Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

@Mithral 4 things affect price: colour, cut, clarity and carat. A poor colour and clarity of a larger diamond will make it cheaper than a very good colour (D/E) diamond with no inclusions (good clarity) and a fabulous cut. Of course smaller can be more money.

What, every single one you have seen in your entire life? I can only think of one person I know who has that type of ring (although hers is yellow gold), there is a huge variety of designs, metals, stones, amongst my friends and family. I love looking at other people's rings.

Here's mine. The diamonds are relatively mini compared to the sapphire.

I don't like them, find them cliched, didn't bother with an engagement ring as a result, but others do. Different tastes.

Yes I know! I feel like I must be being very unclear - I was saying that where you have two diamonds of equal quality the bigger will be more expensive! There is not a special value to being exactly 1 carat.

This is what I am disagreeing with: Whole carats are actually more expensive than a 0.9 or 1.1

@Mithral No special value attached to 1 ct but stones should be cut to attain the best result for that stone. Each stone is valued individually and all aspects of CCCC are taken into account. If absolutely identical, yes, the bigger stone is more money but I agree, 1 ct makes no odds if the 1 ct is not the best clarity, colour or cut.
