Tattoos aren’t cool anymore …

I watched this video and found it really interesting. The first minute or two with the girl are a bit annoying, but once you get into it, there’s a lot being said.

Also, this video (which is a bit sadder), of people who definitely regret their tattoos

Personally, I am not anti-tattoo (though I used to be). Sometimes I think they can look good. However I think both videos really bring out the problems with them, particularly of course their permanence, as well as identifying fashions.

I just thought it would be interesting to share ….

Removal is expensive and incredibly painful. Much more painful than getting the tattoo in the first place.

Not my experience - was about the same. I got a terrible tattoo I got at 16 removed quite recently. It was fine.

How judgemental you are, I have two tasteful ones no regrets

How is disliking something judgemental?

Do you really think we are all sheep and should automatically like the same thing?

Everyone has, or should have, the right to an opinion. My opinion is tattoos are unsightly. I am as entitled to think that , just as much as you are entitled to think they aren't.

NewHome2026 · 02/11/2025 16:01

I’ve watched the videos. It’s interesting. I know someone who would fall under the category of “tattooed person” and is covered practically head to toe. So is her sister which I think is also interesting! I also know plenty of people with one or two.

The latter group I understand more - I have tried to liken it to me being desperate to get the top of my eat pierced when I was 16 but the whole tattooed person look I will never understand. And it’s not even that I hate them necessarily I just don’t get it, what’s the point? It’s soooo expensive and so often makes you look a bit like a thug and they are permanent so what if you don’t like it? Or it’s not what you thought it would be in your head?

I particularly don’t get meme tattoos or tattoos of people/characters. I have never liked a famous person that much!

The hypocrisy of it is she says you are judgemental thereby judging you.

MidnightMeltdown · 02/11/2025 16:02

Tattoos were cool? I’ve always thought they look hideous.

It’s a permanent stain on your skin, not a passing fashion trend.

HangingOver · 02/11/2025 16:04

I love mine whether it's cool or not 🙂 They're special to me and I think they look nice.

IsntItDarkOut · 02/11/2025 16:04

When I go to Morrisons most of the older women who serve on the tills have them, so no I don’t think they can be described as cool.

I always remember going swimming with DD when she was little and loads of the dad has those Robbie Williams tribal tattoos on their arms. I think they are far too driven by fashion to be cool really.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 02/11/2025 16:07

I have never ever wanted a tattoo, for the simple reason that I want the choice to change over time if I want. For example, I don't wear the same clothes I did when I was 19. I like to think I've evolved a bit. Not massively so, but something which suited me when I was 19 wouldn't suit me now and I think that goes for a lot of tattoo designs. I like to be able to swap and change my jewellery. I have some things I did wear when I was 19 and still wear them sometimes, but I like to be able to swap it out for something different. Or choose to wear no jewellery at all if I want. Not having the choice to do that with tattoos is not something which appeals to me at all.

I also don't like the idea of being permanently branded by something, like some type of label to (literally) idenitfy me. Maybe that makes me a control freak or something, I've no idea.

I do like some of the better designs on some other people. But so many people have SO many really badly done ones, I often think to myself "blimey, you've ruined your lovely body" and it's very hard to know what to say when someone proudly shows you their shit tattoo on FB or in person, other than "are you pleased with it?"

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/11/2025 16:08

I haven’t looked at the videos but interesting what you say. There were a few arguments between my DS and his dad when he was around 16/17 on the subject of tattoos (DH is very anti ) . DS was keen and would talk about the designs he was doing to get. But … he’s 24 now and still no tattoos.

I guess it’s the same as getting them done - pain level depends on placement?

My best friend had an old one lasered a few years ago, it was on her lower stomach area and she scared me with tales of how painful removal was.
That area is up there with one of the most painful areas I’ve ever had tattooed…..so they can stay there 🫠😂 Not wandering around with my belly out very often these days anyway 😂

Oh yes probably this was on my shoulder. I have one just under my ribs that was sore to get and probably would be sore to remove! And also yes nobody sees it these days so it can chill there ha.

TheBestTimes · 02/11/2025 16:12

When you see so many idiots with them, it’s no surprise that they’re not cool.

BauhausOfEliott · 02/11/2025 16:15

There are newspaper articles going back to at least the 1800s about tattoos ‘becoming’ a trend. I don’t think tattooing, which is a centuries-old (millennia-old, in many cases) tradition one way or another on every continent on this earth, is going to die out

Tattoos are not a big deal. At all. If you don’t like them or think you’d regret them, don’t get any. No need to fret about other people’s choices; they don’t affect you.

BauhausOfEliott · 02/11/2025 16:19

Carlott4 · 02/11/2025 15:14

I’ve never looked at a tattoo and thought it makes someone cooler or more attractive.

I strongly doubt anyone who gets a tattoo is doing so in the hope that they want someone like you to find them cool and attractive.

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 02/11/2025 16:19

I have two tattoos and a DH who is covered.

I don't really care if people think they're "cool". I got them because I like them. I'll get more one day too.

Dollymylove · 02/11/2025 16:20

DickDewey · 02/11/2025 15:13

Were they ever cool? I’d be gutted if our kids had tattoos. Does anyone at 50 like tattoos they had at 25?

I had a tattoo done in Australia on my gap year. By the time I was 35, I hated it. By 45, I was really embarrassed about it. I’ve had it removed. I cringe about it. It was never cool.

Problem is, the tattoos you had at 25 with nice tight skin are not going to look the same in your 50s when your skin starts to sag, and your tatts fade.
Not a good look imho 😉

I don't think anyone with a tattoo got it done for your benefit 😂

dailyconniptions · 02/11/2025 16:21

They look absolutely awful to me. Like graffiti on lovely clean skin. I detest the way they all end up navy blue and smudged in the end. Why do that to yourself?

Laveritas · 02/11/2025 16:22

Every single thing in the world is ‘uncool’ to someone else..just be you

barleyblues · 02/11/2025 16:23

coxesorangepippin · 02/11/2025 15:11

Of course they're not cool anymore

All the 70 year olds have them

This 70 year old doesn't and neither do any of my peers.

Because people want to.

Why do you care?

DressOrSkirt · 02/11/2025 16:25

As someone who has been uncool my whole life this makes zero difference to me.
(I have 15 tattoos and 2 more booked for later in the year).

Gowlett · 02/11/2025 16:30

I’m still fond of my tramp stamp.
It only gets an airing on holiday.
Wasn’t even cool, back then…

Bumblebee72 · 02/11/2025 16:30

Tattoos are pretty mainstream now. Of course the "cool" youngsters won't be doing it anymore that is just how fashion works.

It always makes me laugh when people come on these threads and say how awful they think tattoos/piercings look.

Okay? Don't get them then 😂
