A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Slow cooker for one of the meats.

Sloe gin might be nice to glug in. I often do.

I make Delia's bread sauce

Edited

Do you know, I have a bottle of slow gin under the stairs. It's maturing nicely. I made it in September.

Yes we could. That's a good idea. Just trying to work out the logistics of cooking it all at once. Annoyingly, one of our ovens doesn't work. Hasn't for years. No idea why we never got it fixed. It's one of those double ovens, but only one works. There'll be 8 of us. Dh and I and our kids and dh's parents and his brother. The kids have insisted on double helpings of pigs in blankets as apparently there were not enough last time we hosted.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but I adore bread sauce!

When my dc were small, I used to cook the meat the day/night before. It saved me loads of time, and oven space for the big day.
I always do a ham in the slow cooker on Xmas eve.
Do you have an airfyer? Would be good for pigs in blankets if you're short on oven space.

Irish wheaten bread. Food of the gods. If I find Irish bread I buy in bulk and stuff into the chest freezer in the garage. I've a few sticks of white pudding in there now come to think of it

Do have a good recipe for Irish wheaten bread? I love it, but the only place I can find it is (occasionally) Tesco.

@RoyalImpatience
The wheaten bread is basically Irish soda bread but made with wholmeal flour. The courser the better.

@justasking111 White pudding is the one thing I have always yearned for in the years after becoming vegetarian.

Amazon sell a packet mix I think. M&S sell it. Tesco but as you say it is hit and miss.

No air fryer unfortunately. Never got round to it.
All this talk of food is making me hungry. I'm salivating at the thought of brandy snaps. A friend got me a small hamper from M&S last year. The brandy snaps were devine.

Or @Noodledog
Try
The Irish Mammy website

Ive found her recipes are definately more true to my Irish mammies and hers and hers etc etc etc

you'll not find all those Wierd added ingredients like eggs and butter that a lot of so called Irish recipes in books and online have

Ps
Its really cheap, dead simple and just like soda bread really but with 50/50 wholmeal and white flour instead of just white flour

To make your own buttermilk squeeze lemon juice into milk and let it curdle ( leave for 20mins )
If you like a really sour soda ( wheaten) bread use vinegar instead.

( I use a mix of the two )

Has a taste all it's own. I'm not vegetarian but accidentally bought one was baffled by the orange bits, carrots, but the herbs and spices were in there.

justasking111 · 04/11/2025 21:52

Was thinking that the grandchildren would love the Kimberley biscuits for Christmas.

A comment said put a bit of water in because it's dryer than the meat version. I microwave it

I've just bought a box of Kimberley biscuits for my Welshman. He loves ginger and has never had one. Jakers was expensive 😁

Just spotted Sainsburies and Morrisons.com have them @ £2:60 !

justasking111 · 04/11/2025 23:15

And I've just spotted the lemon puffs. I'm lost.

Rivalled · 05/11/2025 06:24

My goodness endless temptation! I need new Christmas lights….I've managed so far to resist f&m temptation - a few years back when much better paid and lower taxed, I did get a f&m hamper as it had been on my bucket list for some time…and I was on a particularly awful call when I ordered it with a mansplaining colleague being so boring i was considering faking illness to get away from him!

that was a good year!

I was just reading a thread on Phillipson and some discontent over a policy. I also recall the same groups being vicious and the usual over anyone not for Labour pre GE. And now they’re in power.

Yes, I saw that thread too. There's another about discontent RE paying more income tax. Interesting that more people are becoming Disenfranchised. The scales are falling.

LupaMoonhowl · 05/11/2025 07:21

I read that Phillipson was trying to get schools to stay open after 2.30 as many are finishing at that time giving the old lots than the required 32.5(?) hours of schooling a week. Needless to say the unions said that can only happen if the lunchbresk can be extended till then /no actual teaching so no, the kids can’t have the required amount. And they know a Labour ‘government’ will never take on a teaching union.
