A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It is a lose-lose for Starmer, regardless. The NEC is packed to the gunnels with the pro-Starmer crowd - who suggested earlier in the week that Burnham would have zero chance of being approved.

It would be a cowardly move but I wouldn't put it past them.

If that decision is made, then they will just fit whichever narrative lands the best. It won't matter because Burnham supporters won't accept the premise of any excuse.

Edited

Agree with this. I'll be surprised if they allow Burnham to stand. The cost of a mayoral election is the most likely excuse the NEC will use imo.
I think Burnham knows that they'll block him too, but its still a win. He retains his status as King across the water.

Either way, Starmer is massively weakened.

Of the 41 members of the NEC, only ten will be in the room to decide whether the Mayor of Greater Manchester will be granted permission to stand, resigning from his role as mayor in the process.

The ten members understood to be:

  • Shabana Mahmood MP (Chair of Labour’s NEC)
  • Peter Wheeler (Vice Chair of Labour’s NEC)
  • Keir Starmer MP (Leader of the Labour Party)
  • Lucy Powell (Deputy Leader of the Labour Party)
  • Mike Payne (NEC Treasurer)
  • Ellie Reeves (Frontbench Representative)
  • Keiran O’Neill (GMB Representative)
  • Tom Williams (USDAW Representative)
  • Abdi Duale (CLP Representative)
  • Gurinder Singh Josan (PLP Representative)

He might as @DenizenOfAisleOfShamesays he’s a cowardly shit but it will be really bad for him too.

And possibly end up opening a leadership bid from Streeting instead. A whole bunch of angered backbenchers and main party names will be hard to contain.

Yeah. There is no way for Starmer to come out of this looking good or not being politically damaged... unless, of course, they allow Burnham to stand and then he then loses.

That is interesting at least Starmer can’t do his usual ‘it didn’t come across my desk’ it was someone else.

The least bad for Starmer might be Burnham running as @upstartledsays but then he’s leading a party that can’t even hold onto a decent majority and whoever he loses to will gain from it.

That’s it.

Mahmood has the casting vote in the event of a tie, incidentally.

If Burnham is blocked, ultimately I think our old tax-evading friend will look to capitalise on the anger amongst the LW, before making a return.

Starmer could not have chosen a better week to be away, next week - hob nobbing in the PRC….

Listening to Mahmood on Kuennsberg atm I infer she has every intention of blocking Burnham.

On a lighter note, Kemi is the guest on Desert Island Discs at 10am today.

Well well well….its not dull, is it? Burnham was saying he’d go for 50 percent top rate when he was talking about if he was leader last time…I don’t think it’s the change the uk needs…add that to the never increasing thresholds…

meanwhile, graduate jobs and wages situation is the it has ever been..

Two thirds of graduates aren’t even paying off loan interest

Rates of up to 6.3 per cent mean most that borrowers who have started repaying their loans are not getting any closer to clearing their debt

Surely if he did that, they'd have to look at thresholds at the same time?

It’s horrendous that isn’t it. We’re going to try our best to make sure our kids don’t need to take out any student loans. They’re a scam after all. It’s the last thing kids need when they’ve finished a degree, but obv I know unavoidable for many. The interest goes on from the day they take a loan. People saying ‘but they never need to pay it back if they don’t earn past xx’ drives me bonkers.

As the old still living afaik philosopher whose name I can’t remember said, it’s a method of state control, from a very young age.

Yet since Blair- it’s just got worse. No one looks after the young people - from birth it’s dog fight.

Urgh bad nights sleep!

Januaryescape · 25/01/2026 09:53

It drives me mad too - why raise your children with the expectation they should take out loans, pay interest on them their whole life and never pay them back? Agree, yet more freedom and motivation sapping.

you’d hope they would look at the thresholds wouldn’t you @NoWordForFluffy but I’ve got no confidence they would - the snp have the higher rate at 43k plus and no change in sight.

If they're never going to earn above X, there's no point going to uni!

I'm hoping that our two want to have careers where they can get apprenticeships instead of going to uni. At least then if a degree is needed as part of the apprenticeship, the employer will pay and it'll be a day release thing.

AnnasFangs · 25/01/2026 10:03

It could possibly be tricky for Burnham to complain if he is blocked, given he benefitted from an imposed shortlist.

Burnham won't need to complain, he's building an army who'll do it for him.

My son is earning 7p per hour above minimum wage with a degree and a two year masters under his belt come summer. The interest rate is now 8% I discovered recently. He's doing what he loves but five years of university 🙈

Januaryescape · 25/01/2026 10:15

I can’t understand how the govt can think the various plans are fair - why one particular cohort has an 8 percent rate and the rest have RPI..yet another unfair and broken system.

Burnham will not be the one complaining, that’s for certain. Rayner’s in front of him.
