Hello!

New thread for when we are ready.

Happy New Year, Happy New Thread

Whether you want to do one extra thing a day while the kettle boils or a list helps with a kick up the bum to Get Things Done - all welcome.

Yikes @FurForksSake and @petalpower!

Our car is a very old diesel and due to be replaced soon. We are about to go looking at cars. Might have to speed that up! DH had a look under the bonnet but reckoned the mouse probably jumped out when I was driving. 🤔. The garage we use to service the car is just over the road. Might pop over and ask them to have a look tomorrow.

WinterFrogs · 13/01/2026 16:55

Nooooo! Mice in the engine? Do they not burn or get squashed? I even worry about the spiders in my wing mirrors when they unsuspectingly come out before I pick up speed, and the cling on for grim death till I slow for them to go back into their hideout.
I've been known to stop for them.

I must book a trip to the local tip. Our area has just started doing bookings which makes me sad as I used to be able to do a quick detour on my travels and it was never very busy.

I really want to sort out my patio area and think about outside seating for dry days.

We also have a gridlocked town due to roadworks and some closures. Nobody ever seems to join the dots here either.

Getting back into the routine of getting jobs done before breakfast so we are getting spruced up round the place again.

I can't keep up with everybody as gridlocked town means i was home later than anticipated so need to start dinner. Hugs to all ☕️ 🍰

FoolShapeHeart · 13/01/2026 19:32

I'm flagging on updating!

10/1 wiped down kitchen cabinet doors
11/1 helped MiniFool sort out toys and books to try and get a rotation going
12/1 cleared some damaged garden lights
13/1 pharmacy trip to get new meds for a relative and check for contraindications

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/01/2026 19:33

Peridot, you need to get your car towed away asap. 🐁

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/01/2026 19:49

Crivit, is the dye on your hands etc intentional?

crivit · 13/01/2026 22:05

@Mumtobabyhavoc No, not intentional 😬 Gloves were worn but I guess some dripped down into the gloves, as well as up my arms etc. Some successful removal so far but arms need further scrubbing. Good thing I like the colour (and that I usually wear long sleeves!)

Success on all things on my thread list today. Now to get used to having new bicycle brakes. My previous gentle stop pressure on the old ones now provides more of an emergency stop 🤣

Also I've happily not encountered any mice or ridiculous roadworks on my travels today, so feel like I'm winning.

WideOpenBeaches · 13/01/2026 22:47

I’m going away tomorrow for a few days so have been packing today.

However have emptied all bins, sorted out a Uniqlo return (have yet to physically enter PO to hand it over), done a quick shop for milk for when I come home, and made a call to a DA survivor who’s needing extra support. (I volunteer for a DA charity)

It all seems quite simple compared to some of your achievements!

WinterFrogs · 14/01/2026 08:05

Haveca nice time @WideOpenBeaches. Kudos to you for your volunteering 💕

No going over the handlebars @crivit!

Good jobs jobbed @FoolShapeHeart 😊

I am pleased with myself for pulling out and cleaning one of the fridge door shelves yesterday. And I'm getting back into the habit of checking rooms for things that don't belong in there, and putting them away. Beginning to feel a bit more in control again. Doesn't take long when the mindset is right.

SingleThreadJoiner2 · 14/01/2026 10:06

Good morning. Slightly losing track of the thread so consider this a general hello ☺️

Yesterday I returned two parcels through the post office. Very glad to have got it done. Laundry on this morning. Hoping H can go visit his parents later so he can take them all the things we brought back from their house and currently cluttering the front room...

FurForksSake · 14/01/2026 10:12

@WinterFrogs I’ve started never leaving a room empty handed and doing the scan. I think it’s helping. But there is a small pile on the stairs that has appeared from somewhere and the sofa is looking a little dishevelled.

I need to open a next parcel and sort out returns today.

WinterFrogs · 14/01/2026 11:19

@SingleThreadJoiner2 I feel your pain as every time I get properly decluttered, I end up with more of Other People's stuff. Offspring have most of theirs at their own homes now, but same as you, I have stuff going between mother's house and care home, or being got rid of, that ends up at mine for a while. I have her summer dresses hanging my wardrobe as space is tight at the home, but I don't want to take it back to her house as it'll add to the difficulties when it's time to clear it out. She has a lot of clothes, and although clean and tidy, it's become clear to me that she loves having Stuff. She grew up dirt poor, so I can understand why. She loves a good sort out too, and she's only happy when all her drawers are full to capacity, but knows where everything is. I've brought stuff in, which she doesn't need, specifically to fill the available spaces. Mainly to keep her amused rearranging it all.

