Bhs, Debenhams - I shopped in both regularly. I’m now relying more on supermarkets for clothes

I'm in Canada.
The Bay.
Closed this past spring. A total loss for our country that the company, founded in 1670 by royal charter and sold to foreign ownership was run into the ground. National historical documents held privately.
An utter shame on many levels.

Blimey. I lived in Toronto for a bit and I used to love The Bay. Can’t believe that’s gone!

And it was a somewhat non-event overshadowed, I think, by US politics and our own federal elections.

C and A are still going in Europe I think. I went in one in Montpellier years ago and it was like going back in time. So much nicer than Primark. It was sad that they left the UK , plus they owned the land the shops were on as well ( so I’ve been told )

ThatshallotBaby · 19/03/2026 21:12

All the above, plus La Senza and Jane Norman. And Culpeper.

I worked at culpeper, back in the 80s I loved it, when I took the banking at the end of the day the staff used to smell the banknotes because they had picked up the scent of the shop.

Was it a soap shop?

Erin1975 · 22/03/2026 09:41

Tower Records. Used to spend hours in there just flicking through the CDs. It was a 4 story shop sou could easily spend an afternoon there.

Tonysredapron · 22/03/2026 09:48

@MatchaMatchaMatcha it was a herbalist, it did sell soap though, stephanotis was my favourite, essential oils as well, scented cushions for sleep and lots of other things it was a lovely shop.
