Chelsea Girl! I can remember the special smell, the jumpers with angora in the mix, my little camel mini skirt with buttons down the side. I’m old so the original Biba too.

Chelsea Girl was rebranded as River Island so didn't really close.

My memory of Chelsea Girl is always very bright pink clothes.
River Island always makes me think beige 😂😂

Woolworths - especially the pick n mix
BHS
C and A
Dolcis
FHW
Saxone - why did half the shoe shop chains disappear?
HMV
Monsoon (well all the ones round here have disappeared)
M & S (in our neighbouring town)

RosesAndHellebores · 08/04/2026 22:55

@BlueandWhitePorcelain I think Dolcis, Saxone and Lily and Skinner had the same parent company. I loved the Lily and Skinner between Bond St and Marble Arch.

Needmorelego · 08/04/2026 23:23

@BlueandWhitePorcelain HMV hasn't gone.
They're really good (they sell a huge variety of entertainment products).
They even re opened the Oxford Street flagship store.
You can buy via their website if you don't have a branch near you.

Gap - proper Gap, not the diluted version Next sell.

Tchibo. I seek them out whenever I visit Europe. I love the concept of a cafe with special buys which change every week!

Dorothy Perkins/Princilpes for my work blouses & skirts.
Miss Selfridge/Topshop for my going out clothes
Threshers for alcohol for pre drinks
Woolworths for the huge pic n mix stand - back when chocolate was made with decent ingredients. I always bought the strawberry creams there.
Department stores - our local was Derry’s. Had posh seats in the lift & an attendant.
I wish my daughter could experience some of what we did, that feeling of going into town with a tenner in your pocket & your friends. It’s all rubbish now.
