Tattoos aren’t cool anymore …

PartWave · 02/11/2025 14:46

I watched this video and found it really interesting. The first minute or two with the girl are a bit annoying, but once you get into it, there’s a lot being said.

Also, this video (which is a bit sadder), of people who definitely regret their tattoos

Personally, I am not anti-tattoo (though I used to be). Sometimes I think they can look good. However I think both videos really bring out the problems with them, particularly of course their permanence, as well as identifying fashions.

I just thought it would be interesting to share ….

I've never liked them... they have been about for years but i think when they started getting popular people got them to look edgy or supercool but in reality was a bit of a cry for attention.

I think most people just look like they've been drawn on. its not cool, big or clever.

GagMeWithASpoon · 02/11/2025 16:35

I have 5. Got my first one at 18 and I’m in my 40’s now. Don’t regret any of them, and at the moment looking for a design to “click “ so I can get another one.

It’s entirely irrelevant whether they’re cool or not, because that is not one of the reasons I get them.

Tattoos will always have their place. But when they became so fashionable this was inevitable. Too many people are willing to blindly follow trends without thinking it through.

Endofyear · 02/11/2025 16:46

I used to quite like tattoos but now everyone's got them, I don't really want one any more! Contrary Mary 😂 I do think it's quite addictive though, most of my friends who have them have gone on to have another and another. I think now everyone's got tattoos they're mainstream and a bit naff.

They've been mainstream for about 25 years though. When was it you used to like them?

Mistyglade · 02/11/2025 16:52

They never have been to me.

It always makes me laugh when people come on these threads and say how awful they think tattoos/piercings look.

Okay? Don't get them then 😂

Yes, but we still have to look at other peoples'.

I can remember going to my gym where we had an open ladies changing room and I wondered why the girl changing next to me had a fanny that was "twinkling" at me.
It turned out she had a piercing down there.

Ouch 😮

greengreyblue · 02/11/2025 16:56

They never were cool in my opinion but I’m sure the people who get them think they are. Each to their own

dailyconniptions · 02/11/2025 16:58

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 02/11/2025 16:25

Because people want to.

Why do you care?

Because I have to look at them on people frequently and they ruin the view!

SpottyAardvark · 02/11/2025 16:59

That presupposes that tattoos were ever considered ‘cool’ in the first place. Not in my world, they weren’t. Ghastly, chavvy things.

I mean, you have to look at all kinds of things you might not like everyday.

I'm still not sure why someone thinks hating tattoos makes any difference to those of us who do have them and like them.

AsAliveAsYouNeedMeToBe · 02/11/2025 16:59

I wonder, if ancient Egyptian grannies also used to yap about tattoos being 'tacky' and 'not being cool/going out of fashion' anymore all those thousands years ago.

Anyway, it's simple. Don't like them - don't get them, and keep your beak out of other people's business. I loved the look of tattoos at 7, 17, 27 and now, at 37. My personal style has been very consistent, I've always been alternative. Just more spikes, chains and other paraphernalia at 17, and slightly more understated, expensive and adult metalhead version now at 37. I'm not heavily tattooed yet, but working on it. And I love heavily tattooed men, necks and hands included.

If Mary in her yellow Seasalt parka and sensible ankle boots thinks they look tacky and disgusting - all the better to me.

Spiderplantseverywhere · 02/11/2025 17:01

My DD works in a beauty salon. They have a tattoo removal specialist who comes in several.times a week, she is inundated with work. Goodness knows how they laser off full black out tattoos which imo are hideous.

I've never wanted a tattoo, my grandad was covered in them (had them all done as a young man during WW2), he regretted and hated them so much that he would cover up even on the hottest summer days.

His hatred for his tattoos was enough to put me off for life.

Tattoos will always be to individual taste. Some love them some hate them, some are indifferent. I doubt it’s something that will come and go like clothing fashion. I don’t think anyone thought they were “cool” (whatever that means)

Can we see what you wear then? So we can make sure you're not offending us and ruining our view?

SirChenjins · 02/11/2025 17:20

They're not alternative though - they're mainstream. You're more alternative if you don't have them at your age, esp if you're a metalhead. Tattoos are part of the uniform.

PotatoPrometheus · 02/11/2025 17:21

Humans have modified their bodies for millennia, for many different reasons. If anyone is getting a tattoo just because they think it’s ‘cool’ or ‘fashionable’ (or something equally as transient) then there’s a good chance they’ll regret it in time. People should get tattooed if they wish, but do it for yourself, not for anyone else.

Kuretake · 02/11/2025 16:48

When I was young - I'm 54!

sonjadog · 02/11/2025 17:33

When posters talk about "lovely clean skin" in these threads, it makes me think of Silence of the Lambs.

TatTalk · 02/11/2025 17:39

Maybe I just hit the right/wrong locations at the right/wrong time.

I caught older people forcibly tattooed in WW2.
The embarrassed blurry tattoos of the forces and my granddad's regretted woman's name (not his wife or mother).

A bit too cool when the townies had a holiday and came back with the NZ tribal souvenir.
A bit warned off by the aging punks clinging onto their youth.
Grunge and indie were pretty tattoo free.

I am slightly fascinated by a local woman who is stunning and creative and yet sports her tattoos like it's a major part of her personality. I get a full eyeful of the latest or the planned. I am genuinely intrigued but the edgy one from ten years ago now sadly looks like a nasty bruise. The rest of the world caught up for one major piece so what was unique is now also on several other local women. They don't really celebrate the past more date her.

Me, I've been through the boot cut, the skinny and now the barrel shapes and I will not be tethered to the past. My parents fashion photos from the 70s were warning enough.

I’m a heavily tattooed person.

Some of my earliest ones, yeah I absolutely regret. They are dated, not done particularly well so the lines aren’t as neat and crispy as they once were - but they are in places that are always covered now. So the only person who ever sees them is my DH. Even if I’m in a bikini, I can cover them if I want to with a pair of highwaisted bottoms. So I’m not going to go to the trouble of having them lasered.
The others, that are in very visible places? I still love them. I worked closely with my artist to come up with the designs, and she has a wonderful track record with previous clients giving her gleaming reviews, so I trusted her absolutely to do a good job.
Also important to remember that with tattoos, you get what you pay for 👀
”Got a new tattoo, it only cost me £80” 👀👀👀 I know it did mate…..I’m looking at it 🫠🫠😂😂😂

I think this is the problem now. You're view is right. You get what you pay for. And also you get them for their specific meaning to you. Nowadays people just get tattoos because they like the picture 🙄 I met a girl who had a rosary on her hand. Asked her if she was religious. No she said. She just liked the picture 🙄 some people are just too stupid to be getting something so permanent

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 02/11/2025 17:45

I doubt she really cares about your opinion.

Removal is expensive and incredibly painful. Much more painful than getting the tattoo in the first place.

As I said upthread, I had a tattoo removed. It took about 5 sessions. It really didn’t hurt a bit. They blast icy air on the area at the same time as the laser, and it’s only painful when you pay for it.
