Well, we played really well - no unforced errors!
Came away with a Gold Award which I’m well pleased with.
Now for a gin…

Result 😁. Congratulations.

PandoraSocks · 23/11/2025 16:29

Well done, @cardibach . Enjoy your gin!

Saucery · 23/11/2025 16:34

There's more Christian denominations than Church of England.
There are, but most of them don’t fit the bill for some halcyon days of English purity that Yaxley Lennon wants to weaponise against multiculturalism. C of E churches where the congregations are mainly White, older and small in number are ripe for colonisation by men who wouldn’t know the teachings of Jesus if He walked up and smacked them in the face with a Bible. The Church Of England has tried to be all things to all men for too long and the problem with having an open mind to that extent is that your brain is in danger of falling out. It’s a fractured, meaningless organisation. Let’s hope it doesn’t become the Religious Fervour Wing of this insidious new racism.

itsgettingweird · 23/11/2025 16:36

Well done cardi that definitely deserves a gin or 2!

Efacsen · 23/11/2025 16:38

Congratulations @cardibach well done

Spandauer · 23/11/2025 16:41

A good day's work @cardibach🏆 congrats to you and your fellow musicians.

InMySpareTime · 23/11/2025 16:45

Tommeh types wouldn’t get very far in my church, where immigrants and asylum seekers are given free lessons to improve their English, benefits advice, and where we celebrate the range of global cultural influences with things like an All Nations gospel choir.
I know about one Reformite in the congregation but he stays very quiet about his political leanings.

The pernicious racism of the Deep South had Christs everlasting seal of approval.

However, if you wanted to stir up a religious war - especially if the other side aren't interested - is to rouse your own "side". If Yaxley Lennon can pack the pews with the EDL faithful, then I can easily see Church Fetes having a raffle to mullah a muslim or something equally vile.

I mean if you are a Christian, Muslim or Jew then frankly you have already signalled you will believe in anything. And if you go down the "it's all a metaphor" line, then you will be told you aren't a true believer etc etc.

A plague on all their houses.

Will this be the post that breaks the camels back ?

Saucery · 23/11/2025 17:02

I honestly don’t believe Yaxley Lennox’s supporters have the self discipline for any kind of holy war. They have the ability to split communities and there could be pockets where Racist Church supersedes Messy Church, but Knights Templar they very much are not, whatever overinflated sense of self importance they may have while draped in a cheap polyester England flag.

Not a coincidence that a thread about Christian hymn singing has popped up today.

Not the case for all, but I can tell you are of the Sky Fairy persuasion, which you are perfectly entitled to be.
Personally, I’d like some C of E bigwigs to unequivocally tell them to do one.

Well done, @cardibach 💪🏻🍾

My woodwind days are a long way behind me. I remember a few incidents where I was shaking like a leaf which, unsurprisingly, made it really hard to play!

You definitely need to be in control of your nerves to play woodwind or brass. Nerves (and lungs) of steel. I rebrand nerves as excitement as my body is too stupid to know the difference.

Yes, I typed out several replies to some of that nonsense then sighed and thought what’s the point? It took MNHQ a couple of hours to delete a direct racist attack this morning - I’m starting to think they really don’t care much.

It’s a worry. The evangelicals have done that in the US, and I think some of those churches are vulnerable too.
One of my aunts was Elim Pentecostal (far reaches of Welsh non-conformism) and she had this phrase ‘I love him/her in Christ’ which meant she actually hated and looked down on him/her. I never met a less Christian woman in my life.

It's a nice follow up to the banning Christmas thread. The thread is just more thinly veiled anti immigration stuff, though the OP is denying it.

cardibach · 23/11/2025 17:14

How many ways can one veil anti-immigration feeling? We seem to be aim8ng to count the ways…

Some of the shite that is being posted at the moment is unreal. If you go by what is being said on MN, by Wednesday teatime we will have civil unrest due to Red Rachel's Communist/Marxist/Fabianist budget and the Government will be emptying cash machines to prevent a run on the pound.

Grin They are very inventive, I think they could work it into any subject they wanted. If they put that amount of effort into their local community projects (faith or otherwise, for the atheists among us Wink) what a better place it would be for everyone.

I can guarantee that if you take the "Scripture as metaphor" approach, you won't have to go far to find fellow "Christians" who would happily feed you to the lions long before they sought out satanists.

I mean transubstantiation - dare you question if you really are partaking of the flesh of Christ ?

I am afraid I don't need a magic book to tell me to be nice. And frankly the wonders of the Bible are positively pedestrian compared with the absolute staggeringly incomprehensible structure that is the universe we all inhabit.

People who claim public piety rarely are.

Deeds, not words.

It is moral action that defines character.

@SerendipityJane I’m afraid you’re talking to an absolutely unrattleable Christian here. I’m not going to rise to it. 30 years of living with a partner who can out-Dawkins Dawkins will do that to a woman. He can strip out a core argument of belief and wave it it around in the piercing light of science better than anyone in rl or online. I still believe so 🤷‍♀️.

In my last role one of the directors died suddenly (quite a shock) - I said "good night" as he left the office that evening) and his girlfriend chose to play a saxophone piece at his funeral (it was very much an evangelical West Indian event). Sadly ill advised - you can't do that an mourn.

I got about 5 minutes into the service and was blubbing like a baby. It bought back DMs funeral and there is a sense of peace in Churches that allows for such emotion.

I doubt that will happen in my town where the Vicar is a female and very inclusive of churches together and everyone together. Thanks be to their Goddess 😊

Frankly I'd rather listen to a nice bible story than Dawkins - he really could drive me to prayer.

Generally think, believe, what you will. Just don't start telling me how I "must" think this or do that because of it. That's when sparks may fly.

The current state of science is "we don't know". Which I find less terrifying than "we absolutely know".
