Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

I have a nice engagement ring - it's an E. Lots of people would turn their nose up at it, as the diamond is likely far smaller than the diamonds other people have on their engagement ring. But I wanted 4C over size and others want size over 4C. Such is the benefit of free will.

Personally, I think big and gaudy is tacky and nasty, and it does remind me of Big Fat Gypsy Wedding - but that's my personal opinion. And it is just as valid as not liking grey walls, or leather sofas, or even facial hair.

Luckily thoughts aren’t facts. But clue is in your sentence and the use of “I”. Because they are not you and they don’t think that.

Different tastes perhaps? That would seem the obvious explanation.

Oh no dont bring logic into it!

I don't understand the "you must be jealous" posts. I'm not a ring fan, but don't have a problem with other people enjoying them.

I dislike parsnips and whiskey and I'm not jealous of people who like them either.

Boromirsgreyhound · 09/01/2026 12:01

I think posting personal opinions for clickbait is ugly and cheap

SingtotheCat · 09/01/2026 12:53

They are mesmerising on the hand. That is all.

I think the difference is that people aren’t posting about parsnips or whisky because most people probably don’t care who prefers them.

The OP is coming across as being quite derogatory about large, sparky rings so people are responding accordingly.

Emmz1510 · 09/01/2026 13:10

Because…..personal taste?

Because they are so sparkly 😍😍😍

I’m not married or engaged, here’s hoping “my husband is coming”!

Where the hell is he?

Squirrelchops1 · 09/01/2026 13:29

The size of carat you're talking about to be classed as a 'big' diamond is going to be way above what the majority of people can afford, unless they're lab grown or something not diamond.
A 2carat emerald cut, d rating..so pure white is over £30k on samara james jewellers for example (pre discount) with discount is £18k.

Bababear987 · 09/01/2026 13:39

Why wouldnt you want a massive gorgeous sparkly diamond?

Why wouldnt you want a massive gorgeous sparkly diamond?

Why would I want one?

They don't give me joy and I don't wear rings other than my plain gold band wedding ring. The same as a handbag costing £2k wouldn't give me any more joy than a handbag costing £100.

I don't criticise other people for enjoying their rings and bags though.

We are all different.

sandwichparty · 09/01/2026 13:55

Personally, every engagement ring I have seen has looked utterly generic and boring. They all have the same small modest diamond set in a white gold band..

Obviously nothing wrong with that if you love it but they all look EXACTLY the same. Its bizarre.

I would far rather have something a bit more unique and different as mine is than wear what every other person is wearing

Grammarninja · 09/01/2026 14:06

I don't think it is. These days you can get enormous diamonds for very little. The bigger the diamond, the lesser the quality, I usually assume unless the person is very, very well off. I think it just comes down to preference really.
I have a 1.6 carat diamond in my engagement ring. It cost €33,000 but is probably the smallest diamond I see these days. It's as big as I wanted but I've seen several women in mums' classes who have diamonds 3x the size. Unless they're millionaires, which I doubt, they were just happier with a bigger stone and were happy to overlook quality. Each to their own, I say!

What, every single one you have seen in your entire life? I can only think of one person I know who has that type of ring (although hers is yellow gold), there is a huge variety of designs, metals, stones, amongst my friends and family. I love looking at other people's rings.

Yep- every single one. I would say at least 8 people

How big are we talking? Elizabeth Taylor size or just bigger than yours?

Edited

😂
Perfect summary.

I agree. For me, it’s about the rainbow of colours that it emanates.
A big diamond without that inner radiance is meaningless to me.
It’s all about the 4 C’s.

I have two diamond halo gemstone rings which radiate a myriad of colours, even in dim lighting.

AddictedToBooks · 09/01/2026 16:25

worstnotholiday · 09/01/2026 01:36

They aren’t for me. So I have an alternate antique amethyst. (Also- massive diamond is probably outside of my comfort price. Anything that costs more than a deposit on a good house is not what I’d spend that money on)

However. Surely cheap is not a descriptive that suits a big diamond?!?! That’s nonsense. They are, like a Rolex, a significant indicator of riches. Tacky? Maybe dependent upon taste. Ugly? Again an unusual stance but one which is based upon personal taste.

Id also wonder how many “massive” stones you are seeing op? Obviously I run in less well to do circles than you- but I have seen a handful of massive diamonds in my life. Lots of diamonds. Lovely Hugh carat ones. Often very similar and yes not exactly unique. Lots of big stones. MASSIVE stones? Very few.

I absolutely love Amethyst - one of my favourite stones. I got a fairly small diamond and sapphire engagement ring (still wear it and still love it) but if I were to choose a replacement, I'd definitely consider Amethyst or Peridot.

Yeah, it's the way it plays with light for me too. So pretty. I'm the same with Christmas decorations!
I've seen some very big ones about that are like chunks of glass. I just can't see the attraction but then again, I've grown up with certain mantras like:
There's no need to guild a lily
Less is more
Buy well buy once
so the emphasis has always been on quality and not what others may think.

PeachBlossom1234 · 09/01/2026 17:09

I do love diamonds but I’m not a huge jewellery wearer….i am currently coveting a diamond watch though…..

Pepperz · 09/01/2026 17:55

I’m a casual dresser and only wear a watch and one ring. They both have diamonds and are v expensive (gifts). I’m not interested in any other jewellery. They are not ostentatious, very much classic. I doubt anyone would even think I’d own anything that expensive, I don’t care either way 😆

Chinsupmeloves · 09/01/2026 19:16

I didn't, far too impractical! Flat stones for me.

I am quite surprised you've only ever seen 8 people wearing engagement rings, I must have seen hundreds over the years and could tell you at least vaguely what most of my friends and relatives engagement rings look like which is way more than 8. But it's something that really interests me so I love looking at them and take more notice than some probably do.
