Why do people want big, huge diamond rings?

I think these massive stones look so ugly and cheap.

Someone posted a large diamond ring the other day. She had lovely hands and nails and it looked gorgeous. I mean, why do people do anything? Because they want to?

Isthisfunyet · 09/01/2026 03:43

I think because lab grown diamonds have made them inexpensive now as have moissanites that look like diamonds. They are pretty and sparkly 😁

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 09/01/2026 03:43

Our local jeweller is retiring. His closing sale has 70% off everything. There are some right bargains to be had.

I don't have one (mine is a 1ct stone) but by golly by geez by jingo I wanted one! A 1.5 - 2ct solitaire. Why? Showy. Ostentatious. Idk...I just always wanted a ring that entered the room before I did. Full disclosure; I absolutely LOVE jewellery & have invested in many expensive, beautiful pieces. I just like shiny things lol.

OtterlyAstounding · 09/01/2026 04:02

I don’t!

As Anne Shirley says, 'Long ago, before I had ever seen a diamond, I read about them and I tried to imagine what they would be like. [...] When I saw a real diamond in a lady's ring one day I was so disappointed I cried. Of course, it was very lovely but it wasn't my idea of a diamond.'

Diamonds are just too plain for me, and if I had to have a clear stone, I'd prefer moissanite.

I love darker coloured precious and semiprecious stones, pearls, and for the band, classic yellow gold. I also like interesting materials like wood, meteorite, or bone – or vintage rings. And I'd be more likely to boast about a beautiful ring being a steal at £150 than about it costing £4000. I love a bargain!

Splat92 · 09/01/2026 04:25

I'm not a fan of them myself, but I'm not that into jewellery in general. My engagement ring is 0.5 carats and I wouldn't want anything bigger.

LightDrizzle · 09/01/2026 04:34

Because you can really appreciate the faceting and they give discernible prismatic flashes or fire. Small diamonds if well cut are brilliant and will be bright and scintillate but larger stones show off the cut and fire better.

Also, and lots of people may not agree, I think a trilogy, cluster, larger halo or larger solitaire is more forgiving to knobbly or less than perfect hands than a fine, small solitaire.

Setting plays a huge part in how “doorknobby” a solitaire looks. A high Tiffany style setting often makes the stone look larger but is more likely to catch on things, a low cathedral setting that has shoulders leading from the shank to a girdle near the prongs helps things glide over the head and it looks less protuberant.

I’m not sure what you class as “huge”; a two carat well cut round brilliant only has a diameter of just over 8mm so it is quite neat. I think there’s a lot of inverse snobbery about rings. Some people drive Range Rovers presumably because that’s their thing, others like gemstones. Most children are attracted to sparkle. Some of us never grow out if it.

To match their big huge heads?

I'll have to admit to being a fan of big diamonds. Yes I'm a big headed show off.

LightDrizzle · 09/01/2026 05:01

Just to add as to practically, a plain (no pavé diamonds) low cathedral set diamond solitaire is pretty much bombproof . Particularly if it is platinum, as mine is, as you don’t even lose metal, it just moves around and can be polished up as needed any time you want. It’s also very strong. I wear mine all day everyday and in bed most nights. It doesn’t catch on anything. It only comes off if I’m gardening (sometimes, sometimes it stays on); kneading or shifting paving slabs or something like that. It gets a free annual prong check, polish and clean and this last service is the first time they’ve recommended the prongs have some attention. It’s been 11 years of hard wear. I am more careful with my 3rd generation diamond and sapphire trilogy ring and sapphires do scratch. I wear it almost every day but avoid gardening in it, unlike my mother 😂

piscofrisco · 09/01/2026 05:04

The only ostentatious thing I own is my huge diamond engagement ring. I love it. My first engagement ring was tiny and came from Argos Elizabeth duke. It’s lovely to have a ring that I get so much happiness from wearing.

DarkForces · 09/01/2026 05:11

Different people like different things. I'm sure most people wouldn't want my engagement ring and I've never seen anyone choose anything similar or say they love it, but I do and I'm the only one that counts in this choice!

canuckup · 09/01/2026 02:47

I just cannot get past the human price of it all

They will often be lab grown, not many people can afford to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on a huge natural diamond ring.

TryingtryingTryingfivetimes · 09/01/2026 06:47

I like shiny things.Gold is my preferred shing thing

HoratioBum · 09/01/2026 03:09

No problem with them personally but I do think really huge ones just look like costume jewellery and therefore defeat the purpose as I imagine that most people assume it’s a zirconia rather than something that cost tens of thousands of pounds.

A real diamond has a myriad of rainbow brilliance that a cubic zirconia just doesn’t have.
I have nothing against cubic zirconia and I have some myself. It’s a lovely alternative.

But I can tell a real diamond by its internal “fire”.

I’m intrigued!
Can you post a photo or at least, describe it? Please.

Silvertulips · 09/01/2026 07:39

I would say it’s a sign of the times, younger people can’t afford homes so they spend their money elsewhere - and I don’t blame them.

Lab diamonds have made this affordable.

Look at all the ‘stars’ showing off their flashy rings. People copy.

boobot1 · 09/01/2026 07:43

Depends on the size of you hands really. It depends on the person, some will carry them off, others wont. For others they will simply be totally impractical. They are beautiful though.

HoseGoblin · 09/01/2026 01:36

Because different people like different things. My ring is made with dinosaur bone and I'm sure there's plenty of people who would think that is tacky and gross but I don't care, my finger my rules.

I love the sound of a dinosaur bone ring!

Absolutely agree with you.
I’ve been lucky enough to buy a few stunning rings and I love nothing more than watching the sparkling, dancing brilliance.

They bring me a huge amount of pleasure and I love knowing that they will be passed on through generations of my family.

Diamonds are forever 😉

charlieandjenna · 09/01/2026 07:45

Each to their own. We all have different tastes and like what we like. There’s no harm in respecting people’s choices. I love a bit of sparkle

Haven't you learnt by now that people like different things to each other?

RampantIvy · 09/01/2026 07:48

Diamondsareforever72 · 09/01/2026 00:50

Sounds like you’re jealous.
I have quite a few very flashy diamond rings and I love the fiery rainbow brilliance of them.
I bought them myself.

I don't think the OP sounds jealous. I don't like rings with big flashy stones in either. I think they look cheap.

Mind you, I'm not a ring person. When DH and I decided to get married I told him I didn't want an engagement ring.

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 09/01/2026 07:50

Eggybreadwithnuts · 09/01/2026 00:46

Is it a showy status thing

It’s a ‘they can like what they like and wear what they want’ thing. Are you brand new to planet earth and humans? How has it passed you by that different people like different things?

user1476613140 · 09/01/2026 07:50

Completely impractical just like false nails that's why I wear neither!

It would get on my nerves especially when bleaching my toilet 🤪

SparklyGlitterballs · 09/01/2026 07:55

Real diamonds are beautiful but I'd be too scared to wear a ring with a real large diamond on it. I'd maybe put it on for special occasions but not the sort of thing you'd wear every day where I live - you'd get someone chopping your finger off to steal it!
