A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thanks for the new thread @TheNuthatch - very appreciative of this thread and regular contributors!

They can't read the room.

They lack any insight in what will work and what not, and that's even before the backbenchers revolting.

redange · 17/11/2025 16:31

The answer is not to let them come in, rather than confiscating 'valuable' things though it does ask questions:

1 £1,000 and over is the equivalent of a UK person having a £20,000 Rolex Watch or 'Wedding Ring' with them, would we think in our country that person was destitute.
2: On arrival the Asylum Seekers apparently get a choice between a Apple I Phone don't know what Number or model or a similar Samsung how much maybe £500 which makes the whole confiscating proposal 'stupid' as well as potentially Amoral.
3: Would the valuable items be kept in lieu of return or granting of Asylum or conveniently taken and 'lost' unscrupulous and corrupt officials.

Friends family fled from Hungary in the 60s. Father was a jeweller. He brought gold and gems in. That helped the family set up, survive and thrive in the UK. They were never offered hotel accommodation though the church did help them find accommodation.

SpaceRaccoon · 17/11/2025 17:00

It's just the usual weird focus on random petty pointless details that won't raise a lot of money, instead of any sort of ability with big picture thinking.

SouthernAccents · 17/11/2025 17:02

Whoa - just caught up on the latest.

Migrant families whose asylum claims have been rejected will be deported if they refuse cash incentives to leave the UK under plans announced by Shabana Mahmood?

Sounds good to me.

None of this will happen of course.

All Labour are doing is alienating everybody - for very different reasons! Talk about identity crisis mixed with total ineptitude.

I’m wondering if twisty got banned. Hounded 👀 and reported too many times perhaps. :(

Anyway if you’re reading without a log in cos you’ve been banned, hello @twistyizzy .

SpaceRaccoon · 17/11/2025 17:07

I don't understand why we'd pay them cash incentives to leave at all if their claim has been rejected.

Why are they given phones?

I think they are less likely to scarper if they are expect a cash payout.

Fair.

Meanwhile, Labour continue to tear themselves apart over this.

Apparently, they throw their own phones into the sea before reaching our shores - but I have no idea why we give them phones.

Kemi says she will support govt’s immigration reform proposals (although has said she think they don’t go far enough).
i expect the govt will be needing her support, lots of crying and complaining from some Lab backbenchers as expected.

I hope Kemi plays this for all it is worth…

Go Kemi, go.

It’s a good opportunity for her. She can come across as sensible and rational while the Labour backbenchers revolt.

redange · 17/11/2025 18:00

Unlike the rest of the Labour Cabinet at least Shabana Massod actually comes across as competent .

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 17/11/2025 18:01

I honestly think that what Mahmood’s doing is much more immoral and distasteful than what the Tories planned with Rwanda (which wasn’t immoral at all anyway).

Labour never thinks anything through, it’s all about posturing, the backbenchers, Starmer’s survival and warm (but false) words on the TV sofas. Shambles.

CaveMum · 17/11/2025 18:15

Kemi should have backed the Welfare reform too, would have been worth it to see the Labour front bench tying themselves up in knots to distance themselves from the Tories whilst the back bench spontaneously combusted!

Same. An absolute shambles and dogs dinner of hideousness.

Kemi did offer to back welfare reform bill but Starmer declined the offer, suppose he thought it would be humiliating.

What’s immoral about what she’s proposing?

Shabana Mahmood plots illegal migration overhaul

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, is set to announce a series of new measures in the Commons today to combat illegal migration.

Well, at the risk of declaring a hole where my heart should be, I think all that laid out in the spectator seems fine 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m with @TheNuthatchand others. Have a selective entry system a deterrent and treat people normally when here.
