Well, at least the darkest day is out of the way - I do hate this period of the year, sadly including Christmas. Last year was okay, I don't know if I'm going to get away with an okay Christmas this year! Two years of it being okay would be a bit too good to be true!
I've mentioned before that there was a period where I didn't really engage in politics or pay much attention
So what I picked up in that time is quite vague.
There was a journalist called Matthew Syed who I thought was left-wing. You know how social media means you occasionally catch a glimpse of something? - I caught a glimpse of a few things that suggested he was changing course. I finally got round to looking it up. He stood for election in 2001 as a labour candidate but feels that the current version is completely removed from what he was standing for.
This made me wonder even more if some people voted Labour expecting something like the last lot.
The other thing that I've vaguely picked up on over the years, was what I would call the long march. This was a book which I haven't read 😂 but the author, Marc Sidwell, was interviewed on Triggernometry a few years ago. NGL I didn't understand the whole interview. But I did pick up the left being "on the march" in a way that wasn't reflected in our election results at the time, but the author clearly felt that it was coming. He also works as a financial writer. I could see the the point he was making but again, it was just something I sort of skipped over in my brain.
I looked up the book now and I guess it didn't do well because it's not had any kind of reprint and it's very expensive. To be honest, I might struggle to read it anyway.
I'm not sure that more reading and listening around politics is going to do me any good. Occasionally, I think "I should read XYZ" but, no.... it's probably too depressing and we have no idea what's going to happen.