@FurForksSake did you see the falling down the stairs thread? Get everything off them pronto!! It makes for terrifying reading.

In my work in people's homes, I was astonished at how many people stack their stairs All The Way Up! With just a narrow walkway. Terrifying ( but also really irritating if I'm honest, especially if I was expected to do housework) I was a carer, but there was often housework involved as it was a private company. Personal care never bothered me, but cleaning round hoards nearly drove me round the bend!

Sorry, a rant 😂

I'm having a very lazy day today as I'm not feeling 100% so I have delegated all my responsibilities 🙃

SydneyCarton · 14/01/2026 11:48

@WinterFrogs What is it about spiders and wing mirrors? We have a giant one living in ours although I think the frost has seen it off. We have two tips in our borough but one is closed for refurbishment (the mind boggles as to what this might entail) so the remaining one has to be booked. It is actually quite efficient as you are not consequently stuck in a massive queue behind someone getting rid of three lampshades when you have a giant dead Christmas tree taking up the back seat.

The falling-down-stairs thread was terrifying and I am glad for once to live in a flat

WinterFrogs · 14/01/2026 14:36

@SydneyCarton perhaps wing mirrors are the abode of choice for the more adventurous spider that loves to travel!

Our local tip was refurbished and they did manage to improve the parking

FurForksSake · 14/01/2026 14:49

I have filled the bird feeders. That was my project for the day. I have not unpacked or packaged up my next returns.

SunnyViper · 14/01/2026 15:03

My day has mostly been errands so far. Slightly annoying as an HGV blocked the top of my road so I had to drive out of the bottom of the valley adding quite a bit of time. Luckily it was gone when I returned.

@SydneyCarton one of my visits was to the tip and I timed it well as I drove straight in but when I came out the queue was well up the road. I wish ours would do bookings as the tailback can be quite significant and it ends up blocking a roundabout and creates mayhem.

Daily Project Round 9
RunningKatie · 14/01/2026 16:58

How is it Wednesday already?!
House was surface cleaned by cleaner - just the one kitchen @WinterFrogs !
I've been making a conscious effort not to sit in a morning till I've done a bit of tidying, can't quite tell if it's working.
Got to return the M&S tops I picked up, they are paper thin, no use for a northern winter! I fear I need to venture into real shops to feel the fabric. I also fear I'm turning into my mother.
Got some sandwich generation stuff coming up, mum has 2 ops in a city 2 hrs from my palatial mansion. Seems like I'm the taxi despite having a sibling much closer to her and the hospital sigh I'm not even the favourite child!

SpringingIntoSummerLobelia · 14/01/2026 17:12

You'd be my favourite @RunningKatie Smile

Great pic @SunnyViper ! Gorgeous sky!

Very tired here today and I had a nap. I turned the electric blanket on and woke up half an hour ago to find our very nervy tabby cat who eschews human contact snoring gently in the crook of my knees.

Sorted out dates for my and Dcs trip to Australia this (our) summer. Planning a road trip up north and my mother will join us. My father (who also eschews human contact) said he'd stay home and check in daily to see if we managed to find a place to stay and to let us know what he has been watching on netflix. Grin. My mother will be thrilled to be with her GCs (and maybe to a lesser extent me) and DFather will be thrilled to hear about it in absentia and will enjoy seeing photos sent via text plus a roundup when we get back.

So a good day in short!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/01/2026 18:30

Katie, do I sense an AIBU thread on your horizon? I'd still like to call you Kitchens. It's such a good moniker! 😁
Lobelia, your trip sounds great! I absolutely loved the time I spent Down Under. Loved. It.

