A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

This taking the migrants’ jewellery as a contribution towards their expenses is weird. Are they really arriving with tiaras and faberge eggs hidden in their life jackets?

TenLittleSweetWrappers · 17/11/2025 14:53

Hmm, and this is his Kent flagship Reform council are spending tax payers money…

“A Reform UK-run council has admitted it was an “error” to repaint road markings outside a school which closed nine years ago.
Kent County Council (KCC) said it was “sorry for any confusion” after repainting yellow zigzags and “School Keep Clear” warnings outside the former site of Halfway Houses Primary School in Sheerness.”

No they’re really not. They’ll have very little on arrival. Just clothes and a life jacket that’s about it.

Equally bizarre reading this morning that reforms will be looking to confiscate e-scooters and high spec cars from migrants, some of them who have been found using such vehicles whilst living in their temporary hotel accommodation!
Seriously?

DH has been suffering from insomnia for a fair few years now.

This morning I got up at 6 to come into the sitting room and he was watching the news where he had been for a a couple of hours. (He usually watches re-runs of The Big Bang Theory when he is up in the night). He said to me 'I'm really frightened for this budget'.

His hands were shaking. No joke. I just said; 'There is literally nothing we can do about it'.

Then I got the Dcs up, ironed their uniforms fed them and took them to school.

The jewellery confiscation thing has made some rebel MPs furious apparently and the Home Office has now had to backtrack “oh we didn’t mean wedding rings” etc. Worse and worse.

That daft jewellery comment may well have simply screwed Mahmood, despite her possibly having no part of it.

So what did they mean? What assets could they possibly confiscate, people arrive with nothing

MantleStatue · 17/11/2025 15:14

Confiscating jewellery from migrants

It's medieval.

And fuck me- if that's what this government is resorting to.

This is yet another example of governmental petty theft, and such a wholescale lack of morals and humanity. How the actual fuck did we get here?

I’ve no idea! I suppose some must wear or carry jewellery or it wouldn’t be a proposal but 🤷‍♀️

MantleStatue · 17/11/2025 15:16

Maybe they could remove gold fillings from teeth as well.

The Bolsheviks and the Nazis set a precedent after all.

They’re mostly men anyway so not much jewellery. And it’s easy for a trafficker to say hang on you might want to hide that they’ve got some new rules. Easy

I'm sorry to hear that. Its a horrible feeling. I hope he's feeling calmer now. Flowers
The worry and upset Labour have caused with the feckin budget will go down in history.

One thing that occurs to me.

It’s quite one thing to get policy past the back benches, quite another to implement it.

I am not confident on either, tbh.

Yep, agreed.
Its vile. I think one of the early Danish proposals was to remove personal items such as jewellery over a value of £1000. I'm not sure if the Danes adopted it.

Conveniently for Labour, Mahmood's statement to the house has been pushed back to 5pm at the earliest, as the speaker has allowed 3 urgent questions before hand. That may give MPs less time to let their feelings be known.

True.

Even if they struggle or fail to implement the proposals, their rhetoric will not be forgotten. As with the income tax u turn, the damage will already be done.

I honestly think "you will likely not be allowed to stay" would be a clearer deterrent. Hence the Rwanda plan, that Labour howled about, being more realistic than "watch and ring aff ye".

I can't get particularly worked up about it though, since it's clear that it will 100% not happen.

Edited

I'm on the same page.
I would rather refuse entry full stop than let them come, and treat them badly when they're here. I don't know what the answer is, but I have yet to hear anything I prefer over Rwanda.

Whatever the merits or demerits of Mahmood’s policies, the obvious truth is that everything this government does will now be ridiculed - from all political standpoints. This government’s an irredeemable, risible, hated mess.

That happened to the Tories. But only after many years, when it was exhausted and fractious, and with the constant encouragement of Labour and its cheerleaders.

Whoever said of Labour on the last thread ‘you reap, you sow’ hit the bullseye.

I'd go as far as pointing at the local employees of the council who will have given advice to the councillors as to what priority should be given in order to respond to their requests.

Most council workers are members of a union and have no reason to make Reform look good!

To screw over someone elected then you have to be an unelected paid advisor.

You can probably blame the civil service for the nonsense created by brexit negotiations. The CS do not support the British Public.

I'm so sorry to hear this Mantle. Everyone I know is on tenterhooks. I have 2 Mum friends who now have weekend jobs as they don't get the free nursery hours due to higher-rate tax paying husbands, and the salary left isn't going far enough.

It's rotten for retailers who will do huge amounts of their business over the next few weeks. Everyone I know is cutting back in anticipation...
