Woolworths and Debenhams 😭

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/11/2025 13:43

We had a huge Woolworths in my nearest town when I moved there, and it morphed into a Wilco which was also good. Such a range of stuff I needed alongside stuff I didn’t know I needed. I mourn its demise!

@BettyfromBristol I liked Boswells although to be honest I only went there for the toy section - which was a Toymaster concession and they exist in other places so I am not being deprived of toys 😂
But the section with the posh soaps fascinated me - it was nice smelling and looked pretty.
I use to like it when Blackwells had the separate children's bookshop. It felt more special and they had drawings and work by local school children displayed on the walls plus art work by famous children book illustrators.

I miss Oasis for work clothes... the online stuff doesn't seem to be the same...

Same. I was a big fan of Oasis.

Sandinyourshoes · 16/11/2025 13:59

I miss the lovely cheesecake from BHS food court, which wasn’t smothered in gooey jam like so many others. There was also a deli in Lothian Road Edinburgh which also had a gorgeous homemade cheesecake to die for, but that was the 70s so long gone.

I miss Miss Selfridge in Hanover Street, although I’m way too old for it now. Debenhams, Gap, Past Times. Simply Silver in Inverness.

The hippie market at the bottom of Cockburn Street. Eastern Crafts Shop, I still have a pair of huge silver stud earrings from there.

The big music stores, Woolies music section. But I’ve run out of storage space for CDs or vinyl. Its downloads all the way.

You can still do that at HMV.

I worked at Our Price in the mid 90s for nearly 6 years. When I go in HMV, I still get a compulsion to tidy up the racking Grin.

I miss Wilko. It was such a useful shop. We have every other 'cheap' shop imaginable here, but I miss Wilko. The building sits there, empty, with all the signage still in place. And it makes me sad.

The Principles store and original concession in Debenhams

Past times was great

The Pier

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 16/11/2025 14:21

Definitely Debenhams.

Needmorelego · 16/11/2025 14:23

@Raahh I worked for John Menzies (the newsagents) for a few years back in the 90s. Messy magazine displays give me itchy fingers. Sometimes I want to take everything off the shelves and tidy them up. Supermarkets magazine displays make me sad 😂

OriginalUsername2 · 16/11/2025 14:24

Bakers Oven.

Littlewoods
BHS
Also a shame about Woolworths and Wilko.
Littlewoods - partly because of the cafe, the clothes weren't up to much but it was a main part of the town centre along with Marks & S.
BHS - also because of the cafe, the lighting department, and the range of clothes.
What do we have now? Out of town retail in tin sheds, where the owners are too tight to put the heating on. Usually if there is a cafe, it is Costa.

Kennedys. (This will mean nothing if you don't come from South-East London.)

Never found sausage rolls or steak pies anywhere near as good.

whimbrelcalling · 16/11/2025 14:32

@GiggorataI remember Boodle-am, loved it! Also Schofields, Lewis’s and a bit further afield, Brown, Muff’s and Busby’s in Bradford.

Raahh · 16/11/2025 14:32

Grin@Needmorelego DD2 hates going in HMV with me now, because I will take something back to it's rightful section Grin .

WhyKnotNow · 16/11/2025 14:35

Monsoon. Also East had an outlet in ourm local department stores and both closed. Really miss both of them. I know I can order both on line but inevitably I need to try two sizes and I hate the bother of posting back. Also it's just not the same as being able to take half a dozen into a changing g room and making a choice. I don't mind ordering on line when I can just return what I need to a local shop but now with Monsoon and East I would have to parcel up and post back so I don't really buy from them anymore but really miss them; n the high street
