Woolies is the obvious one , Kitchen Reject Shop ( which was the go to location when we were still at school for weekend shopping trips as they sold all kinds of shiny things , bracelets made of springy plastic too ) I feel like someone could make a fortune if the could bring back the nostalgic vibe of these .

Theraffarian · 16/11/2025 16:34

Oh and The Covent Garden General store .

Arlanymor · 16/11/2025 16:39

Paperchase - the big one on Tottenham Court Road. I know there's a limited range in Tesco but it's not remotely the same/as good. I enjoyed many a lunch. hour in there when I worked behind Euston.

I don't know if this counts as a shop, but there used to be a Cornish pasty place in Covent Garden with a pirate/ship-themed bar above it. It was really small, but cwtchy and a really nice place to take a date during the winter because usually people didn't know that it existed, so it was like a hidden gem type thing. I've also dated a handful of sailors in my time, so they particularly loved it!

Oh... in Edinburgh: Jenner's. Edit: pre House of Fraser takeover.

Edited

Jenners was lovely.

Agree about Woolworths.

There's a very similar shop to Paperchase in London Waterloo station - on the balcony. It's called Postmark. I don't know if it is only in London, or only in railway stations.

In Liverpool, Owen Owen and Lewis's (not to be confused with John Lewis). Lewis's for the restaurant and food hall. Owen Owen for the amazing grotto at Christmas.

I remember there being an Owen Owen in Bath, I didn't know there was one in Liverpool as well.

Oneof1183 · 16/11/2025 16:46

Debenhams and BHS. Especially Debenhams. Really missed it when doing my house up, would find everything that you need there and I have this deep nostalgia when remembering shopping there every Christmas time for my kids.

Perimenopop · 16/11/2025 16:47

Etam
Tower Records
Woolworths
Debenhams

DarkEyedSailor · 16/11/2025 16:52

Cranks restaurants, too.

she77 · 16/11/2025 16:59

Clas Ohlsen & Hema (thanks Brexit).
Paperchase
Habitat
The Pier
Lombok

watermybegonias · 16/11/2025 17:01

I wanted a new long, wool coat, but not expensive. I actually longed for C&A, they used to have a whole floor devoted to such things.

Pastit12 · 16/11/2025 17:08

Woolworths
Wilko
C & A
Wallis
Debenhams
Bhs
Ravels ( shoes)

Pastit12 · 16/11/2025 17:13

Also markets used to live and work near Pettycoat Lane in London and apartments from market stall there used to be a lot of independent shops behind the stalls .

TrickyD · 16/11/2025 17:23

Wilko, ours was a four minute walk away, very handy for a packet of Polyfila needed urgently on a Sunday.

East! I loved their clothes. They are still operating online, but it’s not the same and their clothes are now dreadful. Saggy expensive dresses not helped by models in ugly boots.

hammyhamster72 · 16/11/2025 17:31

The Pier - no shop has ever come close!

KingscoteStaff · 16/11/2025 17:33

Pratt’s, the John Lewis store in Streatham

Heals and Habitat and Paperchase on the Tottenham Court Road - I did my entire Christmas shopping in those 3!

Some many good suggestions. But GAP for me

You can buy GAP from Next directory online.

WearyExLondoner · 16/11/2025 17:39

Cranks restaurants
Stockpot restaurants (great on a student budget)
Woolies
Benjy’s sandwich shops
Dickens & Jones

And although I’m too old for them now, I feel for the younger generation missing out on:
Top Shop
Miss Selfridge
Kookai
the re-run of Biba
Lots of the vintage shops where you could buy anything from a 1950s ball gown to a pair of battered Levi’s from the 70s.

Needmorelego · 16/11/2025 17:41

You know I remember The Pier existing but I can't for the life of me remember what they sold 😂

PhuckTrump · 16/11/2025 17:54

Cath Kidston

Gap

BillieWiper · 16/11/2025 17:57

Topshop

The Italian deli near my house that shut after about 80 years. 😭

notatinydancer · 16/11/2025 17:38

You can buy GAP from Next directory online.

True, but they don’t give the 20% offers that Gap used to do. I only ever bought when I had an email discount code.

luckylavender · 16/11/2025 17:58

You can indeed buy GAP online as you can with some of the other mentioned brands. It’s just not the same.

PhuckTrump · 16/11/2025 17:59

Patisserie Valerie—used to order show stopping birthday cakes from there.
