Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

The only ostentatious thing I own is my huge diamond engagement ring. I love it. My first engagement ring was tiny and came from Argos Elizabeth duke. It’s lovely to have a ring that I get so much happiness from wearing.

Me too.

I don’t wear designer clothes/shoes/handbags, I don’t drive a flash car, we go on modest holidays, I don’t have a jewellery box full of precious metals and stones……
My engagement ring is the only thing I own that’s extravagant. I’ve got tiny hands, so it does look pretty massive - it’s a 1 carat natural black diamond, halo set with white diamonds, on a platinum band. I’ve told DH I don’t ever want to know how much he paid for it. I wear it every single day and it only comes off if I’m doing something particularly messy in the kitchen, like kneading bread dough or something. It’s insured and it’s cleaned by a jeweller every once and a while and inspected for any signs it needs some TLC.

Is it a showy status thing

Well if you know the answer then why post asking the question

Gowlett · 09/01/2026 08:58

I don’t have an engagement ring.
I like them on other people, though.

Because they’re beautiful and I love diamonds. My first engagement ring was a 1ct emerald cut diamond in a halo with a pave band and I had a matching wedding band. It was stunning. I’m hoping if I ever get married again I’ll have a big old 3ct solitaire and I’ll never take it off. Might even buy one for myself

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 09/01/2026 09:16

They don’t appeal to me, but I saw an advert for a scissor cut diamond that was actually rather lovely.

I don’t want to have to look after a piece of jewellery though, so choose rugged things.

I'm with you OP I totally fail to understand the interest in sparkly things or why women are expected to like them more than men.
See also fancy handbags, sunglasses, designer clothes. I am dull and practical and even though I could have afforded these things I wouldn't be interested in getting them. I am however very happy to spend my money on endless trips and holidays so feel free to still give me a raise dear boss.
Different strokes...

You sound like me. I'm dull and practical. I use my hands a lot - cooking and gardening mainly, and if I had a big, flashy ring I would hardly wear it.
I see a hand bag as something practical to carry stuff in (although I would want it to look nice), and as for sunglasses I have magnetic clip ons for my regular glasses.

I'm so boring, but my main indulgence is earrings.

They want big, huge diamond rings to show that they have big, huge amounts of money.

I'm sure some women do, but I think a lot of women genuinely like them.

They just aren't my cup of tea.

curious79 · 09/01/2026 09:30

My engagement ring doesn’t have a massive diamond in fact, and doesn’t look like an engagement ring, and that was intentional. I wanted to design a ring that’s very interesting and that I wear every day.

I do, however, have a 3 carat yellow diamond that I bought myself and it’s an absolute blinder. It sparkles beautifully. I really enjoy the stone and the setting-it’s not just on a simple band. I was at an exhibition last week in Paris and there was a 90 carat pear drop diamond pendant. Amazing! I quite fancy that too. I’m a total magpie. It’s got nothing to do with showing off .

Pigeon123456 · 09/01/2026 09:32

I have a big sparkly lab diamond and I absolutely adore it. It was a 10th wedding anniversary gift from my husband. The sparkle is incredible especially when I’ve just cleaned it. I am left handed and was very very picky when choosing it; I wear my ring every day (except for things like strength training, cleaning, swimming) and it never gets in the way.

JetSkiRental · 09/01/2026 09:36

The same reason people want the nicest car they can afford, or the biggest house they can afford, or the best item on the menu that appeals to them? It’s quite human to want nice things. I wanted the biggest diamond that fit into our budget because I love shiny things and I’m a bit of a magpie. My engagement ring will be the most expensive piece of jewellery I’ll ever own and thanks to lab grown diamonds it’s not even a moral issue anymore. Why shouldn’t I have a big shiny ring if I can afford it and it brings me joy?

Sounds like you’re jealous.
I have quite a few very flashy diamond rings and I love the fiery rainbow brilliance of them.
I bought them myself.

👍
Why do people want these? Hmmmm, let me think 🤔 😁

You have to admire De Beers for their determination 🤣

they still control the markets (obv not blood diamonds etc)

SouthernFashionista · 09/01/2026 09:47

Gosh, I love my bling. I have a five diamond eternity ring and it makes me very happy. I love it.

Because they are so sparkly 😍😍😍

I’m not married or engaged, here’s hoping “my husband is coming”!

I bloody love this song! It's just brilliant even though I have never been or plan on getting married ( I'm quite anti marriage actually) but I happily sing along to this super song. I hope you get your diamond ring xx

Sameshitedifferentdaze · 09/01/2026 10:06

Obvious AI post.

What is taking him so long?
To find me hee hee hee

Awww, thanks. Here’s hoping 2026 will be the year for me.

Hope everything goes well for you too xXx

I got engaged to my DH with a 1.5ct black diamond in a Tiffany setting. Cheap as chips at £155 in 2003 and I loved that it was black and basically fancy coal. DH joked that it was black like my soul and I adored that ring. Is now far too big for me and I don’t really wear rings die to arthritis. But a decade ago or youngest, who was absent at our wedding and we had (very selfishly) married before she was born, begged us to get married again. So we had no4 child’s Big Fat Wedding /view renewal. My DH bought me a beautiful huge oval opal cabochon set in gold. I don’t suit tiny dainty jewellery so this made my year. I love it and how the colour ch as need in sunlight and I get so many compliments on it every time I wear it. Again, not hugely expensive. I think it was about £500?

i couldn’t ever justify spending a cars worth of money on a diamond when there are SO many other beautiful and rarer stones that are just as/more gorgeous. I’d love a Burmese ruby. A vintage moonstone choker. A black opal. Diamonds don’t even come in my top ten.

Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?
chunkyBoo · 09/01/2026 10:28

I have 3, only 1 has a claw setting which is really annoying as it’s always getting caught on clothes so I rarely wear it.
the other two are in a bezel type setting which are easy to wear.
i really don’t like the look of enormous stones in a ring (mine are all around 1 carat), BUT I’d love to have one that size lol

ConcernedOfClapham · 09/01/2026 10:31

Why do some people watch reality TV? Others gorge on vacuous Social Media accounts? Why do some devour newspapers or 24hr news channels?

because we’re all built differently, it’s just life 🤷‍♂️

Newbie8918 · 09/01/2026 10:35

Sounds like comparison is thieving your joy. If larger rings are not for you, why do you care enough to even post? Just dont get/accept one.

BuildbyNumbere · 09/01/2026 10:37

Personal taste. Maybe people think some of the things you wear look tacky and cheap. Why judge?!?

Eggybreadwithnuts · 09/01/2026 00:42

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

Because they’re not content with themselves so feel the need to ‘be someone’ and prove they are worthy. I agree big ones look like ‘my big fat gypsy wedding’

Mum2Fergus · 09/01/2026 10:44

Why do people want anything. Generally because it’s their personal choice.

Hoolahoophop · 09/01/2026 10:47

Love them, big sparkly gorgeous. But not a solitaire engagement ring for me. Too impractical to wear all the time. I would have it fitted into something else, a necklace, bracelet or tiara, and wear them less constantly.

I also prefer the look of fussy vintage jewelry. Emerald, ruby or sapphire with diamonds around them.
