Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

Mine is set between two skulls 😁 so likely we don’t share tastes but c’mon….people like shiny expensive things, this is not news!

notnow29 · 09/01/2026 08:08

It's like anything surely?

Some people love jewellery, some people love clothes, some people love perfume and some people (like me) aren't interested in any of that. My engagement ring cost £125 - but we on safari for out honeymoon and spent a fortune on that.

I love travel and gardening and that's where I'd spend my money, but other people don't have any interest in those.

HeddaGarbled · 09/01/2026 01:00

Because they’re magically beautiful: the way the facets catch the light and reflect colours. Everyone, everywhere values diamonds - that’s why they’re worth so much.

You’d love one too really, wouldn’t you? It’s OK: you don’t have to pretend because you think it’s cool to pretend you don’t.

This just isn’t true. I don’t value them and wouldn’t be spending money on diamonds - but I don’t really have any particular opinion on those who do value them.

They also weren’t that valuable or desirable until a very successful De Beers marketing campaign. They’re not inherently valuable - they sell for an average of less than $150 per carat out of Botswana. It’s closer to $2,000 per carat here, even for low end diamonds.

People like them? Mine is smaller and better quality but for others size matters

YellowPixie · 09/01/2026 08:14

So that people notice the size of it.

FrostyFlo · 09/01/2026 08:16

You might like pink shoes , I don't . It's called personal choice. We all have one .

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 09/01/2026 08:20

It's not really the size for me, it's the cut and setting. I love radiant and princess cut diamonds. I'm perfectly happy with lab diamonds.

highlandharpy · 09/01/2026 08:22

I think times are changing. Previously, big showy diamonds would be assumed to be costume jewellery.

Now, with the lab grown diamonds, which are very affordable, people can afford to go bigger. I think it will become the norm.

DancingNotDrowning · 09/01/2026 08:23

Depends what you mean by big?

I was given my 2ct asscher diamond 25 yrs ago and at the time it seemed enormous. I’m a total magpie and I wanted something beautiful and sparkly and it fit the bill. Now, it barely gets a look in as tastes change.

for me personally there’s a tipping point at which they become too ostentatious/impractical. Not sure when exactly but there’s nothing I like about Lauren Bezos’ ring for example.

I have an aquamarine which is 17ct and I couldn’t wear that every day, it’s massively impractical.

I don't think the OP sounds jealous. I don't like rings with big flashy stones in either. I think they look cheap.

Mind you, I'm not a ring person. When DH and I decided to get married I told him I didn't want an engagement ring.

There is nothing cheap about a diamond that radiates fiery rainbows.

However, I respect your opinion about not wanting or liking engagement rings etc.

I think it’s more the brilliance and refraction of light that people prefer.
A large well-cut diamond radiates rainbows from within.

i know someone with a massive lab-grown diamond but it has no brilliance at all. It’s just sparkly glass.

it’s pretty and she’s happy with it so all good.
(I’d rather have spent the same amount of money on a smaller, more brilliant diamond, tbh)

I get what you’re saying, though.

You have to admire De Beers for their determination 🤣

How big are we talking? Elizabeth Taylor size or just bigger than yours?

Edited

That has made me laugh!

ghostofchristmaspasta · 09/01/2026 08:37

An off the shelf, silver band, large diamond ring? No thanks.

A vintage ring featuring an oversized diamond? Yesss.

Theseventhmagpie · 09/01/2026 08:40

I have small hands and a size J ring finger but I adore large diamond rings and IMO they look great and frankly it’s only my opinion I care about.
The thing is the era of large diamonds as a status symbol are gone now.Lab grown diamonds are impossible to tell apart from the real thing if placed in expensive settings ( without specialist equipment) and most people also can’t distinguish diamonds from good quality Moissanite.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 09/01/2026 00:46

Is it a showy status thing

It’s so they have something to sell when they get divorced.

i give you Marilyn Monroe.

The French are glad to die for love
They delight in fighting duels
But I prefer a man who lives
And gives expensive jewels
A kiss on the hand
May be quite continental
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
A kiss may be grand
But it won't pay the rental
On your humble flat
Or help you at the automat
Men grow cold
As girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end
But square-cut or pear-shaped
These rocks don't lose their shape
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
Tiffany's
Cartier
Black Starr
Frost Gorham
Talk to me Harry Winston
Tell me all about it
There may come a time
When a lass needs a lawyer
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
There may come a time
When a hard-boiled employer
Thinks you're awful nice
But get that ice or else no dice
He's your guy
When stocks are high
But beware when they start to descend
It's then that those louses
Go back to their spouses
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
I've heard of affairs
That are strictly platonic
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
And I think affairs
That you must keep liaisonic
Are better bets
If little pets get big baguettes
Time rolls on
And youth is gone
And you can't straighten up when you bend
But stiff back
Or stiff knees
You stand straight at Tiffany's
Diamonds
Diamonds
I don't mean rhinestones
But diamonds are a girl's best
Best friend

I have worn my engagement ring every single day and night since getting engaged 30 years, ago. It"s got 3 small diamonds nearly flat set in the band. If i had a big gem sticking up from my finger I'd be scared to wear it as it would catch on things, all the time. It's about meaning for me not something I can only wear once in a blue moon.

Holidaytrees · 09/01/2026 08:46

I don’t have an engagement ring. I’m not a huge fan as I think it’s a market targeting at women and I don’t like that men

My ex husband bought me a large grey diamond (2 carats) pear shaped and I loved it and still have it - it just was something I had never seen before and I won’t see it again it was about 20 K back in the day (20 years ago) I love it. My fingers are slim and it just really was unique.

My MIL has a stunning rectangular huge emerald with two rectangular diamonds either side. She wore it once and I thought wow it just really suited her and the emerald was just lovely.

Like this one attached but diamond slightly bigger and it just suited her hand and I hope brings her happy memories.

Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?
HopSpringsEternal · 09/01/2026 08:47

I'm with you OP I totally fail to understand the interest in sparkly things or why women are expected to like them more than men.
See also fancy handbags, sunglasses, designer clothes. I am dull and practical and even though I could have afforded these things I wouldn't be interested in getting them. I am however very happy to spend my money on endless trips and holidays so feel free to still give me a raise dear boss.
Different strokes...

SmileyMoonset · 09/01/2026 08:48

I think starting snarky posts about other people’s personal tastes is unnecessarily churlish, but happily we are free to make individual decisions as we see fit.

I can see that you’d care about your own ring, it is absolutely beyond me why you’d care about anyone else’s.

Don’t judge people by your standards.

Imgoingtobefree · 09/01/2026 08:56

I hardly ever wear jewellery, but I once went to a very grand sit down dinner, and there was a woman there whose ring just happened to catch the light from where I was sitting. I was fascinated.

So the next day I went out and got myself the blingist ring - from Claire’s Accessories. Ooh I do like a good sparkle!

Everybody’s different, and it would be awful if we all liked exactly the same thing. But we are also ‘tribal’, so we need to find things that we can ‘other’ other people. We all do it! It’s just human nature.
