Woolworths, Wilkos and The Pier (gorgeous homemade).

The Pier is what immediately sprang to my mind. Loved that shop.

wilkos - although i used it rarely
BHS - although it got more expensive
woolworths of course!
our local hardware shop, i think the owner retired, it is now a charity shop Sad

What happened to BHS why did it get more expensive?

BreakingWaves · 16/11/2025 22:46

Lots of the ones already mentioned here, but also (don't think anyone has said it yet): Faith.

As a teenager it was the only place I could get fashionable shoes in my size.

Oneof1183 · 16/11/2025 22:53

There was also a store called Brantano, not sure if it was in all cities but it was brilliant for shopping for kids shoes, brollies etc

pinkpony88 · 16/11/2025 22:59

Outskirts of Bournemouth, Wickes was nearby so DP happy to go there.

Another vote for Spoils. Great for kitchenware and homeware, with some pocket money gifts in one section with things you didn’t see elsewhere.

Kickinthenostalgia · 16/11/2025 23:09

Woolworths, especially around this time of year. I worked for them for 4 years, till the end, met one of my best friends there. We’ve grown together, we both found we were pregnant there. She met her husband there. Best group of people I’ve worked with.
also went there every Saturday as a kid with my mum, used to go at Christmas non stop.

Yogaandchocolate · 16/11/2025 23:11

The Pier for me too!

ehb102 · 16/11/2025 23:12

Oliver Adams bakeries. Used to visit to get Northamptonshire brioche AKA their lardy cake 😋. Not found a good one since (but now I live in the East of England so possibly not surprising).

Ann Harvey. Great clothes for fat women. Can't get anything on the high street in my city.

Pied a Terre shoes. I spent a fortune (repeatedly) in their Covent Garden shop when I was a new grad working in London. Their shoes were just amazing. They sold the brand to Nine West in 1996 and that was the end of that. 😥

I bought a v expensive pair of boots at Pied a terre when I was a student and loved them - wore them till they fell apart. I’ve never found a pair since that matched up to them.
The pier as well - loved loads of things they sold there

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/11/2025 23:16

I'm in Canada.
The Bay.
Closed this past spring. A total loss for our country that the company, founded in 1670 by royal charter and sold to foreign ownership was run into the ground. National historical documents held privately.
An utter shame on many levels.

ZenZazie · 16/11/2025 23:58

Very recent but Fired Earth. I just got a sample of a tile for a home project and I really love it. Now I won’t be able to get it

Our local John Lewis

Peterborough?
It's left a vast vacuum.in the town centre.

Effiegee · 17/11/2025 00:25

Yes, Dan Evans in Barry - the only dept. store spread over many shops in Holton Road! My grandmother used to treat me and put it on her ‘account’ - those were the days.
Also the amazing Pratts in Streatham, even in the 80’s it was like stepping back in time.
Faith
The Pier
Etam
Laura Ashley (most of all)

Thank heavens John Lewis and M&S are still alive and kicking!

HoppityBun · 17/11/2025 00:39

Culpeppers herbal shops. I loved their potpourri in particular.

Fullers tearooms, but I bet nobody remembers those, and their walnut cake.

bendmeoverbackwards · 17/11/2025 00:51

Clements department store in Watford
Etcetera - Golders Green Road
John Barnes (John Lewis) Finchley Road (now a Waitrose)
Jones Brothers (John Lewis) - Holloway Road (also now a Waitrose)
