Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

I think they look fabulous, but very impractical.

Beekman · 09/01/2026 00:46

How big are we talking? Elizabeth Taylor size or just bigger than yours?

Eggybreadwithnuts · 09/01/2026 00:46

Is it a showy status thing

Sounds like you’re jealous.
I have quite a few very flashy diamond rings and I love the fiery rainbow brilliance of them.
I bought them myself.

Oh

I think that a big emerald cut diamond on a thin band looks amazing tbh

Would have to buy myself one though, given my current aversion to that gender 😒😒😒

HeddaGarbled · 09/01/2026 01:00

Because they’re magically beautiful: the way the facets catch the light and reflect colours. Everyone, everywhere values diamonds - that’s why they’re worth so much.

You’d love one too really, wouldn’t you? It’s OK: you don’t have to pretend because you think it’s cool to pretend you don’t.

ThatCalmFinch · 09/01/2026 01:04

Because diamonds are a girls best friend?

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 09/01/2026 01:06

I'm assuming it's because they like them.
You don't, so don't get one.

justsayitonemoretime · 09/01/2026 01:10

I like the look of them, even the better costume diamond rings, on nice-looking hands in the right setting.

I have a diamond solitaire, ( the fashion when I got married) and from the time my first child was born, it went in it's box as it was a pain in the butt, always needing cleaning, always catching on clothing and most of all of course, my LO's tender skin.
Last time it came out of it's box, I found it only fit on my baby finger, and I don't miss it at all.
I see the appeal in faceted diamonds though, I secretly love bling; just not on me.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 09/01/2026 01:15

They're just pretty.

I don't know what 'big' is for you. I might think a ring with a solitaire of 2 or more carats, or one with a cluster of stones around 1 carat in size looks too big to be practical, but I'd still be captivated by the beautiful twinkling 😂

Starseeking · 09/01/2026 01:19

Because they are so sparkly 😍😍😍

I’m not married or engaged, here’s hoping “my husband is coming”!

Kleptronic · 09/01/2026 01:20

I wanted one, but then my current husband got me one that was 0.7 ct and I still married him, so meh

WilfredsPies · 09/01/2026 01:26

Different tastes perhaps? That would seem the obvious explanation.

Appleblum · 09/01/2026 01:27

Because they are so sparkly and who doesn't like sparkly things?

OSTMusTisNT · 09/01/2026 01:31

I agree as I have small hands, ring size J, and would looked swamped with a huge stone.

HoseGoblin · 09/01/2026 01:36

Because different people like different things. My ring is made with dinosaur bone and I'm sure there's plenty of people who would think that is tacky and gross but I don't care, my finger my rules.

worstnotholiday · 09/01/2026 01:36

They aren’t for me. So I have an alternate antique amethyst. (Also- massive diamond is probably outside of my comfort price. Anything that costs more than a deposit on a good house is not what I’d spend that money on)

However. Surely cheap is not a descriptive that suits a big diamond?!?! That’s nonsense. They are, like a Rolex, a significant indicator of riches. Tacky? Maybe dependent upon taste. Ugly? Again an unusual stance but one which is based upon personal taste.

Id also wonder how many “massive” stones you are seeing op? Obviously I run in less well to do circles than you- but I have seen a handful of massive diamonds in my life. Lots of diamonds. Lovely Hugh carat ones. Often very similar and yes not exactly unique. Lots of big stones. MASSIVE stones? Very few.

Strokethefurrywall · 09/01/2026 02:20

🙄 For the same reason anyone likes anything - big cars, designer shoes, labeled clothes, handbags, watches. Because they like them and can afford them.

CamillaMcCauley · 09/01/2026 02:46

I thought threads about other threads were banned.

canuckup · 09/01/2026 02:47

I just cannot get past the human price of it all

BreakingBroken · 09/01/2026 03:04

well judging by how many women on this site place themselves in very vulnerable positions; maybe starting with a rock the size of a walnut isn't a bad idea (although gold bars might be better).
the women should certainly charge for home organization and demand substantial "push presents" for each child birthed (one years salary)
this way when he leaves/cheats/becomes abusive she has 1) a massive diamond 2) a savings account.

HoratioBum · 09/01/2026 03:09

No problem with them personally but I do think really huge ones just look like costume jewellery and therefore defeat the purpose as I imagine that most people assume it’s a zirconia rather than something that cost tens of thousands of pounds.

applegingermint · 09/01/2026 03:13

Because they look sparkly and nice. Plus, lab made diamonds have made them accessible to the masses.
