A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Quentin Letts on the delayed local elections and the dire state of the Labour party.

Despite the bluster, they're in over their necks, running scared - and a perfect of example of why actions speak louder than words. Utter shambles.

www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-15354607/QUENTIN-LETTS-genius-Starmer-just-election-you-look-like-losing.html

Its good to hear that some Labour MPs are speaking out, not that Starmer cares. Let us know if there are any marches etc in your area. I'd be furious if this was happening on my patch.
Some of the comments in the DM rightly comparing this gov to a dictatorship, and references to Putin. I agree with them.

Labour changes mayoral vote system after Reform victories

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/0dabc5ae7e143c3f

More details, without the annoying voice - athough I quite like it 😁

Thanks.
I like JRM's voice too. I find it quite soothing 😂

JRM lost his seat to Dan Norris. People living in that area have had no representation in parliament since Norris was arrested. No by election either.
They should hold a by election so he can win it back.

This used to be my constituency and they redrew the boundaries and now have Wera Hobhouse.

@EmeraldRoulette I have been using a specific LLM a lot for code generation - I'm writing some stuff in a language I'm less familiar with so that's been a huge time saver and accuracy improver.
That said, I do think there's going to be a huge amount of vibe coded AI slop out there as you can't blindly trust the models so if no-one's checking properly there's potential for total disaster.
I predict an initial huge downturn in programming jobs followed by a big upswing when they need people to actually unfuck things.
That being said, the LLMs will also keep getting better.

Was this after Dan Norris was arrested? I don't understand why they haven't held a by election.

Yes I think so. Dan Norris was also the Mayor for WECA. We had elections last year for his replacement and Helen Godwin won. Reform were close second though.

Catatemyhomework · 05/12/2025 10:42

So he was a mayor and an MP

Catatemyhomework · 05/12/2025 10:43

I was talking to my sister yesterday and she has friends who run small businesses. One of them owns a gym and he has said he will have to shut down as business costs are too high now and he has to find an extra 14k a year. Another owns a small brewery and he said he'll give it until April but will likely have to close. They are all naturally very distressed about losing the livelihoods they've worked so hard to build. They hate this government.

I know a few people who've started asking for cash again. The ATMs are going to be busier. There'll be more mobile businesses setting up to too suspect.

One said she'd halved her client list because of the tax implications. Was working less hours and had less stress.

Catatemyhomework · 05/12/2025 10:45

Anyway we are now part of Bath constituency. Used to be North East Somerset.

Thats the bit I don't get. Is the mayoralty linked to the constituency seat there? Ie, a single vote counts for both?

No, they are different elections. I've no idea how he got to be both. People weren't happy about it by all accounts as he was doing both badly and getting paid for both jobs.

Thanks.
I'll do some reading when I have time. I still don't understand how they've got away with not holding a by election in that constituency seat. Whatever has happened, it sounds dodgy AF.

Wouldn't it be good if on the next Question Time a Government Minister was ambushed by a dozen farmers about IHT. Oh, wait that's only appropriate to be done if we can ambush some one from Reform and by someone who 'does not speak' English reading from a prepared script. John Swinney has now said it is racist to suggest there is a problem when 33% of Glasgow do not speak English(Scottish) as their first language. I despair with the ever continuation of lunacy and intended destruction of the United Kingdom by those on the left.

Fauchon · 05/12/2025 12:08

Zia Yusuf was unbelievably rude and arrogant on QT last night.

SpaceRaccoon · 05/12/2025 12:15

I didn't watch Question Time - is it true they had on an illegal immigrant who said he couldn't be sent back as his child didn't speak Farsi, and said child was 4 months old?

redange · 05/12/2025 12:37

Yes, incredibly the BBC thinks an Illegal immigrant who was for good reason 'refused' Asylum in six countries has more Political capital than a Farmer with IHT issues.

Great post. We need to make decisions on objective facts.

Upstartled · 05/12/2025 12:38

I didn't see it @Fauchon I had a look for clips after you posted and landed on his comments about the trivial way that Labour are claiming to have a hand in the return of tens of thousands of illegal migrants when the number is just over 2000 (iirc) and the unfair impact illegal migration has on the population - including legal migrants.

Yusef does have a habit of talking over people though, which is quite rude and jarring. It's harder to stomach over a longer debate. But I think he does have a knack for clarifying the facts behind waffle that is useful.

I was wondering how advanced his baby must be if he thinks having a language is the norm at that age 😂

“Kemi Badenoch knows what she thinks. This, it turns out, makes her quite different from Sir Keir Starmer, whose beliefs crumble like sandcastles against the incoming tide. It gives her great encouragement to discover that the only thing which really upsets him is not some breach of principle or policy failure but his affront that she dares attack him. In an age when people resent any sense of entitlement, the white knight of human rights law is Exhibit A to be mocked.”

’Keminism’, love it!

Welsh farmers got truly fucked over on Tuesday when plaid backed labour. It is jaw dropping.

Upstartled · 05/12/2025 15:00

Yes, Kemi has really found her stride over the last month, or so and I am relieved that this progress is filtering through to the public. I know when she did her triggernometry interview, almost a year ago now, she talked about the Conservatives needing to sit back for a time, part in planning and part almost in penance for the electorate to begin to trust them again. It felt like a game of chicken and that at any point we might have Jennings, Philp of Cleverly make a bid for leadership, but I'm relieved that this is working now and hope it continues.

Has there been any more on that Chinese spying case and all the shenanigans about its collapse?
