Tattoos aren’t cool anymore …

I watched this video and found it really interesting. The first minute or two with the girl are a bit annoying, but once you get into it, there’s a lot being said.

Also, this video (which is a bit sadder), of people who definitely regret their tattoos

Personally, I am not anti-tattoo (though I used to be). Sometimes I think they can look good. However I think both videos really bring out the problems with them, particularly of course their permanence, as well as identifying fashions.

I just thought it would be interesting to share ….

Sometimes I see tattoos in my first language, and usually wrong... I always fight the temptation to tell the person...

My body, my choice. Live and let live ✌🏼

Notashamed13 · 02/11/2025 20:29

Not watched the videos, simply replying to the title, I didnt get my many tattoos to be cool. I got them for me.

Yeah, it would be really dull if we were all the same.

Superhansrantowindsor · 02/11/2025 20:31

Surely it doesn’t matter if they are cool or not. People are free to do what they want with their body. I don’t like the look of tattoos so I don’t have them. If other people want them that is up to them.

yousillygoose · 02/11/2025 20:35

I had my first tattoo at 40.
I have self harm scars all up my arm and wanted to fully close the door on that part of my life, so I had them covered.
It’s quite big, taking up most of my forearm, buts it’s a beautiful tattoo which has a great deal of meaning to me.
I probably won’t get another, but I have absolutely no regrets.

ThatRareLimeFinch · 02/11/2025 20:57

as someone with 19 tattoos, one more booked for next month and plans for more, i honestly couldnt care less if theyre 'cool' or not.

i got my first one at 15, and at 32 im still going. my mum got her first in her mid thirties, and still gets some now at 56 (we got matching ones 2 months ago)
my DP has none.

i get them purely for myself because i like pretty things, and want pretty things on my skin. lifes hard enough, i want stickers. you only get one life in this skin suit we all wear, personally i think why not decorate it?

i dont care whether people get them or not though, you do you. whatever makes people happy

Well, it depends whether you pick your tattoo because it’s in fashion and the “in” thing or it’s something that has meaning and it’s been done specifically for you. None of mine come from a book/portfolio. Only one could probably have been fashionable at some point, but again it’s not someone else’s design , it’s my own. Even if 416262728939392 million people have the same one though , and it dates to a specific year/decade , it’s still irrelevant though, as it has meaning to me. Fashions changing have 0 impact on my love (and I do love them ) for them.

I was talking about “fashion”, so yes I’m talking about tattoos that are “in fashion”. As per the first video content explanation. Not tattoos eg based on tribal or other criteria 🤷‍♀️

One issue that I see is that even if you like your tattoo at the time, fashions inevitably change.

I didn't get my tattoos to be "fashionable".

Not saying you did 🙄, people have tattoos for lots of different reasons, so no need to take it personally. However, if you actually watch the first video, you will see how fashion does influence tattoo choices, and many people are influenced that way 🤷‍♀️ that’s all. It’s not right or wrong, just an observation about fashion in relation to tattoos. Not saying either that because you have a tattoo that’s fashionable now, that you’ll dislike it later. However, if you do, unlike other changes in fashions eg. clothes, hair, home decor, you can’t change them because they’re physically permanent. Maybe watch the video - but if you’re not interested in this subject you probably won’t be wanting to consider this aspect anyway, no worries 😴

I’m a tattooist and there’s some truth in the “tattoos aren’t cool” anymore trope. After covid lots of young women were getting random smaller tattoos, to build up a patchwork of linework tattoos. This style isn’t fashionable anymore. These customers weren’t my regular clientele, who are mostly middle aged (like me) with well paid jobs, who like the art, or have a meaningful idea they’d like me to realise on their skin. Fwiw two of my absolute pet peeves in conversations on Mumsnet like this -

  1. People casually talking about laser being an option, when it’s actually a very painful (in most cases), expensive procedure, requiring multiple sessions, with variable results.
  2. the assumption that us tattooed folk want to be thought of as edgy and different, and will regret our tattoos now as they are more common place. Tattooing has a fascinating culture, and a proud history across the world, spanning the majority of human history, so apologies to those who’s delicate eyes it offends, but permanent body art isn’t going anywhere soon.
Strictlycomeparent · 02/11/2025 21:43

I think they are always a bit naff…even the better done ones…. But I would never tell anyone. I pretend to like them when people show me their tattoos.

JudgeBread · 02/11/2025 21:43

barleyblues · 02/11/2025 16:55

Yes, but we still have to look at other peoples'.

I can remember going to my gym where we had an open ladies changing room and I wondered why the girl changing next to me had a fanny that was "twinkling" at me.
It turned out she had a piercing down there.

Ouch 😮

Literally no one is making you look at other people's fannies oh my god, you must've been having a really good gawk to know it was a piercing.

Edited

You’re quite defensive aren’t you? 🙈

I definitely think there's 3 types of people.
Those that hate tattoos and piercing.

And the other 2 belong to the tattoo community.
1 likes tattoos for their meaning.
2.those who just like tattoos.
I'm in the 2nd group.
Each to their own.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 02/11/2025 22:19

I have one tattoo and extremely fond memories of everything about it. No regrets.

barleyblues · 02/11/2025 16:23

This 70 year old doesn't and neither do any of my peers.

My Mum's 74 and has one!

GoodVibesOnly21 · 02/11/2025 23:20

I’m early 40s and I’ve always wanted one, but never got one! I could never decide what design I wanted. I still want one but also can’t be bothered. As in can’t be bothered to properly decide on the design, also can’t be bothered to do the research on finding a good tattooist, or have found a good tattooist but the waiting list is long, it’s expensive (rightfully so as these tattoos are really good) and then I’d properly have to decide what tattoo I was going to get. Too much effort!! Oh and also I read you have to look after it and not get it wet. It always rains where I live and I sweat easily and do lots of exercise, so that guest really work for me. So I think I’m resigned to just thinking about getting a tattoo. 🤪

As for the trend thing.. isn’t everything a trend? As long as you’re happy who cares? Some people might regret their tattoos, some people might regret not getting a tattoo. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Excuse me, but I don't have a fanny-fetish.

I couldn't help but see it.

This gym member was a very tall girl who kept bending down in front of me with no pants on. I'll swear she was trying to show it off.

It was a little silver ring BTW

I’ve never looked at a tattoo and thought it makes someone cooler or more attractive.

You're not the target audience.

People have tattoos (in the most part) get them for themselves, not others.
I love all of mine

I've never liked them... they have been about for years but i think when they started getting popular people got them to look edgy or supercool but in reality was a bit of a cry for attention.

I think most people just look like they've been drawn on. its not cool, big or clever.

That's the most mumsnet quote ever🤣🤣🤣

Like a nursery teacher admonishing a toddler. Can imagine the head tilt and tinkly laugh which inevitably cane after it🙈

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 02/11/2025 17:47

People are so arrogant when it comes to tattoos and piercings - they seem to assume that their opinion actually matters and that those of us with them are suddenly going to go "oh, you're right, I look hideous!".

Baffling, really.

I don’t think they do. I think they’re just voicing their opinion, like you are. I’ve only ever seen about two tattoos that I’ve thought looked good, but I don’t care what you put on your body.

This thread is full of people with tattoos getting defensive and claiming others to be judgy.

Megifer · 03/11/2025 10:03

Stopped watching the first vid after 2 seconds 🤣

The intake of breath before sharing her Very Important Opinion and the video title was enough to tell me she has no idea what shes going on about.
