A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I’m with @TheNuthatchand others. Have a selective entry system a deterrent and treat people normally when here.

Of course. I think the hope is that this sort of thing Would be a deterrent 🤷‍♀️

I don’t think it will be.

Especially if there is talk of payment to leave, that’s a pull. Not sure if the work status changed maybe not as it hasn’t come up again on threads.

You need to be tough if a deterrent is wanted, grabbing assets whatever they are and 20 year waits are not it. It is awful for those trying to build a life though.

I think it is fine to consider asylum a safe harbour, not a permanent emmigration route.

Why doesn’t the government lower corporation tax like Ireland. They are now setting up a sovereign wealth fund.

from the bbc

Last year, Ireland raised €24bn (£20.32bn) in corporation tax, three times as much as the €8bn (£6.77bn) it took in just six years ago

Income taxes over the first six months of 2024 were almost €17bn (£14.4bn), up 7.5% on a year ago while VAT receipts, which reflects consumer spending, were up by 6.2%.

Multicoloured paper euro notes with 5, 50, 10 and 20 euro notes

Tax windfall continues for Irish economy - BBC News

The Irish government collected €12bn in corporation tax in the first half of 2024 - 15% more than in 2023.

The grabbing gold isn’t in her proposal. That’s bonkers obviously!! Not sure where that headline originated. Wouldn’t happen.

The 20yr wait thing is silly, wouldn’t happen.

The copying what Denmark have done - I’m all for it. It worked for them.

Why won’t the 20 year wait happen and what assets are being referred to?

I honestly think that what Mahmood’s doing is much more immoral and distasteful than what the Tories planned with Rwanda (which wasn’t immoral at all anyway).

Labour never thinks anything through, it’s all about posturing, the backbenchers, Starmer’s survival and warm (but false) words on the TV sofas. Shambles.

Agree.
What Labour are proposing is worse than anything even Reform have put forward.

I don't think it will have a deterrent effect either. They will still have a chance of remaining in the UK, even if it means being treated poorly for up to 20 years to achieve it.

Because gvts change… I thought you were referring to the taking jewellery nonsense!

What makes you think its nonsense that they would take jewellery?

I saw the minister's interview this morning. He said they wouldn't take heirloom jewellery, or a wedding ring, but I got the impression that other jewellery would be fair game under 'assets'.

I just didn’t see it in her proposal.. And also because it’s mental.

It’s worked in Denmark - better to follow an example that’s working than some half baked stuff that doesn’t work for anybody 🤷‍♀️

Let’s see. I think it is half baked.

Why would someone be put off by this? If asylum is given on persecution not related to war then that doesn’t change.

I've seen the examples of cars, rather than sentimental jewellery.

I think the jewellery thing seems to have crept in because it's part and parcel of the Denmark policy and questions have been asked if that will be part of our package too.

I don't know, a lot of this will be in the application.

I see the 'Clowns' from the Left: Whitmore, Burgon, Mcdonnell, Lewis, Maskell Creasey furious. An ex Supreme Court judge also saying no way can the plans happen due to the EHCR !

I wonder if, and I don't know because I'm a bit behind the ball on this and catching up late...if because lots of asylum claims are made as over stayers - rather than just people who have arrived by boats?

redange · 17/11/2025 19:31

Another Rebellion happening, can this Labour Government do anything that does not involve giving money away, or taxing non supporters ....

redange · 17/11/2025 19:32

ECHR !

Upstartled · 17/11/2025 19:40

Not much confidence in the general population that Starmer is going to make it through the next year.

The minister I saw this morning said that they wouldn't take a person's wedding ring, but if they arrived with a bag of rings, it would be fair game. I took from that that if a person arrived with a collection of jewellery it could be seized as an asset.

I don't like these proposals at all. We all have different views on this one it seems. Another one for the agree to disagree pile.

🤷‍♀️ it’s working for Denmark. ‘Denmark's immigration proposals, particularly its strict asylum and integration policies, have significantly reduced the number of asylum claims, reaching a 40-year low, and have led to the removal of a high percentage of rejected asylum seekers. The country's approach, which includes temporary protection status, strict family reunification rules, and a focus on rapid repatriation, has been effective in curbing illegal arrivals and is now being emulated by the UK government.’

Upstartled · 17/11/2025 19:45

Maybe. I feel like I'm not on solid ground with this one. I could be completely wrong - I'm not wedded to any bit of the argument yet. It all feels like noisy jazz hands to distract from the budget.
