday for 5 hours. Loved having the silkies with me and the silver one is often by my side and she sings and makes happy noises and snuggles up.

bizzey · 08/06/2026 15:11

Packing my bag today to go away for a few days 😁!

It was going to be my rucksack but I have now changed it to a small pull along suitcase as my back is sore and the weather forecast is so chanable at the moment I haven't a clue what to pack !

So in true Bizzey fashion...I take nearly everything I own 😂😂😂!

Got to still decant my toiletries into smaller pots and lable them !

I am downloading programs into my for in preparation for a long and boring train ride !

Any UK people who have watched Murder in Paradise ....which of the older series was the best ?

I have only really got into it recently .

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/06/2026 15:26

Sue, definitely lucky and very smart, too!
Sprouts, I think it's now three years since your trip, isn't it? Where were you trying to spot a bear? Dud you go to the grizzly habitat up on Grouse Mtn?

I spent a bit of time online last night looking for more info about local bear sightings and learned they're frequently seen on Burnaby Mtn and around Trout Lake. I frequent both places with the kids and I honestly never think about them unless I see the signs. I came across a Bear Area map and am quite amused by the wording as designated. Do they know? Are they expected to remain within bounds? 🤔

So, have had about 4 1/2 hrs sleep. 🙄
I fell asleep after 12:30am, Baby woke me up just before 5am. 😩 Baby has an activity and we need to leave in about an hour. 😫
Havoc just got up.
I've got the tv news on. They're covering the installation of our new Governor General. I think it is all very uniquely Canadian. There was drumming and singing by the indigenous nations (I find it very moving) outside before everyone entered the hall and now, inside, a performance of La Reine (Sara Dufour).

Saw this in the supermarket and it reminded me of you guys all making seaweed a while back.
I haven’t caught up on the thread but hope you are all well.
I have had a turbulent May. I had to kick my husband out of the house (won’t go into why) and then my Aunt (who I was close to) died.
I am hoping June will be a bit nicer but obviously there is still lots to sort out with the divorce.
On the dull news side my sore shoulder is now well enough that I am getting back into swimming. I have swum half a dozen times, mostly at the outdoor lido. Today I managed 15 laps at the gym and had a chill in the hydro pool, sauna and steam room.

The furnace I mean 😅

MissConductUS · Yesterday 20:29

Dandy, that's awful. Stay strong, and I hope you have friends and family to lean on while you deal with it all.

Have a lovely trip, bizzey

I had my last cardiac rehab session yesterday. It was number 36. They gave me a graduation certificate and asked if I was going to join a gym. I'm glad that's over. The parking at the hospital was a nightmare.

DH and I went out to dinner last Saturday, and they had a lobster ravioli special, which was fabulous. We asked the owner where they sourced them, and he gave us the name of a local pasta maker. After my last rehab session, we drove over there and bought five packages of the lobster ravioli. We had one for dinner last night, and the rest are in the big freezer in the garage.

It's a lovely spring day. My zinnias are doing well, and we've started to harvest the romaine lettuce for salads. There are blossoms on the tomato plants (to the left of the lettuce), but we're probably a month away from having tomatoes to eat.

And that's how we like it, too. You can always count on it being a safe space free of politics and bitching because you can find that everywhere else. ☺️
(You might even see some of us letting off steam on other boards. )

Welcome. 🩷

I do wonder how long it will take for AC to become more standard in the UK. My house was unbearable in the latest bank holiday heat wave, so difficult to sleep. We are just not used to it being an issue though, we spend all winter worrying about being too cold.
