Woolworths
The Pier
Athena
80s Body shop when it was amazing
Our price
Dolcis

Came here to say The Pier. I loved that place and still have a few things.
Ditto The Body Shop which became a sad sham once it was sold.

C&A such a great shop

Jenners, especially around Christmas

Easier to deal with this tragedy now I don’t live in Edinburgh.

Me too.

I remember going to Jenners when I was a child. It was soooooo grand. Especially at Christmas, with the huge tree and the massive toy department.

I miss my nearest John Lewis, which closed after Covid. The ones that are now nearest to me are a massive trek and both are in really grotty cities that I wouldn’t choose to visit.

Jenners in Edinburgh.
Dickins and Jones in London.
And any other top-end department store.

@MatchaMatchaMatcha it was a herbalist, it did sell soap though, stephanotis was my favourite, essential oils as well, scented cushions for sleep and lots of other things it was a lovely shop.

Sounds it!
I'd love to go back to the 90s for a day and browse all the shops

Edwinstarrihavefaithinyou · 22/03/2026 10:47

Wilcos
Bakers Oven (best cakes)

Was Bakers Oven a chain or did you happen to live near my nan?? We used to get fresh cream iced buns from there on a Saturday afternoon and I’ve never tasted anything like them.

Badbadbunny · 22/03/2026 11:50

C&A
Tandy
Woolworths
Littlewoods
BHS
Dorothy Perkins
Etam
Richards Shops
The Body Shop (when it used to be good!)

Marks & Spencer (yes, I know still exist, but we lost our town's store years ago so I've not got over that particular branch closing as the next nearest is an hour away!).

Birketts (Lancashire/Cumbria sandwich shop/bakery chain sadly taken over by the awful Greggs)

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 22/03/2026 11:58

Dorothy Perkins

Where i live Peacocks. Closed down to become a tat shop which is now also closing though only been open a few months. No doubt to become a Supermarket/vape shop cause we needed another to go with the many we already have

Wiko/Woolies

Birketts 😢 I still miss their coffee choux buns.

ToadRage · 22/03/2026 13:07

Woollies and though fairly recent I know i am going to miss Claires, there is nowhere as good for cheap and cheerful. Always used to buy earrings, hair accessories there. It was also good for little gifts for my cousins.

fussychica · 22/03/2026 13:42

Richards Shop hands down. I would buy so much from there and still miss it now.
For those saying C&A, they are still operational in Spain 🇪🇸

Oh yes! Where I worked at the time, it was customary to have cream cakes for anyone having a birthday. My order was always the coffee choux buns. They stopped doing it once Birketts was taken over by Greggs as they could never find another shop selling cream cakes, so the custom died a death thanks to Greggs!

I also loved the way they did "hand made" sandwiches to order at the counter, with virtually every option/permutation possible of different fillings, choice of salads/dressings, choice of bread, etc. Again, I stopped going once Greggs took over as scrapping the hand-made sandwich to order counters was one of the first things they did.

I really hate how the national/international corporates ruin everything by taking over all the small/independent stores, leaving with crap choice and crap quality.

Still in Germany too. When we had a short break in Berlin we found one and bought loads of stuff, but it's not something you can do on a whim whenever you need a few new clothes.

I kitted out our whole family in C&A ski wear and it lasted years. DH still has a couple of work suits from there that he still wears occasionally. It was actually pretty good quality (compared with crap today), and they did very large sizes which DH needed as he was a big guy (most high street stores didn't do the over-large sizes back in those days).

I had a Saturday job in Jenners back in the day. It was an amazing place to work…we definitely felt part of a family. I loved all the connecting bits behind the scenes…the bakery up in the attics, the corridor underneath Rose Street, the secret doors onto the main floors. Miss it very much indeed!

I do miss Woolworths as it was when I was a child, especially the huge one at the end of Princes Street in Edinburgh. Oddly specific but I used to love the smell of Mothercare….can’t describe it but I can smell it now when I think about it!

MamaBobo · 22/03/2026 17:48

We used to love Pierre Victoire @squashyhat . Great value bistro style food. Way nicer than Côte I’d say…felt more French.

Can I ask about your user name? Have you been annoying the S, A & D Mining Company?

Edwinstarrihavefaithinyou · 22/03/2026 17:54

@MamaBobo what a lovely post about a bygone era.
Would have loved to see behind the scenes at Jenner's.
We went to Jenner's anytime we happened to be visiting Edinburgh.

Tower Records. Used to spend hours in there just flicking through the CDs. It was a 4 story shop sou could easily spend an afternoon there.

And Virgin Records spent many a happy Saturday afternoon in there !

Pratts in Streatham.
All of the department stores. Oxford Street Saturday shopping is dreadful now.

I miss Pratts and the other shops there, Che Guevara (sp?), Stirling Cooper, Abraxas and the tiny Benetton. My 70s/80s stomping ground. Plus amazing restaurants. They closed The Wholemeal Cafe too! 😥

Isn’t jenners reopening? I went there with my boyfriend in early 90s to buy a navy suspender belt! Well he bought it!

At least we still have John Lewis, Selfridges there! Agreed it is dire now. Did they close Fenwicks?
