A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Ooh, and Thread 25 on the horizon….

justasking111 · 13/01/2026 19:26

Starmer aping Wales why? Our nutty ideas haven't worked. The only good one we came up with was banning single use carrier bags.

justasking111 · 13/01/2026 19:28

Well I've just read about the 26 year old who's to be hanged in the morning four days after his arrest for attending a protest. The agony of his family.

I bring good tidings my friends - I have just read an excellent, and damning piece re Starmer in the FT.

Here’s the first section.

Wes Streeting, health secretary and a potential Labour leadership contender, has attacked an “excuses culture” at the heart of government, while another cabinet minister said there was a “50:50” chance Sir Keir Starmer could be toppled as UK prime minister by the end of the year. Streeting told a conference in London it was time ministers got a grip and stopped making mistakes, while Andy Burnham, Greater Manchester mayor and another potential leadership rival, used the event to set out elements of his own manifesto. The conference at the Institute for Government think-tank on Tuesday took place against a backdrop of speculation that Starmer could face a leadership challenge in 2026, with ministers frequently discussing how long he can survive. One cabinet minister said: “What’s happening at the moment is extraordinarily bad. We can’t just pretend otherwise.” Another cabinet member, when asked if Starmer would still be in Number 10 in December, replied: “50:50.” Starmer on Monday attempted to rally MPs, saying that this year would be one of “change and renewal”, and both he and chancellor Rachel Reeves argue that an improving UK economy will boost voters’ mood. But with dire poll ratings and a daunting set of elections to the Scottish and Welsh parliaments and English councils looming in May, the Labour Party is awash with talk of whether — or when — a coup against Starmer might materialise. Allies of Starmer are eyeing Streeting nervously, and the health secretary used his IfG speech to attack what he claimed was a view in government that the Whitehall machine was incapable of delivering change. “This excuses culture does the centre-left no favours,” he said. “If we tell the public that we can’t make anything work, then why on earth would they vote to keep us in charge?”

No defence lawyer, no process. It's state murder.
2000 people estimated killed in 2 weeks, including children. Just for protesting.

Elsewhere

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is considering whether to join US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace for Gaza.
The new body is part of the White House's 20-point plan to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
It is expected to temporarily oversee the running of Gaza, manage its reconstruction, and be made up of world leaders.
UK diplomats are seeking more clarity from the US State Department on the role of the board and its members.

“Starmer abandons plans for compulsory digital ID”.

Thank goodness for that! I can't tell you what a relief that is. The UK has become such a dark place recently - with the government seeming to deliberately act against us. This feels like a glimmer of hope that the country I used to feel part of might come back.

Groan. We should just stay the fuck out of it. We can't afford it. We're not wanted. And anything we do there - no matter how well-meaning - will be thrown back in our faces, with demands for reparations.

Agree!!!
But has taken several attempts to quote this post.. hope MN is not censoring…

He should get his own house in order, first.

What does this have to do with us in the UK?
Sorry am I being thick?

I'd bet a lot of the role will involving lobbying for UK companies getting a share of the reconstruction work....

Just saw the headline about digital ID

It will be a temporary pause. good news nonetheless.
I'm surprised to see that though - something to do with the US, perhaps?

The brain works in funny ways. As soon as I saw that headline, I started hearing Taylor Swift "the smallest man who ever lived". I mean it's a great song, but it's interesting that it came into my head straight away...."were you writing a book? Were you a sleeper cell spy? In 50 years - will all this be declassified?" That pretty much shows how much I don't trust this government. It was the first thing that came out of my brain. I blame the gaslighting!

If it's the 13th U-turn, that makes me think even more - it can't be incompetence. The guessing game of incompetence or conspiracy is part of gaslighting in itself.

@LupaMoonhowl I can barely get MN to load, and quoted posts disappear. I don't think they're censoring.

@notimagain thank you so much for that explanation. The thing about who's picking up signal on the ground - yeah, that's a great point - I hadn't thought what an act of courage it is just to get connected!

perhaps it's not a bad time to become a bit irrelevant on the world stage. Much as I salute the bravery of the people, I often wish we could live a quiet life as an island nation!

And anything discussed will be leaked to god knows who. Sorry this government doesn't keep it's mouth shut. It's a security nightmare.

I'm not convinced it's even that. Since when did this Labour government do anything to help UK business?! They actively despise it.

I suspect it's more along the lines of the Labour MPs who used their influence to lobby for a new airport in Kashmir despite opposing the expansion of Heathrow on climate grounds.

EmeraldRoulette · 13/01/2026 22:29

@strawberrybubblegum what have I missed? Why does anyone here care about a new airport in Kashmir? Do they stand to make money out of it or something?

I am so tired of international business being more important to our MPs than UK business.

UK MPs should concern themselves with UK interests. That's their job. But clan relationships seem more important than British national interests for some (or even local interests - like bin strikes for a Birmingham MP).

Worryingly, those clan relationships also seem to be rapidly disrupting our political system, by actively coordinating block voting in accordance with group interests. We're in uncharted territory.

Ah, but when it comes to carbon emissions, Labour MPs are able to keep a laser focus on the UK!

Re Starmer’s latest u-turn - this time on his abominable digital id plan, here’s the top comment on the BBC.

It was based on a lie and that’s not a good place to start. It was nothing whatsoever to do with immigration control and the public saw through it from the beginning.

How much more bullshit must we suffer from this government? It’s a river of effluent.

Which phase are we on now btw?
Hopefully, the terminal phase.

RockaLock · 14/01/2026 07:08

The whole Chinese embassy makes zero sense to me.

One hand, the mobile phone networks were told to rip down all their Chinese masts and equipment and replace them due to the risk of China using them to spy on the UK.

And MI5 warned MPs not to have confidential conversations in Chinese-built EVs, again due to the risk of spying.

But on the other hand, this Chinese embassy sounds fine and not a risk at all?!?!

Make it make sense, please!
