A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Starmer is such a snivelling little arse. I hope this blows up in his face.

Well, he’s definitely going to attempt to shank Powell now, isn’t he?

Meantime, cometh the hour, cometh the flame-haired tax dodger…

redange · 25/01/2026 12:13

If Andy Burnham was not a 'Coward' or a Con Man, he would stand as a Independent at the By- election. Obviously he wanted to become Prime- Minister . Coward's the lot of them, 'Clowns to the Left Jokers to the Right'. The, Labour Party are a shower of absolute 'Shite' ... in the words of Corporal Jones 'Were Doomed'....

EasternStandard · 25/01/2026 12:15

Powell is more about the backbenchers as deputy LL I think and interesting she was the 1 vote for. The rest thinking of their hides.

Januaryescape · 25/01/2026 12:24

Definitely an authoritarian power play there. Starmer probably ‘had to’ do that, in a lose-or lose bigger situation.

latest political currency interesting in French politics - parallels here, saying France needed to coalesce against a centrist left candidate and not a lurch to populist left, as they think in a Nat Front vs populist left showdown, NF wins..

NoWordForFluffy · 25/01/2026 12:25

I'm glad I'm using this mug today...very apt!

Can't wait for the inevitable leadership challenge from within! 🤣

Yes Jordan will be a hard opponent for them.

Indeed! This and the Chagos humiliation (and the lovely ladies on this thread 😀) have made my weekend 😂😂

Andrea Egan, the new general secretary of the Unison union, said: 'I know many, many trade unionists will be so disappointed and angry at local members not being given a say over who their candidate should be. This isn’t the way any democratic organisation should be run.'

Gloves off, knives out…

The more I think about this the worse it looks for Starmer. Not only does he look like an appalling coward for shutting the door on Burnham but this will rekindle memories of his attack on Streeting - and it was Starmer: anyone who thinks he wasn’t behind knifing Streeting is a congenital idiot. And Powell will be making the backbenchers very angry and restless.

As far as we are all concerned - happy days 😊

Yep. His best bet was probably letting him stand.

TheNuthatch · 25/01/2026 12:47

Cheers 🍻 @NoWordForFluffy

What a mess. Interesting that Powell voted for AB to stand, with Starmer and his cronies in the room voting against.

💯

Streeting made some comments yesterday about the attacks on Burnham from the Starmer mob, reminding everyone what happened to him. This looks appalling for Starmer and he can't shirk it as he was on the panel.

Craven prick sums up Starmer

Hyperobject · 25/01/2026 12:57

Surely its got to be odds on that Labour will now lose the Gorton by-election, most likely to a left-wing candidate?

Who, in Manchester, is going to work hard for a candidate imposed by Starmer?

Labour voters will either stay at home or cast a protest vote.

Januaryescape · 25/01/2026 13:10

Literally a choice between trying to end it now or a slow burn leadership challenge unfolding. Oh wait…

Upstartled · 25/01/2026 13:15

8 to 1...bet Powell was popular!

She’s secured her spot when the next leader cometh ;

Plus backbenchers will all air their grievance to her

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 25/01/2026 14:04

I’ve just read Labour’s statement. It’s grimly hilarious. Do they seriously expect anyone to believe that blocking Burnham was about money? Utterly transparent rubbish.

peacefulpeach · 25/01/2026 14:18

‘The decision was made by 10 members of the NEC, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, party chair Ellie Reeves and the prime minister himself on Sunday morning.

NEC sources told the BBC the vote was 8-1 in favour of blocking Burnham's candidacy.

The prime minister was among those who voted to block Burnham from standing.

Mahmood abstained as the chair, while Labour's deputy leader Lucy Powell voted to allow him to stand.’

So 2 women essentially supported Burnham. Shocker.

The 2024 general election cost £94.5m. Wonder whether the UK will be able to afford that in 2029?

Upstartled · 25/01/2026 14:33

I read something on Labour List which suggested that is custom for the chair, Mahmood, to abstain. I think they are reserved for tie breakers.

Oh interesting..

@strawberrybubblegum Probably not but it won’t stop anyone will it.. Chicken feed compared to the US campaigns in 2014 - $14 billion. Incredible - disgusting all of it.