I have a rash on my arm. It's a bit itchy. I took a pic in case I want to check if it progresses. I also took an anti histamine. It might be dry skin or dermatitis. I used to have a sensitivity to eating grains and would get a rash/hives, so I wonder if could be that returning. It hasn't been a significant concern for a long time, though.

petalpower · 14/01/2026 20:04

Very cold and frosty here today!
Saw my lovely friend for lunch - she works in a charity shop and is always happy to take donations so I took a bag of things with me. Stopped at the textile recycling bank on the way and dropped of two pairs of trainers, an old dog blanket and towel and another couple of bits. Picked my car up from the body shop (via convoluted journey due to road closures still being in place) and dropped it back at our local garage to look at the brake problem. Had a big sort out in the dog cupboard - was brave and threw out Senior Petaldog’s brush and old collar (although I did keep her lead and most recent collar).
Hope everyone has had a good day!

WinterFrogs · 14/01/2026 20:32

It's because you're not the favourite that you get the privilege of doing the parental grunt work @RunningKatie No need to ask me how I know! I concur with @SpringingIntoSummerLobelia. You can be our favourite 💐

Babysteps @FurForksSake This us why it's daily ProjecT. Though some posters ( rarely me) get more done. I have to do things in stages. Especially things like parcels.

That's a big old lorry @SunnyViper! We had queues for one of the local tips and I think that's why they started it. The other one was lovely. I just need to see how straightforward booking it is, and as per what I said above, it'll happen in stages 🙈

I love the affectionate way you talk about your family @SpringingIntoSummerLobelia ❤️

Where is our @mumofoneAloneandwell I wonder. Hope everything is ok!

Bugger to the rash @Mumtobabyhavoc Hope you get to the bottom of it 🙏

I've achieved quite a lot of delegating today, and dealt with emails. I've also washed, dried and put away a load of laundry despite not feeling 100% so I am happy with that.

BerfyTigot · 14/01/2026 20:34

Hello! I've been on this thread in the past but tend to get overwhelmed and give up.

So I'm not going to claim to be the most consistent poster but I do want somewhere to post about the tasks I've completed. (I have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis so get tired easily).

Anyway, I have a bag of books to go to charity book stall and 2 bags for the charity shop. If i manage to do them both tomorrow, I'll consider that a great day! Have to phone charity shop first to see if they're taking donations.

WinterFrogs · 14/01/2026 20:40

Hello @BerfyTigot and welcome back! Sorry to hear about the fibro and RA. That does make life hard 💐

SpringingIntoSummerLobelia · 14/01/2026 20:41

Snap on fibro and RA @BerfyTigot !

This is a lovely thread where no-one pressures us to achieve more than we can manage. Smile

You are very welcome!!

BerfyTigot · 15/01/2026 10:21

Thanks for the welcome! I woke up this morning feeling energetic (!) so called the charity shop and popped round with the bags of stuff. So pleased to get rid.

That's today's task done so I can rest now.

Peridot1 · 15/01/2026 10:41

Hello all.

Welcome back @BerfyTigot. Well done on getting rid of the charity bags. It always feels like such a weight off for me.

Well. Mouse-gate. I called the garage and they say mice can cause a lot of damage. And can chew through anything and end up in the main part of the car. 😱😩. But they can’t look at it until next Wednesday. Aargh. I really don’t want to drive it. DH is not being overly sympathetic. Says he is not being a taxi driver and pointing out the garage might not find anything. He would have to taxi driver me around in DS’s car as I’m not getting into ours! DS’s car is a manual and I haven’t driven a manual for over 25 years. I have to go to the gym and the dentist tomorrow too.

Anyway. Cleaner was here yesterday so bathrooms are done. And I tidied DS’s bedroom. And did a few loads of laundry and all the towels. Then I vacuumed my bedroom which I am gradually tidying. One more corner to tackle so will do that today. I do need to move the bed but need help. Might try to do that over the weekend.

Today:

  • need to do dishwasher and kitchen
  • move a few things from landing down to hallway so they can be moved to the new gym (the garden room now has a treadmill in it so is officially a gym!)
  • tidy the living room - we redecorated it last year and it’s not quite right but it’s mainly furniture and positioning and removing things that are making it look cluttered. I used ChatGPT yesterday for some ideas so wanting to get on with that. DH is not necessarily in agreement.
  • bits of laundry

Today’s “shitty job” will be scrubbing around the plug hole and overflow hole in the sink in the downstairs bathroom which are grubby although the sink is cleaned a few times a week.

Have a great day all.
