Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

Some women just like the look of them? I'm also guessing some women equate size of diamond to how much their fiancé "loves" them? Others like to say to other women "Look at how rich my fiancé is?" Perhaps it makes them feel validated?
Not for me but each to their own.
I didn't want a classic engagement ring when I got engaged because I didn't want to be like most other women in terms of style of "classic" ring.
Personal choice.

I agree. For me, it’s about the rainbow of colours that it emanates.
A big diamond without that inner radiance is meaningless to me.
It’s all about the 4 C’s.

I have two diamond halo gemstone rings which radiate a myriad of colours, even in dim lighting.

I agree. I said I wanted something 'really sparkly ' and wow. Partner bought me a round brilliant trilogy ring and it is so sparkly and clear it is almost too much! At times wished I'd gave gone for the square cut trilogy

I would love an art deco ruby and diamond ring. Or a moss agate.

People like different styles. Not sure what’s so confusing about that.

Same as the people who like certain clothes, cars, bags etc

Sounds like you just wanted a judgy thread tbh.

Branleuse · 10/01/2026 11:16

For so long historically, jewellery was the only thing that that a woman could actually own of any value. Weren't allowed to be homeowners etc. Expensive jewellery was a woman's security, so that's where it started, but conspicuous consumption has been a big thing for centuries now.

I wouldn't wear big flashy diamond jewellery, but I do like pretty things and jewellery and clothes, so I think its just personal taste

Mithral · 10/01/2026 11:38

I love all sorts of gemstones more in a geeky geology way than in jewellery really.

I have a cabochon sapphire with natural asterism that I adore but it looks like a moonstone to most people. So rubbish for looking wealthy but it gives me a thrill

Jewels are the biggest con going, the mark up is crazy.

Brightlittlecanary · 10/01/2026 13:04

Ha someone you know got one, you sound so jealous. They clearly don’t look cheap.

ive noticed people do this when jealous they put the thing down they want.

EnchantedDays · 09/01/2026 19:21

I am quite surprised you've only ever seen 8 people wearing engagement rings, I must have seen hundreds over the years and could tell you at least vaguely what most of my friends and relatives engagement rings look like which is way more than 8. But it's something that really interests me so I love looking at them and take more notice than some probably do.

Me too, I raised an eye brow at this. I can’t work out how someone has only ever seen about 8 engagement rings unless house bound.

Mrsnothingthanks · 10/01/2026 13:10

@Brightlittlecanary I wonder if she means the "classic" style of engagement ring as in a solitare (with variations). I do agree that sort of style is most women I know opt for. Not for me, but most of the women I know do have engagement rings around that sort of style.

Yawn

Why do people trot out this trope every time someone says they dislike something?

I'm just not a ring fan, and think that rings with large stones in them look ostentatious. I would never say anything to the wearer, but I am really, genuinely not jealous of someone who has a ring like this. I dislike flashy watches as well, but again I'm not jealous. They just aren't my cup of tea.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 11/01/2026 17:42

My neice has a beautiful ring with 3 huge diamonds . I absolutely love it and am thrilled for her she has such a gorgeous engagement ring .
It's personal choice when all is said and done.

SpringIsComingSoonFolks · 11/01/2026 17:46

Because they rock! 💍

nondrinker1985 · 11/01/2026 17:57

I have a stunning (D, flawless, 1ct) diamond, it’s my engagement ring. Whole carats are actually more expensive than a 0.9 or 1.1. I just love it, it brings me joy cos it’s beautiful. I stand in a lift let’s say and it catches the light and it’s just so special

Mithral · 11/01/2026 18:02

I have never heard of a 1 carat being worth more than a larger diamond - I really don't think you're right there.

She said it’s d, that’s incredibly rare. So it wouldn’t be more valuable that a 1.1 d but would be more valuable than a 1.1 of lesser clarity, they are very rare though,

Yes obviously but she said whole carats are worth more than a 1.1 - nothing to do with quality.

nondrinker1985 · 11/01/2026 19:00

I buy from an experienced diamond dealer he said it’s called a magic number

So assuming equal quality, you're saying the bigger diamond is worth less? As I said I've never heard of that. Why would anyone cut a 1.1? How much bigger does it have to be before it's worth more?

Mithral · 11/01/2026 19:18

Should say Ive been shopping for a special stone so been looking at a lot!

Because different people like different things. My ring is made with dinosaur bone and I'm sure there's plenty of people who would think that is tacky and gross but I don't care, my finger my rules.

I love this.
I've just googled dinosaur engagement ring and sent my ds a link. He and his girlfriend are studying paleontology. You never know 😆

Hoolahoophop · 12/01/2026 09:02

@Mithral I googled your stone. Very pretty. I like unusual and very personal choices, also loving @HoseGoblin dinosaur bone.

I found a dinosaur bone on a walk along the beach some time ago, I keep thinking it would be nice to make it into a piece of jewelry.

I wouldn't notice. I don't look at people's hands that much. I'm more likely to notice their shoes. I notice people's trainers

Same here. I think people tend to notice things they are interested in. I'm not interested in rings so I don't notice whether someone has an engagement ring or not or what it looks like. I'm the same with handbags.

I notice rings/jewellery, bags, shoes, unusual tights and eyelashes 🤣 (not fake ones)
