Tattoos aren’t cool anymore …

I watched this video and found it really interesting. The first minute or two with the girl are a bit annoying, but once you get into it, there’s a lot being said.

Also, this video (which is a bit sadder), of people who definitely regret their tattoos

Personally, I am not anti-tattoo (though I used to be). Sometimes I think they can look good. However I think both videos really bring out the problems with them, particularly of course their permanence, as well as identifying fashions.

I just thought it would be interesting to share ….

I haven’t watched the videos but I think that tattoos may be entering the word of massive lips, huge eyebrows and obvious plastic surgery. I expect that very young people aren’t going to go in for tattoos in the same way - partly because they are what their mums and dads have. Plus tattoos date quite badly (I remember the tribal tattoos in the 90s - most were really badly (cheaply) done).

Shininglightshiningbright · 02/11/2025 14:58

I'm not clicking on your links OP but honestly it really isn't a big surprise to me: thats the way fashion works isn't it? As soon as something becomes so normal the world and his wife has it then the " cool" people have to do something different. In this case not get tattoos.

I won't lie: i'm delighted if this is the case.i find tattoos positively unsightly.

Tattoos have been around for a long time. They aren't to my personal taste, but there will always be people who do like them, and why not?

I’m a heavily tattooed person.

Some of my earliest ones, yeah I absolutely regret. They are dated, not done particularly well so the lines aren’t as neat and crispy as they once were - but they are in places that are always covered now. So the only person who ever sees them is my DH. Even if I’m in a bikini, I can cover them if I want to with a pair of highwaisted bottoms. So I’m not going to go to the trouble of having them lasered.
The others, that are in very visible places? I still love them. I worked closely with my artist to come up with the designs, and she has a wonderful track record with previous clients giving her gleaming reviews, so I trusted her absolutely to do a good job.
Also important to remember that with tattoos, you get what you pay for 👀
”Got a new tattoo, it only cost me £80” 👀👀👀 I know it did mate…..I’m looking at it 🫠🫠😂😂😂

Pollqueen · 02/11/2025 15:07

I don't like tattoos, especially those on necks, faces and hands but it's like any trend, it passes. I expect laser tattoo removers will be busy

PartWave · 02/11/2025 15:09

Oooo, comments already. But for those who have time also, the videos are interesting to watch 😊

Doesn't surprise me - the things we like in our teens and twenties are (by and large) not the things we like in our later years, and tattoos aren't any different. Tattoo removal places are going to be very busy in the coming years - I might invest in one.

BunnyLake · 02/11/2025 15:10

My eldest has a few tattoos but my youngest doesn’t. Eldests tattoos are very nice (expensive, months long waiting lists, top quality place) youngest says his body is a temple and he’s not going to graffitti it 😁

FlyingApple · 02/11/2025 15:10

When were they cool?

coxesorangepippin · 02/11/2025 15:11

Of course they're not cool anymore

All the 70 year olds have them

DickDewey · 02/11/2025 15:13

Were they ever cool? I’d be gutted if our kids had tattoos. Does anyone at 50 like tattoos they had at 25?

I had a tattoo done in Australia on my gap year. By the time I was 35, I hated it. By 45, I was really embarrassed about it. I’ve had it removed. I cringe about it. It was never cool.

Carlott4 · 02/11/2025 15:14

I’ve never looked at a tattoo and thought it makes someone cooler or more attractive.

Catonacoldfridgefreezer · 02/11/2025 15:15

I’m in my 50s and have a really tacky rose tattoo that I had done as a somewhat tipsy 19 year old. Thank god it’s on my stomach and can be hidden with bikini bottoms.

waitamo · 02/11/2025 15:19

Can they be successfully removed? I'd imagine that would cost a lot too.

I don't particularly like them, but I'm not the one that has them, so it's a free country.

Davros · 02/11/2025 15:21

The first time I saw a “normal” person with a tattoo (not a sailor etc) was around 1975. She was a hairdresser and in a band so maybe a bit more adventurous. I can’t believe anyone thinks they’re “edgy” 40 years later 😹 ditto ripped knee jeans

Cosyblackcatonbed · 02/11/2025 15:24

People should never do anything permanent to their bodies to be "cool", it's bound to end in regret. Do it because it's meaningful or you love tattoos, not to follow a trend. I personally don't like tattoos on most people, it's rare that I think a tattoo actually looks good and suits a person, but when chosen well they do really suit some people.

keffie12 · 02/11/2025 15:34

I love my tattoos. Nor will I be getting rid and I plan to have more. I'm indie in my style and tattoos are part of me.

I made the choice as an adult to have tattoos from my 40s on and I have no regrets. The tattoos I have all have meaning.

I'm not covered in skulls and the dark side type. That is not got me.

Some people hang there art. I wear mine.

How judgemental you are, I have two tasteful ones no regrets

sonjadog · 02/11/2025 15:43

I watched some of the first video, and then I lost interest, as people who say "everyone is talking/thinking..." about something annoy me because obviously everyone is not doing that.

I have tattoos. I don't give a shit what anyone else thinks about them and if they comment them negatively I will just think they are a rude person, like I would if they had commented my arse-size or hair or whatever. Unsolicited comments on other people's appearance are rude, whatever they are about. If someone thought I was unclean just because of having tattoos, I would think they are an idiot.

However, I do see that if someone is very into trends and therefore this "clean girl asthetic" the annoying video-girl goes on about, then tattoos would be an issue for them, and if they got tattoos previously when the "tattooed girl asthetic", or whatever it was called, was the trend, then I see they would regret them. The problem to me would seem to be mainly letting trends control your life-choices. The now unwanted tattoos are merely a symptom of that.

cottonwoolie · 02/11/2025 15:48

They used to be a bit unusual, now they are ubiquitous so invariably will become less popular.

SandStormNorm · 02/11/2025 15:52

As a sarcoma patient (tumour just under skin), I think the health risks of tattoo art are understated in the industry, and many customers will be unaware of the long term implications. I have lots of scar tissue around my surgery which hurts a lot as it is in a prominent position on my hand. Some of the keloids and hypersensitive reactions to tattoo ink are some of the issues found, and this would bring a lot of pain or irritation too. Some inks impact the lymph system and can delay cancer diagnosis (e.g. melanoma). I don't mind some well designed tattoo designs as it is hard not to admire the skills of the artist working on a living canvas, and think it is a personal decision (but it should be one informed by the evidence on risk). While some tattoo art looks good when first applied, we have all seen the washed out shrunken blobs on people that were some design or other ten or twenty years previously. I wonder if it is all worth it, and would choose not to have one myself.

Removal is expensive and incredibly painful. Much more painful than getting the tattoo in the first place.

Worried198423 · 02/11/2025 15:58

I'm 52 and I'm still getting tattooed.
I love tattoos,I l9ve the process of getting them.
Don't love the healing though.

I got my 1st at 17,there's a few I don't like but they're not offensive, so I'll leave them for the time being.

The thing I regret is wasting prime skin on some small tattoos.
That's my only regret.

Kuretake · 02/11/2025 15:59

I remember people saying tattoos aren't cool now everyone has for at least the last 25 years. They've never really been cool in isolation - fashions in what to get tattooed come and go of course.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/11/2025 15:59

Carlott4 · 02/11/2025 15:14

I have, once. The tattoo covered this person's whole back and was an absolute work of it. That said, it would have been better framed on a wall.
