Tattoos aren’t cool anymore …

PartWave · 02/11/2025 14:46

I watched this video and found it really interesting. The first minute or two with the girl are a bit annoying, but once you get into it, there’s a lot being said.

Also, this video (which is a bit sadder), of people who definitely regret their tattoos

Personally, I am not anti-tattoo (though I used to be). Sometimes I think they can look good. However I think both videos really bring out the problems with them, particularly of course their permanence, as well as identifying fashions.

I just thought it would be interesting to share ….

I just don’t see why it matters. I have 3 one from when I was 20ish and I still like it, 1 I’m getting lasered at the moment as i don’t like it and I pretty much didn’t as soon as I got it 😂 now 15 or so years down the line decided to remove it and 1 I had a couple of years ago at about 36 which I thought about for around 2 years before getting it done. They don’t have to be permanent you can remove them fairly successfully if you have absolute regret. At the end of the day it doesn’t affect anyone else if someone has or hasn’t got one, got it because something was cool at the time etc. half the time people who have tattoos especially when they are covered forget they have them 🤷‍♀️

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/11/2025 10:05

I do find it interesting when people regret their tattoos and go through agony and thousands of £ to get them lasered off. Interesting in the sense of what makes fhem different to those who never regret them? Everyone has the same facts at their disposal before they start.

I do think there will come a time when they will be a lot less popular than they are now. It's inevitable, fashions and trends come and go and generations like to make their own mark.

CNDflag · 04/11/2025 10:15

I have an ancient tramp stamp (Chinese symbol.. how very Y2K!😂), it’s naff but it’s part of my history so I like it in a strange way!

I’ve never regretted any of my ink though.

I have tattoos, the work is done by 2 incredible artists. The quality of the artists these days is mostly outstanding.
I certainly haven't got mine to be "fashionable"
And I definitely don't and won't regret them

I have tattoos. I never thought they were "cool". I also have scars. They're as permanent as my tattoos (and also self-inflicted). I don't think they're cool either, but their permanence doesn't make them a huge source of regret to me. My body is changing all the time, irreversibly & I'm ok with that. The tattoos mean something to me, and especially in the context of the scars - like a positive mirror image of all the violence I did to myself, like my body can be something to decorate and enjoy instead of something to hate and damage. "Cool" , or what a tictokker or a mumsnetter or a "higher standard of professional" man on dating apps thinks of them, just isn't on the radar.

I love this. I Love that you’ve done something positive for yourself.

Mine are to commemorate the babies I lost.

No fashion involved at all. Just one small tattoo that combines an item from ancient history and a symbol. Can't be easily seen. And I am generally regarded, among those who know me as 'a posh bird'.

So not class, not fashion, not edgy. Just me and my memories.

Edited

My friend has a beautiful tattoo for her stillborn baby boy. It is truly a work of art and I cried when I saw it.

Whenever i see a heavily tattooed person I think they must not be very happy in their skin. Insecure also maybe.

I also wonder if it’s a legitimate form of self harm as some people find comfort in the pain of having a needle mark their skin.

wtf? Confused

CruCru · 04/11/2025 11:44

There’s a Chinese woman on Instagram who shows pictures of Westerners’ Chinese symbol tattoos and translates them. “Foreign pervert” was one.

CruCru · 04/11/2025 11:48

Her name is jessiez888.

cardibach · 04/11/2025 11:48

I’m 61. I have 3. One I got for my 50th after years of thought, one I got to mark a significant physical challenge I undertook earlier this year and another I got just before my 61st birthday after very little planning (it is about something very close to my heart and identity though and I love it). I’d say the one I thought most about (the first) is my least favourite, but I don’t dislike it.
As with pretty much all the decisions I’ve made whether they were ‘cool’ or not wasn’t a factor. I git them because I wanted to. (Was nothing to do with the pain either as suggested by a PP - I am not a fan and the only self harm I do is drinking alcohol, and eating too many carbs…)

I wonder, if ancient Egyptian grannies also used to yap about tattoos being 'tacky' and 'not being cool/going out of fashion' anymore all those thousands years ago.

Anyway, it's simple. Don't like them - don't get them, and keep your beak out of other people's business. I loved the look of tattoos at 7, 17, 27 and now, at 37. My personal style has been very consistent, I've always been alternative. Just more spikes, chains and other paraphernalia at 17, and slightly more understated, expensive and adult metalhead version now at 37. I'm not heavily tattooed yet, but working on it. And I love heavily tattooed men, necks and hands included.

If Mary in her yellow Seasalt parka and sensible ankle boots thinks they look tacky and disgusting - all the better to me.

You like tattoos because you’re ‘alternative?’

The point of the OP and many of the other posts is that tattoos are not ‘alternative’ though. They haven’t been for years and years. As someone said upthread, all the women over 50 on the Morrisons checkout have them. They are totally mainstream and seem to be particularly popular with middle aged or older people. How is that alternative? If you watch the video, many younger people now think ratios are uncool because so many of their parents have them.

They were when I got them.
Which was 1990.
It was very rare to see women with tattoos.

I actually like it now that more women are not afraid for want of a better word to be heavily tattooed.
Most of the stigma is gone.
My sons teachers have visible tattoos, including on their neck.

When we were on holiday in Europe last year, the young women looked as if they’d been crayoning huge flowers and leaves on their legs, they were very identikit.

Trouble is, colours fade to a blue smudge which is pretty uglifying

We’re all just giving our opinions, right?

They don't fade to blue smudge with modern inks plus you can always have them reworked if you don't like how they age.

Anyway I'd rather look at someone's tattoos than cellulite or varicose veins. Just my opinion.

That’s a lot of projection. Have you thought about a hobby to fill your time?

Do you have tattoos?

I’m not sure it should make any difference either way. Or do you respond to people specifically based on their appearance?

Oooo, comments already. But for those who have time also, the videos are interesting to watch 😊

I've watched the videos.......very interesting and informed. I'm not keen on tattoos, but each to their own, if you want them go ahead.
Looking at some of the people in the videos heavily inked, just no.
Far too much ink.

Each to their own but not too much to their own?

Fair comment.
I'm trying to be diplomatic, but obviously I didn't do a very good job.
I genuinely think anyone can do what they want to their body..... tattoos, piercings.
Let's just leave it there.

Booklook · 12/11/2025 19:22

When I went to a literacy workshop at DS's school (DS now 24) I was the only mum there who didn't have a tattoo.

I haven't watched the video, but it's not rocket science to know that something widespread amongst middle aged mums isnt going to be "cool".

Sarover · 14/11/2025 04:29

Absolutely. How can it be true that something the majority of middle aged people have is ‘cool’ or ‘alternative’ ?
