Tattoos aren’t cool anymore …

PartWave · 02/11/2025 14:46

I watched this video and found it really interesting. The first minute or two with the girl are a bit annoying, but once you get into it, there’s a lot being said.

Also, this video (which is a bit sadder), of people who definitely regret their tattoos

Personally, I am not anti-tattoo (though I used to be). Sometimes I think they can look good. However I think both videos really bring out the problems with them, particularly of course their permanence, as well as identifying fashions.

I just thought it would be interesting to share ….

When posters talk about "lovely clean skin" in these threads, it makes me think of Silence of the Lambs.

Hahaha yes it has a tone of serial killer eyeing up their next skin outfit!

sleeppleasesoon · 03/11/2025 14:47

Whenever i see a heavily tattooed person I think they must not be very happy in their skin. Insecure also maybe.

I also wonder if it’s a legitimate form of self harm as some people find comfort in the pain of having a needle mark their skin.

RaraRachael · 03/11/2025 14:50

@Pharazon yes to be honest there weren't many of those in my friendship circle.

I’ve never looked at a tattoo and thought it makes someone cooler or more attractive.

That is true.

I have had it the opposite way though. A man I found very attractive got an awful neck tattoo.

Instant uglification.

Tasteful tattoo = oxymoron

In your opinion.

Do you normally think very deeply about people you dont know?

And would it make you feel a bit sheepish if you ever found out the persons mental health you are spending time making assumptions about was actually absolutely fine?

DarkPassenger1 · 03/11/2025 15:18

I think this is a difficulty when it comes to getting tattoos purely for the aesthetics. If that's the driver, then when they start to fade or look dated or your taste changes there's likely to be some regret. Tbf though most of the people I know who fall under that category are still glad they have the tattoos as a marker for part of their life/representation of the 'old them', I've not met many who genuinely wish they could go back in time and not have it done.

Mine are for personal/meaning reasons (ethics, emotions, memorial) so I truly believe I will always be grateful I got them. Going on 20+yr since getting them so if regret ever kicks in I'll be surprised. I do recommend people sit on a tattoo idea for at least a couple of years before going for it though, as I did.

RaraRachael · 03/11/2025 15:23

When I was younger I always said I wouldn't fancy a man if he had long hair, tattoos or an earring.

Tbh I haven't really changed my mind 😅

No, not sheepish.

Im sure I’m wrong. But I also might be right.

You'll be right about some of them I imagine, a stopped clock is right twice a day after all.

I find it interesting that you say you wouldnt feel sheepish, that seems to me to be a very normal reaction when youve assumed someone has MH issues just based on their appearance.

You do you though I guess. Hope it continues to provide you with.....whatever it is you get from it and it makes you happy!

AgentPidge · 03/11/2025 11:23

Exactly. They're part of a fashion trend - if they weren't, no one would have them (apart from sailors). My mum always hated them because she had relatives tattooed in the death camps.

But yes, re fashion - I was in a niche clothing place with teen DD in Carnaby Street some years back. Loads of tattoos on display on the staff and customers. I said to DD "Why do they have them?" and she said "To be different", and gave a little smile. She liked them but got the irony.

Your teen daughter knew why they'd had tattoos? Righto.

CNDflag · 03/11/2025 15:54

My tattoos are awesome and I look cool as fuck 😎

seriously, I have quite a few by one artist whose style I adore. I also have orange, yellow and pink hair and still rock an alternative look at 52.

Yes quite. I'm not speaking for anyone else.

Pozz · 03/11/2025 16:03

Tattoos are like marmite. Some people see art. Some see graffiti

pinkyredrose · 03/11/2025 15:50

Said teen daughter sounds smug and unlikeable! haha

Nobody gets a tattoo to be 'different' anymore, it's more uncommon imo to see someone without any at all. I'm often actively surprised when I meet someone who hasn't had one, because they're so extensive. It's pretty much the norm to have tattoos in many areas.

OSTMusTisNT · 03/11/2025 16:09

I worked with a beautiful 18 year old lass about 20 years ago who covered herself in bright pink shooting stars and described them as her 'brand'. They were hideous then and I'll bet she regrets them now at nearly 40.

Not sure I would ever describe something permanent as cool or not cool.

Are you feeling triggered?

Londontown12 · 03/11/2025 16:21

These threads honestly !
Tattoos have been around along time !
They will always be around if u don’t like them fine (wind ya neck in ) I don’t like ya net curtains but I’m not banging on about them on a forum cus they not cool anymore lol
As I said they been around forever and people still have them !
it’s a personal choice and if u regret them it wasn’t the scene for you if u have them to TRY and b cool u will regret them !
if your cool your cool whatever you choose !
People need to make choices that they want to do and not follow what everyone else is doing ! Own your style !
(I do have a lot of tattoos but u wud never guess only in the summer ) 😎

I think this is the problem now. You're view is right. You get what you pay for. And also you get them for their specific meaning to you. Nowadays people just get tattoos because they like the picture 🙄 I met a girl who had a rosary on her hand. Asked her if she was religious. No she said. She just liked the picture 🙄 some people are just too stupid to be getting something so permanent

Some years' back I was behind a girl in the check out queue - she bent down and her tracky bottoms slid down to reveal her ample buttocks. Right across the top of her arse was a line of Arabic writing - probably a famous script from the Koran!

Oh fucking hell😂 it's ridiculous how easily people mark themselves for life and you just know there will be massive regret

This might disappoint you, but nothing about what that poster has said indicates they're feeling 'triggered'.

Edited

Yes I suspect it was more of a "id like to think i might "trigger" some tattooed people by saying i think they have issues".

Im triggered by the overuse of the word triggered though 😂
