Richard Shops & Principles, I bought all my clothes from both of them, everything was always well made & fitted well, I've still got some of the T shirts 30 years later.

Woolworths. And Wilkinsons. Wilko was a flash in the pan, gone. BHS. Beatties. Local Argos. Debenhams. Toys r Us. Littlewoods. Kwik Save (ageing myself now). Etam and Tammy Girl. Borders. Adams. Partners. Mothercare. Littlewoods. We don’t even have an M&S in our main town shops any more. Though you take your life in your hands venturing to shop there anyway. Gangs of balaclava teens and younger on bikes. Last time I went there to buy make up from Boots, staff members were assaulted and the thieves (mums with buggies) made off with what they’d stolen. I spoke to a staff member who told me that the police won’t even come out, it happens daily. They’re just told not to try to prevent them from leaving as they’ll only get hurt.

The owner of Poundworld started One Below which was then renamed One Beyond.
My nearest branch has really grumpy staff but it's a good shop.

We’ve got one at Merry Hill, but it’s just like a jumble sale. Poindworld used to do some really nice summer bits and rings like that - the quality isn’t the same now, which is a shame.

Needmorelego · 17/11/2025 09:12

@Mydogsmellslikewee the branch in my mums town is lovely and tidy but yes my nearest one can get a bit cluttered.
But they do a shower foam my daughter loves so I'm happy to step over the clutter.

Kennedys. (This will mean nothing if you don't come from South-East London.)

Never found sausage rolls or steak pies anywhere near as good.

Another still mourning the loss of Kennedys the pies & Sausages were sublime
not sure if Percy Ingles bakers was also a SE London only chain the rolls were fabulous also Grants/Shellys shoe shops.
Yy the pier & most of the shops mentioned on the thread our local Wilkos shop still empty such a shame was so useful for odd bits n pieces the cleaning products were great, the homebase has been taken over by the range which does stock some wilko stuff not nearly as good though.

Needmorelego · 17/11/2025 10:29

@dontcallmelen I think you might live near me.
Did your local Poundland recently burn down?

dontcallmelen · 17/11/2025 10:36

@Needmorelego yes it did! Made the high street even sadder.

It's awful and so annoying because that branch wasn't on the closure list 🙁

Percy Ingles had a number of shops in east London too.

Londongent · 17/11/2025 14:02

Debenhams, it was really good for men's clothes. There is hardly anywhere now where men can go and try on clothes. I don't want the hassle of ordering online, finding something doesn't fit and have to send it back

Fgfgfg · 17/11/2025 17:57

Druckers

Woolworths 😭 and Topshop Oxford Street… so sad my daughter doesn’t get to go there!!!!

HRTQueen · 17/11/2025 21:32

The Pier

I still have things from The Pier I don’t care that it may look dated I like the look

also wilkos but I do love The Range and they have bits from Wilkos

BeautifulTulips · 17/11/2025 21:57

Definitely Debenhams , I really miss it and it makes me sad when you go to almost every city centre and there is a large empty building which was clearly Debenhams!

Woolworths and more niche, a shoe shop, called Grants, which had a branch on Walworth Road, decades ago now, and sold the most wonderful shoes. Oh, and Kennedy's, a chain in SE London of delicatessen/ butchers.

Kennedy’s! Yes! They had a shop on the Walworth Road and would look after my meat while I went to East Street market and I’d pick it up on the way home.

FeatheryFlorence · 17/11/2025 22:02

Pratts in Streatham.
All of the department stores. Oxford Street Saturday shopping is dreadful now.
