I'm Northern Irish, some here are Scottish and Welsh.

We're certainly not English.

derxa · 23/11/2025 02:27

Im not quite sure. I’m Scottish and would signal that on any post about nationality.

But the post is nothing to with nationality? It is not even mentioned. Unless you mean the nationality of the flags, which is likely to be Chinese.

Maybe you misread @DuncinToffee 's post.

Piggywaspushed · 23/11/2025 07:31

I always think people feel you have to be born in England specifically to be 'English' (not British) and then even English people might not consider many people English even if they were (for example, most EM people - see what happened when a trio of Black English lads messed up a bit in an England football tournament).

I was born in England but have never called myself English : I don't consider myself remotely English. No one English has ever called me English either except to wind me up. DH was born in England, too, but spent his whole childhood in South Wales. Never considered himself Welsh. I guess football teams made a big difference to him.

I am sure, however, that this entitles me according to Derxa Law to Have An Opinion. The flags were put up because of Little Englander anti immigration rhetoric. In Scotland, the wave of lamppost flags was copying the English movement. Normal non lamppost flag flying there (and maybe also in England although I am less convinced) is national pride. See also: Wales.

Well, there we have it. Open, targeted racism on Mumsnet. Sad

BIossomtoes · 23/11/2025 08:29

And on this thread, of all places. 😞

Saucery · 23/11/2025 08:33

Really hope MNHQ deal with it. I'm not against heated debates as you know, but singling out a poster on the basis of ethnicity as if that means they have no right to an opinion is low.

PandoraSocks · 23/11/2025 08:42

I am going to give @derxa the benefit of the doubt and assume she made a stupid and thoughtless post on the spur of the moment. Hopefully she will come back to explain herself and apologise to @DuncinToffee

If not, benefit of the doubt withdrawn.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/11/2025 08:47

Also baffled and deeply disappointed by the You’re not English comment.

Completely uncalled for.

Piggywaspushed · 23/11/2025 08:56

There's a very long running Trump thread on which the vast majority of posters are not American. Does that invalidate their discussion?

  1. Why does that matter?
  2. Many non-English people come under the 'white adult' bracket
  3. Why do you do this stuff?
derxa · 23/11/2025 09:48

DuncinToffee · 22/11/2025 23:39

Does that matter @derxa ?

Sorry I must’ve been having a mad moment. Apologies for any offence caused.

Palate cleansing change of topic. My band are performing at the National Concert Band Federation Regional Festival (Wales) today. We get an adjudication and a medal (we hope). Gradings from Platinum to Bronze are available. Bit on edge while eating my bacon sandwich…

Evenstar · 23/11/2025 10:36

Good luck @cardibach 💐
