A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

This government have achieved the unthinkable - they are almost equally despised by everyone!

Way to go, Starmer.

EasternStandard · 17/11/2025 12:01

Haha love that one thanks @TheNuthatch!

CaveMum · 17/11/2025 12:03

Thanks for the new thread @TheNuthatch

Should we be keeping a tally on the U-Turns, Rebellions and Resignations/Sackings?

Oh look, that almost spells out USSR - how apt! 😜

<note for our observers - it’s a joke. I am in no way comparing the current incumbents to the regimes of the Soviet Union: just a touch of gallows humour to try and lighten the mood>

SpaceRaccoon · 17/11/2025 12:03

Thank you @TheNuthatch

One of the more popular reader posts on the Guardian.

Labour stood for election as a progressive centre-left party, but are governing as a right-wing white-nationalist party. The party briefings over the weekend were as brutal and racially inflammatory as anything we’ve heard since the days of Powell.

Last summer we were jailing people for racially incendiary comments, but today we have a Home Secretary fuelling hate by falsely claiming that we’ve “lost control of our borders” and that “immigration is tearing the country apart”. Add this to Starmer’s “country of strangers” speech and it’s clear that this government is as devoid of decency as it is of common sense.

People are crying out for structural fairness, affordable housing and the ability to pay their bills. All that Starmer offers is a message of racially divisive doom and a commitment to making the rich richer at the expense of ordinary people. This is an insane lose-lose strategy that guarantees Labour wipeout at the next election — the racists are never getting on board with this government but decent people are disgusted by the lurch to the nationalist right. Starmer has to go.

I’m not surprised at that. It’s very similar to the Labour MP earlier.

I’ve been following the story on Sheikh Hasina, who has been sentenced to death. She is the aunt of Tulip Siddiq, who resigned as Economic Secretary to the Treasury (but is still an MP) due to some fairly damning corruption allegations relating to her family in Bangladesh. This has to be embarrassing for the PM, she is still a Labour MP.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 17/11/2025 12:51

I can’t see the logic in Labour clinging to the ECHR (which, in the hands of the ECtHR, has created far bigger problems than just immigration) but enacting all sorts of harsh anti-asylum measures.

Why not withdraw from the ECHR, put domestic rights in place and rely on those and the common law?

Challenges to Mahmood will be inevitable under the ECHR and, most significantly, will drag on for years.

This is very confused government.

And is close to Starmer - literally as an MP and as a friend and Labour politician.

Today’s TRIM definitely worth a listen. Robert and Steph are both definitely in the “WTF are this lot doing?!” Camp!

A long(ish) read, but interesting. Reeves' appearance at her ill-judged pre-Budget speech was markedly different to confident, glossy image she displayed post-election in 2024. She's definitely had a few sleepless nights.

https://unherd.com/2025/11/rachel-reeves-has-a-confidence-problem/?set_edition=en&tl_inbound=1&tl_groups%5B0%5D=18743&tl_period_type=3&utm_source=UnHerd+Today&utm_campaign=a51b440c23-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2025_11_17_11_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_79fd0df946-a51b440c23-35175049

It’s difficult to feel any sympathy for Reeves, after the stress she has put people through, and continues to.

I cannot forget or forgive her smug demeanour when she entered government, nor her comments about people whining etc.

Reap and sow.

Milkshakes and migrant jewellery?

What the hell is going on?

Are these people ‘self-medicating’?

It’s bonkers isn’t it?

Starmer looks like he’s completely lost control.

The sadomasochist in me is now looking forward to the budget - I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Mind you, a day is a long time in politics with this lot, and we have over a week until then….

Madness isn’t it. I think they’ve lost the plot and can see them going under.

SpaceRaccoon · 17/11/2025 14:33

It's not even fun watching them make a total balls of it. It's a disaster for everyone, which is what's making me so angry. They must know they're completely incompetent?

SouthernAccents · 17/11/2025 14:46

Labour’s track record to date.

Chuck money at the public sector - no problem.
Impose higher taxes on the OAPs, farmers, PS parents, the middle class - no problem.

Try to reduce the welfare budget by a miniscule amount - BACKBENCH REBELLION!
Try to address illegal immigration - BACKBENCH REBELLION!

The UK is soooooo screwed.
